When we were crap - players you feared.

Post by Guller Bull » Tue Jan 05, 2021 1:30 pm

As per title. I am sure we must have had a few players that other clubs feared when we were in the lower echelons - Payton, Francis etc but who were the players that always seemed to have absolute worldies against us?

Jack Lester was always one for me that as soon as you heard his name you thought "Oh crap!"

Shaun Goater (or any of that City team)
Carl Asaba
Bob Taylor
Alan Lee

Many others, I'm sure.

Andy Hesenthaler at Gillingham looked like he used to enjoy playing against us. A class player I thought at the level.

It was about 15 years ago that Nicklaus Bendtner played for Birmingham out wide on the Turf and had a great game...not sure if that’s who were you were thinking ?
They also had the likes of Damien Johnson, Stern John, Clinton Morrison all playing up front around the same era.

Are you thinking of Noel Luke? Player called Blake equalised for Cardiff City when we beat them 3-1 at home at the end of the promotion season, 91-92.

Some players in this thread by the way, some of them I think were probably playing below their actual ability - David Lee for example, and Jamie Cureton

Ronnie Jepson had a good record against us before he signed. Carlo Corrazin had a good reputation at that level, as did Paul Peschisolido as they were both capped at international level for Canada

I can't recall the player's name but Jakubs Tash is definitely right about Peterborough being a bogey team. We beat them 4-1 in April 1991 and it was the first time we'd ever beaten them. We lost in the League Cup in 1966 but then went 11 league games without a win against them from 1985 up to that game in 1991.

That's him!! Noel Luke.

Yes, Blake was a decent player - played for Cardiff, Bolton and Rovers amongst others.

Remember when ‘moneybags’ Fulham spent £2m on Louis Saha... Fulham had some decent players around that time - Geoff Horsefield being one of them too.

I can’t remember the name of the other striker who played with Saha up front - a black guy who’s name escapes me right now - I think he played in the Premier League too for a short while

Edit - it’s come to me Barry Hales

Brian Mooney for Preston always worried me. Looked stylish on the ball, especially on that pitch. Needn't have worried on that great night in 88 though!
