Rebranding Burnley

Post by kritichris » Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:38 am

It's been touched on before but as the takeover is looking more like a fait accompli are there any worries about the Club being rebranded?
Rename: The Burnley Bruins; The Burnley Bears; Burnley Buffaloes etc.
Team Colours: Ditch the Claret and Blue? red, white and blue; all brown? (re bears etc)
Cheerleaders. Nothing new there.
Food franchise Big Mac v Hollands Pies
More music being used for effect, ta-ra!

I just hope not.

Assuming Sean stays, then 'Little old Burnley' might be appropriate?

Mind you, I've suggested that before the takeover was muted and it didn't seem to get much support.

Always thought we missed a trick with the Bulls nickname, given that was the name of the pub the club was founded in.

I’ve said in the past that I wouldn’t mind a new badge. Even a change back to the previous badge would be an improvement.

You would hope any owners of a football club would choose to work with the fans and not dictate to them. At Hull the all out war with their owners started when they tried to drop the word City and change the name to Hull Tigers.

At Cardiff, Vincent Tan changed the club colours from blue to red, if you go there the newer part of the stadium has red seats (top tier, see below). In the end he had to back down.

We've already been American run when Lee Hoos was CEO. Bad tempered sod at times but I found him OK and got on well with him. He did bring us all Krispy Kreme doughnuts at our last meeting with him too. Dave Baldwin once asked me if I was so easily bought, a couple of Krispy Kremes. Of course I am I told him. :D

I like the current badge which has become very prominent with football fans around the country, particularly with the light blue background.

No matter what they changed our name to, the media would still get us mixed up with Barnsley

I think the one thing which might get done is a stadium sponsorship. It seems the easiest thing to boost commercials.

I know this won't be liked by traditional fans and most would still call it by its current name but given what levers the new owners have to increase the commercials and possibly pay for things like more corporate seating and updating of the stadium, this may be a way around it without having to go to stupid things like messing with badges/names of the clube - which I seriously don't think this group of investors would want given they seem to understand the fabric of the club and its place in the community.

Why do people think that rebranding involves a name change or even a badge change?

It can be done in more effective and subtle ways than that

Or they may just up sticks and move us to somewhere nearer Manchester (Bury or Stockport) and change the name to Manchester North or South.

I agree, rebranding could simple me getting our name to places it isn't well known. It could actual be giving us a brand, ala Citieh have now in the middle east or Leicester in the far east.

On the "brand" colours etc, I like the branding Dave Baldwin was going with throughout the club, the claret & blue with grey. Apart from very dated stands, every angle of the ground now ties together with the same colour theme throughout

I personally wouldn’t care if they changed the name of Turf Moor.

Other than the media no one will refer to its commercial name. I can’t even remember what St James’s Park is called these days

Wouldn't necessarily bother me either in the grand scheme of things - I will always be off t' turf when going to watch us play. The happy place thing would have been an interesting situation if we had 'The Dell Stadium' (linking to suggestions Michael Dell could be someone who invests into ALK). Also the confusion with Southampton in that case with traditionalists.. ha ha.. maybe a better example should have been used.

The sports direct arena or whatever it is called, is a good example - as it just reminds me how little I use ground names in my discussions when talking about football.

He will be a big miss but to be fair to the new guy (sorry his name's escaped me at the moment) he's not really had the best time at the moment to exert his ideas. Hopefully, working underneath Dave for a short time, he'll carry on some of Dave's good ideas and take some of his own forward as well. You also never know what will happen when the new owners rock up either. They may not operate with a CEO or with a CEO that has a completely different remit...ala Man Utd and Woodwood

I can’t ever imagine anyone referring to turf moor any other way than that.

Give it a lick of paint, put some new seats in, stick some new signage up with some soul-less and face-less betting company’s name splattered all over the place and it won’t matter one iota in my opinion. Only the utter tools in the sky studio will refer to it as the shitbet dogsbowl. Everyone else will call it what it is... turf moor. Now and forever.

Like burnden park, boothferry & roker I could go on, the older generation will always fondly remember turf moor if it was to change as the older generation fondly remembered the other 3 examples which changed from a complete transfer nevermind the ground actually changing as sports direct arena (st James park) did, eventually if it was to change it would be recognised for what it was current, lots of us would be dead & buried by then so it wouldn’t matter & the younger generation would know no different, when they’ve got the keys they can do what there like within reason.

This reminds me of the Pro Evo games for the playstation where we're called Lancashire Clarets. I hate that can it's why i've never been able to get onboard with these games. Although I suppose we have more identity than Blackburn who are simply called Lancashire :)

Good point but a lot has to do with the age of some fans i would say .

Now for myself In Galway they changed the name from Terryland Park EDP ( Eamon Deacy Park ) and in Dublin from Lansdowne to Aviva , now i am very much old style and still call them by the former names where as the young on the whole go with the newer names .

You could, but you are naming grounds that no longer exist and have been replaced by new stadiums, so all is well in calling them by their known name because they have never been anything else. At least two of them have already had more than one name since being built.... that doesnt help a club in trying to create an identity. In all three cases you could argue that chasing the sponsorship cash hasn’t helped what’s happening on the pitch or elsewhere.
We aren’t talking about replacing turf moor with another new ground... merely about rebranding what currently exists. Turf moor is just that, and in my opinion, that’s how it should remain.
Can you really see it being referred to as “the farmhouse biscuits turf moor stadium”?

The James Hargreaves Stadium. How a tiny business has its name on the Main Stand for all these years baffles me tbh.

Bloody hell this moved on quick. !

At the moment, there is no talk of moving. In fact, from what little (very little) knowledge I have of this, moving isn’t on the cards. My understanding is they are happy with the location, and the proximity to the town centre. Nowt to say that won’t change of course but I’m basing my thoughts on us staying put based on the limited information I have.

Maybe if and when the bob lord gets developed, there’s an opportunity to rename and generate some cash. The Jimmy McIlroy stand can remain that for me, despite not making owt in sponsorship money.

I suppose I’m just old school. Out of the two “new” stands, only the JM stand has kept it’s given name, and that’s out of respect for the player it is named after. The longside, the bob lord and the cricket field stands remain as they are in my world.

It doesn’t matter what me or you think or anybody else if they want to change the name, colours, club emblems etc they can they can do what they like or what they see fit, they’d be no logical reason to apart from marketing purposes & to broaden the fanbase appeal, I personally wouldn’t be ideologically opposed to any changes if it improved the club as a whole, you can easily familiarise yourself with a new name as you could with a old name the same applies to any changes.

Would love him back at the club when he leaves the EFL in a few months time
Dave leaves in two days time - Trevor Birch takes over on 1st January.

From a personal point of view I'd love him back at the club too. Doubt that will happen though unfortunately.

I personally wouldn’t care if they changed the name of Turf Moor.

I can’t even remember what St James’s Park is called these days
St James' Park - no sponsor on it now

Bloody hell this moved on quick. !

At the moment, there is no talk of moving. In fact, from what little (very little) knowledge I have of this, moving isn’t on the cards. My understanding is they are happy with the location, and the proximity to the town centre. Nowt to say that won’t change of course but I’m basing my thoughts on us staying put based on the limited information I have.
I admit, I know absolutely zero about the takeover.
I hope it goes well for the club.

I have a slight fear it might not.

The James Hargreaves Stadium. How a tiny business has its name on the Main Stand for all these years baffles me tbh.
Into our fifth successive Premier League season with all the global attention and the Bob Lord has just been sponsored by a property development company in Padiham.

I'm surprised it is only a slight fear to be honest. You are not the most positive.
