Will the United Game go ahead?

Post by PremierLeagueClass » Fri Jan 08, 2021 2:59 pm

There’s talk of Spurs calling their game off on Wednesday due to an outbreak in the first team. Potential for our game to go the same way?

I think we need to wait to see if tomorrow's game definitely goes ahead first. Then see what the latest is on Monday.

Any news now could be outdated by after the weekend.

All sport will pause very shortly. Mark my words. Only a matter of time before it stops.

Happen folk are going to work like. Can’t really be any other explanation unless they are driving about for leisure.

Done a lot of walking again lately and there are a lot of 'newish' housing developments around. Most have 2/3 cars. No wonder the town gets jammed. I just don't know how people can afford 2 AUDIS and a BMW and a new house.

Staying up. Been saying the same myself for a few years now where we live. New houses, couples in say early 30's, brand new 4 bed house, kids, dog, 2 fancy cars on drive. Where they get the money from is beyond me. I'm in my mid 50's and a decent well paid job but can't afford those sort of properties and all the trappings. Unreal!

I am torn. I see the positives in having the games played. It is a distraction for the population but, why risk the spread? Torn !

Alternatively, they could simply have played us on the original date instead of a daft friendly against Villa

If we only have 5 first team players available it’ll go ahead.......if Utd only have 15 first team players it’ll be postponed....

I’ve asked this a few times on here, what would anybody gain by stopping Premier League football now?

It’s a genuine question, I just don’t see why it would stop.

I think when you look at the rates of infection in the PL testing, they’re really low. In that sense, football isn’t mirroring wider society and it of course has the benefit of entertaining the population when they can’t do much else.

I think a break should only come when cases start to peak in the testing, but really, for the PL, the clubs should be sensible in cup weeks etc, play the younger/reserve players and give their first team squads a break. We could have easily had two weeks off were it not for the United rearrangement.

Actually if you look at the last weeks test results, the positive results in the Premier League almost exactly mirrored the current rates in the general population. I think it was about 1.8%

Didn’t know that. Last time I heard it seemed very low.

Ah, was 18 last time I heard, which on a numerical basis seemed very low (<1 person per club).

For me, I’d like to carry on and see a very clear system for cancellations on a game by game basis, based on % infections of top 15 first team players based on last 30 games or something.

Those 40 might be at 3-4 clubs in which case the other clubs should continue.

Wouldn’t object to the United game being postponed given our injury list at the moment though :D

The rates of infection in the Premier League are in ‘real terms’ much lower than in the general population because everybody in the league is being tested.

If you tested the entire population the numbers of infections would increase dramatically.

I believe the 2% figure is actually an estimate provided by the ONS rather than based on the amount of folk tested. If we base it on positive test cases then the actual percentage works out considerably less than 2%. As an example, if we assume 60,000 people per day were tested positive in the UK last week, that works out at about 420000 from a population of circa 70 million.....or 0.06% of the population
