Re: Benson

Post by MrVmax » Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:29 pm

Benson is a young lad who to me is playing exactly like a young lad who gave away a penalty in his first 5 minutes. He looks a little nervous but I can definitely see quality. There was a moment with four minutes to go when he won an easy header on the edge of our box and chose to cushion it to a team mate rather than just punt it upfield ( like many of his senior colleagues). Some players aren’t naturally quite as loud or confident, it takes time. I don’t think his natural game , which appears to be possession is really our game but could it be that Sean sees a player that he thinks could be part of a future Burnley side based more upon more ball playing than chasing. Just to be clear , that’s not me having a dig at this current team, I bloody love them, but some of this criticism of a young lad who Dyche probably knows needs a bit longer seems very much knee jerk. All opinions anyway

Played off the park

As comfortable a 1-0 win as you’ll see. Pope had nothing to do. And their keeper saved the 2 best chances in the whole game. You should try facing your chair towards the TV, it’ll give you a better chance of analysing the game that way.

Spoke volumes that Dyche opted for Benson instead of Stephens. That alone will have given him a massive confidence boost.

Was solid enough tonight, he’s a young lad learning the game but seems to have a bit of confidence about him and hopefully that will come out more with minutes.

Important to remember that he was playing out of position tonight too. That said, what’s happened to Mace Goodridge? Seemed to be on the bench for a couple of games and not seen since. I’m assuming injury given we’ve been filling the bench with 2 keepers of late?

I normally ignore most of the things to you write on here, the 2nd and 3rd line of your post would be a great example of the type of rubbish I ignore.

However I wanted to commend you on the first line, you hit the nail on the head and a top observation. That’s exactly what SD wants from his wingers, everyone he has signed has had to prove they can defend first before they attack, it looks like Josh has a great future.

What are people expecting from him? We created next to nothing in the second half, that's not his fault, that's the way we played and he played his part. He defended how SD would expect him to in that position despite it not being his own.

Benson clearly has Sean Dyche's confidence. That's his 8th game of the season. He played more minutes in pre-season than any other u23 player. Impressive that Dyche put him on before Stephens. He's certainly getting some experience. I'm sure that he'll drop down the pecking order when Cork is back but SD sees him in training every day and he clearly thinks that he was the best option on our bench today.

Think he did well as can be expected - didn't really influence the game, but didn't look too out of place. Will judge him properly once he has played in his natural position.

It says more about recruitment that we are relying on him to play out wide. We look extremely thin on numbers again

Did his job well I thought tonight and out of position. He stuck to his task and I'm not sure what people were expecting of him. Of course he wouldn't be near the team if everyone was fit, all the central and wide midfielders, but this is a young kid making his way in the game.

Not so much recruitment when you look at the injury list. Yes, I believe we are one short in the wide positions but we've still got JBG, McNeil and Brady yet at Leeds not one of them was available. In the centre of midfield we've got Brownhill, Westwood, Stephens and Cork.

It's the injury situation as much as anything but the one benefit from this is that Benson will benefit every time he's out on that pitch with the senior players.

Playing out of position, pushed on early as a substitute as we reshuffled, out on the left, out on the right but what a good job he did for us tonight. He will have learned a hell of a lot from that.
Yes he ran around a lot chasing shadows had a wonderful game, says a lot about our management to throw on a lad on that is totally out of his depth and playing him in the wrong position being told constantly by the team where he should be , definitely one for the future

Wow! I try not to get drawn into silly exchanges. Who are you people, what do you expect. Does your own life experience suggest you or anyone could do better? This is a young man who has been thrust into a challenging position in the Premier League and not failed. Accentuate the positive or shut up.

Some genuine doom mongers in here, and it’s quite sad/baffling to see... Josh has just turned 21, and would have never been expecting to play regular Premier League football when he was slumming it out at Blundell Park last season in League Two.

