Xmas lights
I think I'm the last one on my street with them up. I like the festive air and colour they bring on these long dark days. There's not a lot, just a few strands around the door and to the side where there are some bushes.
Anyone else got theirs still up?

Re: Xmas lights
I've noticed over the last few years more and more people that have put white and daylight bulbs on small bushes/ trees etc seem to have them on most of the year.

Re: Xmas lights
English tradition is you take them down on the Feast of the Epiphany which is tomorrow - of course there are other traditions which see them up until February (including the Queen who keeps them up until the anniversary of her fathers death)ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 2:20 pm12th night tonight isn't it - no lights outside but cards etc. will be coming down here first thing tomorrow morning.
the cause of people taking them down early is people putting then up too early

Re: Xmas lights
On outside lights will be on for the last time this evening. Everything else tidied away today.
We looked at what the rest of the street had done. Only one other house with lights outside today - there were maybe 15 a couple of days ago.
R4 this morning discussed. It seems we can leave up until Candlemas eve, so lights down on 1st Feb.
I've been tempted this year to leave the lights on all the time - chase away the winter darkness and those little covid-fellas!

Day after boxing day
Re: Xmas lights
The cause of people taking them down too early is usually doing it before returning to work after Xmas/New Year.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 3:03 pmEnglish tradition is you take them down on the Feast of the Epiphany which is tomorrow - of course there are other traditions which see them up until February (including the Queen who keeps them up until the anniversary of her fathers death)

Re: Xmas lights
This.
We put them up earlier than normal (end Nov)
Although we are both working from home, they were packed away over the weekend as we wouldn’t have had time to do them this week
Re: Xmas lights
Depends how you count. If Christmas Day is "1st night" then 5th January is 12th night; but if you count from Boxing Day then 12th Night coincides with Epiphany on 6th January.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 2:20 pm12th night tonight isn't it - no lights outside but cards etc. will be coming down here first thing tomorrow morning.

Re: Xmas lights
people may have noticed by now that I am a bit if a Stickler on most things and this is one of them - never brought them down early and never will I believe, even when commuting and spending 10 hours plus in the office - sometimes it was a staged effort over a couple of days but so be it

Re: Xmas lights
Usually with my fingers to start with but always take things down on the morning of the 6th. I believe Christmas Day to be the first day of Christmas.
Re: Xmas lights
Didn't we have this "12th night" as the 5th or 6th of January last year and the year before....
We think 5th, my Sister says 6th ... who cares ... take your stuff down when you want .

Re: Xmas lights
Any time for us up to twelfth night. Came down today as work dictates I need to be in peace and quiet for a couple of weeks from today. However, I relented and let she-who-must-be-obeyed keep her outside white tree lights, on the proviso they are made a feature rather than over hedge as Christmas decoration from tomorrow.

We always start Christmas Eve, maybe because we lived in Germany when our Kids were growing up and it's how they do things.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 4:37 pmUsually with my fingers to start with but always take things down on the morning of the 6th. Re: Xmas lights
Everything down apart from the white lights on the tree. They're now regarded as "winter lights" and will stay on to dispel the gloom.
