Positives from yesterday...

Post by NewClaret » Mon Dec 28, 2020 1:19 pm

There were quite a few, I thought. Worth discussing amongst all the Jones/Oliver anger:

- still haven’t conceded a goal in open play for an age. Defence must take confidence in that.

- Pope with 3 excellent saves.

- I’m loving Lowton at the minute. Another solid performance and enjoyed his run & shot. Hoping this form continues.

- Barnes had 3 shots, scored one, two very well saved. On another day, might’ve had a hattrick.

- Brownhill was immense. Like that he took charge second half, had the confidence to shoot & mix things up a bit. Charged in to the box once or twice, which I’d like to see more of.

- We completed without any natural wingers or ever-present Dwight. On another day they might’ve made the difference.

- Dominant second half performance.

Showed that if we need to, we can go 4-3-3 and something for Dyche to switch to in future games.

Benson got another 70+ PL minutes under his belt.

Barnes looked lively throughout, and hopefully he's getting his match sharpness back.

Brownhill is growing game by game.

Stephens did ok when he came on.

Leeds had to adapt their style to accommodate us, that's a compliment in itself.

We're creating chances, if we keep doing that then the goals will come.

The change in shape when Jay came on to 4-3-3 was very positive and we deserved all 3 points from yesterday.

Yep, as I say, be good if this now gives SD confidence to have a Plan B if the need arises again. Maybe even tomorrow.

Win the next 2 and we should be 8 pts clear of the bottom 3

One big negative which was the result but a lot of positives to take from it.

Best football we’ve played in second half since Palace away last season

They did all the above without any recognised wide players.

We will play lots of better teams than Leeds, considering the pre match hype I don't think they looked that good.
If Ben hadn't been wearing ice skates first half it could have been a different story.

The way we responded second half.
Dale Stephens cameo was a lot better than in his previous minutes.
Taking the game and creating chances without McNeil or Brady
It was a good performance clouded by the result

Agree with all of the above but one negative for me was that the starting 11 and the bench did demonstrate again just what limitations/lack of quality options the manager has when we get a few injuries.

I also thought we looked good with 4-3-3. Maybe an option tomorrow if McNeil and Brady don’t make it.

I'd be a lot happier with our overall performance than the Leeds fans should be with theirs. A better team would have beaten them 15-0

Stephens looked better because he's more familiar at sitting back with 2 other CMs in front of him. Plays a bit like an anchor man/defensive midfielder with limited movement. He also made one forward pass between the lines which was excellent, and exactly what we lack usually.

It outlined yet again our desperate need for some serious attacking threat and pace from the wings.

Let's just put the points on the board and see where it takes us. But yes this is a great opportunity to finally put some daylight between ourselves and the dreaded drop zone.

Good performance from Stephens, and nice to see so many posters recognise this rather than write him off. I think there is a role for him to sit in front of Mee/Tarkowski. We have been used to seeing Jack do this, but he has some way to go to get match fit . I think when Stephens has had a few games you will see also he is a bit more physical than Jack

Our midfielders yesterday lacked shape in the first half-every loose ball seemed to go to a Leeds player, but Brownhill had his best half yet in the second half

Having a fit Weswood/Brownhill/Cork/ Stephens, and Benson on the fringe will be a great insurance for injuries and suspensions, and hopefully SD can rotate a little

We also learned yesterday that if we have no wingers for a game that SD is more comfy with 433, than having three at the back. It seemed to suit us

Agree with all the positive points made and it would be VG if we could now stuff SU tomorrow night.

I like this, but Pope's 3 excellent saves?

I'm not saying they didn't happen, I just can't remember them. I remember the routine ones for a good goalie like him though. Were there others?

I was referring to:

- the reaction save after Mee slipped, a Leeds player shot and it took a deflection off Bamford (I think).

- Hernandez save low to his left.

- Raphina (I think) save low again.

Subjective, I suppose. None of them work dies, I agree, but very good saves nevertheless. I was just really saying his good form continues.