Due to the ineptness of the board when it comes to transfers, Dyche has been forced to call upon him to fill in, in a position that isn’t even his natural position, and apart from the Wolves penalty (which was inconsequential in the end anyway) he’s done nothing wrong - we haven’t exactly played to his strengths in getting the best out of him, and we bypass the midfield a lot of the time, too - in his role in what is basically a second wingback, I’m sure Matt Lowton will thank him for helping out down that side and being a big reason for Matt’s upturn in form.

Yes, he might not be Premier League standard, but what the **** do you expect him to be? He’s mucked in against City, Everton, Leeds, Sheffield United having played dross like Morecambe, Macclesfield and the like last season and has put in a very good account of himself every single time.

FWIW, I’m just a few months younger than Josh and if I’d played as well as him to come onto this messageboard and see people slagging my performance off, I’d be disgusted. Let the kid play, he’s not only a talent but for now he’s all we’ve got :x

he would have learned more from tonight's game than coming on for the last 5 mins of a game when we are 3 up or 5 down. Lad has virtually no experience and is thrown in the deep end, out of position in a huge game in the toughest league in the world. Pretty sure that says a lot about the faith Dyche has in him - he'll be feeling 8ft tall tonight especially after the penalty incident.

Such a contrast in opinions. Those who think he did very well and those that the he was awful.

I thought he certainly had a poor game and was well below the standard but it's also to be expected given he was playing out of position and has so little experience at this level. There were also other players who played below average that wouldn't have helped him.

He worked hard and has good determination, if he's got the ability that will mean he's got every chance to become a great player. I think he needs to go on loan to a championship club in January if we can bring a winger in the transfer window.

I don't understand the need to defend his poor performance just because he's a young lad. The truth is we need players who are performing consistently well, doesn't matter if he's young or played out of position. If he was a bad game then he has a bad game. Doesn't mean that you don't support him or want him to do better.

If the same logic applied we'd be giving high ratings to players despite losing heavily to the likes of man city. There's no excuse. A bad game is a bad game. He'll know himself he wants to do better.

The best thing in his favour at the moment is fans aren’t allowed in, there are certainly some outing themselves as the ones who got on hewitts back after a misplaced pass.

Still we need a whipping boy or 2 and benson and wood are filling the role currently. It is almost like some are frustrated we didn’t lose and could have a real go.

Quote from Dyche after the game:
"Josh Benson comes on wide, he's not really a wide player you know, he's a central midfield player. Does a real shift for the team."

He's done what our manager asked him to do and he created the only real half chance of the second half with his cross that was deflected out for a corner. My intepretation of "Does a real shift for the team" is that Sean thinks he's done well and that's good enough for me.

I’ve just read one or two posts and the clique on this board is unbelievable. Modern day bullying actually .

We was played off the park. Shef united bossed us , just like we did to Leeds in the second half. Only when we did that to Leeds you were saying “ we were awesome against Leeds and deserved a point” you weren’t all saying “ we played into leeds’ plan Of soaking all the pressure and defending in shape against us”

That benson was actually wa*k .Really poor. I’m judging this game that’s all . Looked to have no pace, no confidence and just generally no ability ( at this level ) time will tell, I hope he does develop into a fantastic player as I don’t have any grudge against him at all. I want him to be good he’s just not at this moment in time

Had a poor game but to be expected I suppose. Lost the ball on numerous occasions, opted for the safe pass when he could have played Wood through (any CM would have) and generally chased shadows.

Some posters have been banging on about how they have been struggling with their mental health recently, and I really hope they have managed well over the festive period. But to see the same posters bullying others over the same time frame is incredibly disappointing.

I thought he did OK. He reminds me a bit of Richard Chaplow when he broke into the first team - he looked lightweight at the end of the season when he was introduced but came back for preseason with about an extra stone of muscle added. As others have said, Josh probably wasn't expecting to play as much as he has but he will at least know what's required physically. It's a hell of a jump from our U23's to the first team.

We all want to see lads come through the system so give him a break - he's doing a job for the manager and will be better for the experience.

