No don't think so. I think that was much later with John Gayle shouldering the ball into the net.
This was ITV (Granada), with Leighton James, Collins, Fletcher and Uwe etc.
Think I spotted myself behind the goals!

Regarding the John Gayle one, as the great man said when being interviewed about his hat trick. They all count man !

That was the season before, 73-74 when the 3 day week was happening.

As Silkyskills has said, it was 1973/74 during the three day week. Saturday was a working day in Burnley. Just short of 19,000 there and Bob Lord hit out at the fans for not supporting Saturday evening football. We had 15,000 at the next home game on a Saturday afternoon.

Yes, I remembered Lord having plenty to say about it and it's so weird to think how much consternation a 7.30 kick off on a Saturday evening caused back then. Football NEVER kicked off at any other time than 3.00 (unless mid week) and there was nothing (and I mean NOTHING, except Church) on Sundays. How times have changed!!! And yes, I know there's a brilliant pun in there!! :D

The "John Gayle" match I was thinking of turns out to have been in 1994 and is reported to have been our first "live" TV game in colour. It was played at 5pm on the Sunday Nov 20th.
Just checked on the Jan 1974 fixture which we lost 2-1, but I'm trying to work out why it would be moved to the evening, which would require lighting, whereas others were moved to the afternoon in order not to use floodlights?
(I remember the majority of us taking the afternoon off to watch us play Norwich midweek around that time).

The John Gayle shoulder was a friday night game. Elton in the chair, Tyldsley commentating with Lou Macari as co commentator. Football for Free on ITV!! Steve Davies scored a cracker.

My recollection was of a Friday or Saturday evening, but it's listed as being Sunday Nov 20th at 17.00.

Am I right in thinking we had the two Saturday night matches? I remember losing to an Ipswich side with Mick Mills and Kevin Beattie playing. I thought I saw us lose another but didn’t think it was Sheff U.

Ipswich was the next home game but I’m sure we didn’t experiment with the Sat evening kick off again.

My memory re why the Sheff Utd evening match was played on the Saturday evening was that Lord felt maybe we'd pull a bigger crowd as people could go to football and then go out nightclubbing etc. I was sure he touted it as an "experiment" because he was always bemoaning our lack of numbers turning up, but as mentioned above, it was very much a one off as he still moaned about the size of the crowd and we lost!! I can't remember clearly, but the kick off time must have impacted negatively on the usually large away following and was always going to.

More memories. That was the first time I took a “young lady” to a match. We stopped on the way back at the Herders over the tops back to Keighley for a couple of shandy’s. Nothing else transpired as I’d left my lights on my Wolsely Hornet and she had to push it to help me jump start it 😩.

I also remember that as I was 5 and remember him doing this huge spit when the camera zoomed in on a corner and thought it was disgusting

Those were the days id wake up at 5 every day and watch Burnley videos until my parents woke up to make me breakfast

During the miners strike of the mid 1970's the whole country was put on a 3 day working week, different areas worked different days. East Lancashire's working days were Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the rest of the week there was no power either in homes or workplaces.

Therefore if Burnley had played on a Saturday afternoon the crowd would have been incredibly low because everyone was working.

The club/Bob Lord decided to buy, or maybe even rent, their own generator to power the floodlights for an evening kick off. Hence thats why we played Sheffield United on a Saturday night. If my memory serves me correctly we lost the game, seemingly Bob Lord had expected a larger crowd and made his views known in the local media.

Again if I remember correctly, I seem to recall we played Norwich at home on a Tuesday afternoon?

That was before the 3 day week was introduced. While the Sheff U game was in Jan, the Norwich game was in November. As posted, was in the Texaco Cup. The home league game against Norwich was 11 days later

You may well be right Targetman re why we played Sheff U at home on the Saturday evening and you are definitely correct about the Norwich game being on the Tuesday afternoon because of a ban on unnecessary power usage. I was at high school and although I gave it large beforehand saying I was going to the game, in the end I didn't bunk off school to attend as my mum said she'd be checking ( ), but quite a lot did.

A friend of mine played against Brian O'Neil in non-league football in the southwest. He said he was the best player and the hardest player he ever played against. My friend is an ex-pro who was injured early in his career and slipped into the Southern Premier League with Poole Town. By the time he faced O'Neil, he was playing at a lower level.

The 1994 Sheff Utd game was on a Sunday afternoon and my son was mascot. John Gayle hit the highest shot I've ever seen when he struck the front of the roof of the Cricket Field stand from about 25 yards out.
