Today’s football 28/12

Some things don’t change. Leicester get a pen but it’s been saved.

Iheanacho didn't look confident, it was a poor penalty and good height for the keeper.

Beat me to it CT  I can see changes from Leicester at HT if this stalemate continues, Vardy will surely come on.

Why do players persist with the stuttering run up, just whack the blooming ball, that's much more effective, and will more often than not result in the pen being scored.

Hmm! maybe he would but his record from the spot isn't that great, however yes you'd rather have Vardy stepping up then Iheanacho.

that's pretty big considering the levels they go to in the PL to protect the players.

Only the 2nd PL match to fall foul of covid, Villa-Newcastle being the other.

Can’t help but think this will become more common throughout Jan with staff mixing over Christmas.

I think Man City should be able to cope with a couple of players out though.

Could've done better at his near post for sure but perhaps too much pace on the ball and a very good finish.

Rumours that City’s next two could also be off.

They play United in the League Cup semi next Wednesday.
Leyton Orient will be keeping more then an eye on that one.

They should be in bother but with the final being pushed back to April and it being City they’ll probably get away with it.

I think City should be punished, this is at least the second time it's happened with them. Orient should be given their place in the league cup and we should be given all their league points, seems perfectly fair to me

It wouldn't matter if the final was the same weekend. Being Man City they would get away with it.

If I were Leyton Orient I'd certainly consider legal action if Man City are allowed to postpone the game rather than being kicked out.

Tbf, different competition so less time to reschedule can be the only excuse. I’d be a bit miffed if we had to start forfeiting games due to Covid results, but a few players being out doesn’t seem enough for a cancellation to me!

Neither Chelsea or West Ham will be impressed with this situation, Chelsea are due to play City on the 3rd Jan, and West Ham are scheduled to visit Goodison on NYD, meanwhile City got virtually a full week's rest before heading to the Bridge, well other teams have to cram fixtures into the space of 2 days in many cases, this has to be an advantage for them.

Chelsea play tonight and on the 3rd, well West Ham play tomorrow, and then again on the 1st Jan, I know Christmas is a busy time for all the clubs, but it's usually the same for everyone, clearly that won't now be the case, and as I see it City will likely benefit due to an error of their own making, how can that be right.

I think it depends on many factors, including the opposition, as well as the obvious fitness to the player in question and whether he'd be better off towards the end as the opposition tire. The thinking can also be that if they win without him, they can leave him out.

Remember palace had conceded 10 in the last 2 previous games, they thought it’d be a stroll in the park which can & did backfire for them.

yeah so by that and by how the game panned out Rodgers could have gone full strength and taken Vardy off at half time with the game won, he played 30 + minutes trying to rescue the game. Backwards thinking

If, as stated higher up, it is two players and two coaches that isn’t the problem. Once it is in the group it soon spreads, as Newcastle found. The match has to be postponed to protect Everton.

they had already reported a fresh outbreak on Christmas day, this is new cases at City - it's also the second time this has happened with them (and Kyle Walker).........

The Times, about an hour ago:

Everton match postponed after three more Covid-19 positives at Manchester City
Sunday’s clash with Chelsea also in doubt

Paul Joyce, Pol Ballus, Paul Hirst
Monday December 28 2020, 4.45pm, The Times

Manchester City’s match against Everton tonight has been postponed after three more members of Pep Guardiola’s squad tested positive for Covid-19.

City were due to take on Everton at Goodison Park at 8pm, but four hours before kick-off the Premier League announced that the fixture had been postponed. City have now had seven new positive tests over the past five days.

The club announced on Christmas Day that Gabriel Jesus, Kyle Walker and two staff members had contracted the virus. The squad were tested again yesterday and there were three more positive tests.

City have not confirmed the identity of the trio, but it is understood that they are all players. They will all have to self-isolate for at least ten days.

The club’s training ground has been closed for an indefinite period and is undergoing a deep clean. City fear the outbreak has been caused by the new extremely contagious variant that has become particularly prominent in London and the South East over the past couple of weeks.

City suspect that they contracted the virus during a trip to London to play Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on November 22.

The players will be tested again tomorrow to see if the virus has spread further, but Sunday’s Premier League match between City and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is now in doubt. Three days after that match, Guardiola’s team are due to play Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

City’s last match came on Saturday night when they beat Newcastle United 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Because the latest round of test results were not due until today, Guardiola did not know which players he would have available for the trip to Everton when he woke this morning.

“Manchester City FC can confirm that this evening’s Premier League fixture at Everton has been postponed,” City said in a statement. “After the latest round of Covid-19 testing, the club returned a number of positive cases, in addition to the four already reported on Christmas Day.

“With the security of the bubble compromised, there posed a risk that the virus could spread further amongst the squad, the staff and potentially beyond. Based on strong medical advice the Premier League, in consultation with both clubs, have decided to postpone the fixture.

“All positive cases involving players and staff will observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. The first-team training ground at City Football Academy will close for an indeterminate period, with the squad and associated bubble undergoing testing before any decision is made for training to resume.

“Everyone at the club wishes all of our colleagues a speedy recovery ahead of their return to work, training and competition.”

Ilkay Gündogan, Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte tested positive for Covid earlier in the season and had to miss a number of games.

The Premier League said: “Manchester City’s fixture at Everton, due to be played at 8pm this evening, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting.

“Manchester City lodged a request with the Premier League today to rearrange the match following an increase in positive Covid-19 test results received by the club this morning, on top of the cases reported on Christmas Day.

“This rise has created uncertainty and the Premier League Board received medical advice that the match should be postponed. The Board agreed to rearrange the game as a precaution, and further testing will now take place tomorrow.

“The decision has been taken with the health of players and staff the priority. The Premier League continues to have full confidence in its protocols and rules, and the way in which all clubs are implementing them.

“The League wishes those with Covid-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will rearrange the postponed fixture against Everton in due course.”

One rule for the elite, one rule for everybody else, if Orient were thrown out for being unable to fulfil their fixture then so should City be, obviously league games are a different kettle of fish, as the outcome of those can ultimately affect the final standings, so they will have to be rearranged when appropriate, but now the precedent has been set following Orient's expulsion, then it should be applied to anyone else in the same situation, of course it won't be as the authorities won't want to upset one of the big boys.

The rules are different at the latter stages of the competition.

Suppose it's logical that it's less likely a semi final will be cancelled than an early round fixture.

It's not the same situation though. There is plenty of time for the semi-final to be rearranged before the next round (the final) is due to be played. When Orient couldn't fulfil their fixture there wasn't enough time before the next round.

It's not just Orient.
Lots of sides have found themselves out of the fa cup in the earlier stages as they had covid cases, so yes., the same ought to apply to all.

If Orient board have any Cojones they will sue
Regardless of the Cojones, I doubt Leyton Orient have the finances to take action.

They certainly couldn't afford to lose and pay expenses.