Let's put things into perspective.
It was a 6 pointer of a game with a lot at stake for both teams.
It was a rugged contest with neither side taking any prisoners.
He was introduced early into the game and had a good 75-80 minutes on the park.
He was played out of position throughout.
He covered the right side of defence/midfield very well and gave Lowton a relatively comfortable evening. Sheff Utd are not a bad outfit and play some neat stuff, they just don't have a cutting edge at present.
From my perspective he did a job as instructed to do.

No problems from me.

I think he did ok again yesterday, didn’t pull up any trees but kept up with the pace of the game, won the ball distributed it well at times

He needs supporting though. Questioning his ability on forums like this isn’t helpful. Supporters bang on about taking advantage of the youth setup but criticise the young players when they play.

The positive is it has given him some experience but he shouldn’t be near the first team yet. Hopefully he will turnout to be a good player but at the moment there is something about his contribution that reminds me of Richard Eckerskey.

My problem with Benson's performance is why did Dyche even put a young in-experienced central midfielder out wide right in a game such as that ?

His performance wasn't good and was caught in no mans land between 3 players on numerous occasions, it was for quite a few moments in the game like sending a lamb to slaughter.

We had Bardsley on the bench. For me in a tight game it would have been more reliable to push Lowton up and let Bardsley play at right back. The result wouldn't have been any different but a game like that for Benson can sometimes kill the players confidence.

Sensible post. Unfortunately, though, "perspective" is sometimes in short supply amongst football fans.
I'm sure SD and his team will let Benson know what he did well and what he needs to improve on.

You have to play players to give them experience. I’m sure Dyche and his team have seen enough of him on a daily basis to know he can make the step up.

Playing him out of position could be a confidence boost - it shows that the management have trust in him. For a young player, being in the starting XI means more than coming on from the bench also a bit of bonus cash with his appearance fee won’t go unnoticed either.

I've seen Benson many times for the u23's and he's a very talented central midfielder. I would agree that he got caught out a few times last night and didn't look too comfortable out wide but we literally had no other options. Having a pop at a 21 year old kid giving his all is a little bit low....but expected from the usual suspects. Like some others have said, it was a very tight game we couldn't afford to lose and he played his part in a bit of a scratch team getting 3 vital points.

The issue this highlights for me is once again recruitment (or lack of it). We are way short of options in wide areas and whilst 2 of our 3 options are Brady and JBG we need MORE than just one more option. Brady has done ok recently but let's not have short memories of his injury record and how reliable he and JBG are. SD always says he likes to carry a small squad (not sure if that's actually his preference or if he was putting a positive spin on not being able to afford a big squad) and you just can't do that with players like this who are unavailable far more often than not.

No high horse sorry, just find your comments about a young player who has hardly played first team football for us unacceptable.

Anyone who thinks he had a bad game obviously didn’t watch him without the ball last night because he was very disciplined and so contributed to a very important win. Wasn’t up to Hendrick’s standards at playing that role, but very promising for a young lad to show that maturity.

Think I’ll listen to Sean’s appraisal of his performance and hopefully so will he.

Not just me Tony look at the ratings thread, feel for the lad he’s not ready, don’t think blowing smoke up his arse is going to help him in the future. Shocking we are relying on someone who’s not ready irrespective of age.

Dale Stephens 100 apps at this level on bench, move Brownhill out to right , seemed pretty obvious to me.

The football we are playing is awful, I guess Dyche just wanted someone who can run around on the right, certainly filled that brief.

If you like watching us at moment all power to you.

I’m hoping Pace knows some players that can play on the right as the club obviously don’t at this juncture.

He’s injured
I know has Vydra ever come on after ten minutes?

He usually gets 10 mins at the end of a game

He is filling in whilst players are injured in a position he hasn’t played. What are you expecting? Did you think he was gonna turn into Ronaldinho and skin players.

Honestly posters like this just show that most fans no literally nothing about football.

Tony is spot on with his assessment of Benson as was Dyche in his post match press conference.

Benson is a bright talent and will feature more the clarets in future.
