Back to 1972, a home draw and some thugs at Maine Road for a youth cup tie.

One more remarkable thing about that promotion side is how relatively young most of the players were.

Here are their respective ages at the end of the 72/73 season: Dobson (25) Waldron & Nulty (24) Stevenson (23) Thomas Fletcher & Docherty (22) Ingham (21) & James (20)

Less than 13,000 on the Turf. I was always led to believe that the Saturday before Christmas was a bad time to have a home fixture. The suggestion was that ' Christmas shopping' had an effect on attendances generally and I've often wondered how much truth there was in that. Anyway, I was back home for a couple of weeks, we were top of the league and an intriguing fixture just ahead of us. Intriguing because of the opposition line up. :?:

Billy Ingham was only 20 I think, a year younger than me - makes me realise how long ago it was, I had my 21st birthday that season.

“You look a right pillock in that hat”, shouted one of the Burnley supporters. Under normal circumstances I might have chosen to protect the supporter’s name but I know that Mr Brian Lucas, who sadly passed away in September 2007, would not mind me naming him.

Pot and kettle spring to mind with that comment from Box Car

He got away with it though - they probably couldn't shift him.

I had my 21st in April of that season just two days after beating Sunderland at home and three days before the game at Preston. What a week!

That league table is interesting.

Look at Preston. Four points off a promotion place, and yet they needed a point against us in the last match of the season to stay up!

They'd been right up there, were third only recently, but then went on a shocking run.
