A joke is always more amusing when the butt of it is completely humourless :D Historical accuracy isn't really the point JC.

With your price range you can get excellent boots at the top end. Go below a hundred quid and you get what you pay for.
Some of the suggestions are really good, but cheap 3 season boots that aren't Goretex or that makers equivalent aren't worth buying if you want to really get out there in the autumn and winter, but they are fine for spring or summer outings.
If you are walking in the hills or mountains I would look at Berghaus, Saloman or Meindl.
There are some good offers around at the moment, so shop around, online of course.

Not hiking, per se, but i got some Quechua ones from Decathlon for around the £50 mark, and they've been great for walking the hills and valleys of South Yorkshire! :-)

Another shout hear for Brasher Boots. My wife also as a pair (of Brasher’s) as well. We’ve walked hundreds of miles in then and never had a blister between us.

I have no urge to annex Poland so think these will be my next purchase for winter hiking. Upgrading from some 7 year old Karrimors

I got some Merrell Zions. About £140. They are robust but lightweight. I'd trashed two pairs of boots in two years but these are far superior. You are better paying a bit more.

Got some vouchers last Christmas from Winfields. Bought some Cotswold Winstone leather boots for about £60. Plus a tub of wax! Got to say they've been excellent. Fully waterproof and comfortable. Also quite roomy so you can wear thicker socks for winter walking. When it comes to winter/ wet walking, Leather all the way for me. Take a bit more looking after mind. Hence the wax. I also have some Salomon GTX . They've better for summer/ dry walking. A bit tighter fit though. Bought a few pairs of boots down the years. Don't always have to cost the earth.

dermotdermot. Is there a specific style you recommend. I've had a good read about the Zamberlan range and found the
Zamberlan Trail Lite GTX looks to be of interest to me, just wondered what your thoughts were.

All I can say is that I bought a pair of Zamberlan Treklite boots along with my other half buying a pair of Zamberlan Ladylite boots about thirty years ago and they still look as if they have hardly been worn. I religiously treated them with hydro block treating after use but it’s not just the leather, the soles and heals have hardly worn down at at all. If you google them you will find that the Treklites have been discontinued and no wonder, if you read the reviews. They are indestructible. Zamberlan would have gone out of business if they’d carried on making them. I’m sure that they do make a comparable line but I’m not sure what they would be called. If I did need to buy another pair of boots I would plump for them.

If you decide to shop at Winfields for your hiking boots I recommend you also purchase some Hi-Tec Silver Shadow alongside them. They will be perfect for when you want to kick back and relax after a long day of walking

Meindl are very good hiking boots and a pair of these will typically last over ten years, I kid you not. You could probably find Meindl Borneo for around your budget of £150 and if you are willing to spend a little bit more then buy the Meindl Burma boots.
I have owned a pair of Borneo’s for over 15 years, I walk fairly regularly and they are still in good nick. I do treat the leather regularly though with Meindl Sportwax.
A walking friend of mine swears by Brasher boots, they are good and a little bit softer than the Meindl however the soles wear out too quickly.

Obviously cheaper buying on line but not always the best.

I would recommend that you buy your boots from a shop that offers a fitting service, you will be paying more but will be getting a boot that fits correctly.
My wife is due a new pair as her Solomons are shot at after only two years. I shall be taking her to the shop in Whalley and most certainly not be buying Solomons

Buy British https://www.altberg.co.uk/
Built to wide foot last - many of the European boots are a narrow last - meindl an exception.
Get your boots properly fitted https://www.whalleyoutdoor.co.uk/.
£200 may seem a lots but goid leather boots last for years and can be resoled.
People will pay £300 for a fancy jacket yet want bargain boots madness.
Avoid Winfields returns policy is a nightmare.

I bought some DLX boots from winfields for about 50 quid. I've covered loads of miles in them lately through mud, snow and water and they have been absolutely fine. They have kept my feet dry and blister free.
I've not tried them on the North face of Eiger yet (or wore them while invading Poland), but I certainly won't be rushing out to spend hundreds of pounds on some of the stuff suggested on here

That's fair enough Damo, but you get what you pay for, but your choice will be made dependent on where you walk.
I do long distance walks, mountains and at the moment local moors and hills, and based on my lifestyle in the hills I need Gtx, good sole, comfort and durability.
I was walking with a friend a few years ago in upper Wharfedale and he was telling me how good his boots were and what a bargain they were. Next news, the sole completely came off one of his boots. We were quite near the end so it wasn't a problem, but it was raining, we were in a marshy area and we got back without incident, but it could have been a problem.
But as I said before if you are buying at a price that suits your abilty and your choice of walks then there is a lot of choice . Read on line reviews as well.

I very much doubt fallschirmjager (jump boots) would have been deployed during the blitzkrieg initially the Luftwaffe softened prior to & whilst the land invasion would have been carried out so most tank units would have used Jack boots similar to rigger boots, I guess it’s a nice dreamy exercise to think that the fallschirmjinger boots were the soldiers first choice of equipment when undertaking plans to divide Poland, but why let reality become an inconvenient obstacle in the way of humour.

Zamberlan trail lite gtx is what I have now. Tip: you may need a size larger than normal as other posters have suggested. I normally take Euro size 43 but needed a 44 for Zamberlans.

That is why you should buy from a shop that offers a fitting service and not on line

Putneyclaret. There looks to be two styles with almost identical descriptions. The ones I want are the Zamberlan 309 New Trail Lite Goretex. Are yours the ones with a metal badge just above the ankle that says Gore Tex.

Billy. I'd be interested to see which make/style you eventually settle on if that's okay.

They do an Ultra Lite too. Very similar but with a slightly different sole. I have a pair. I’m not an expert, I spend more time in fell running shoes, but they’ve been great. I’ll second the go for a size bigger comment.

I got a pair of Berghaus boots about 20 years ago, and they're still going strong. They were about £200 back then, so not cheap, but they've lasted this long as are extremely comfortable and still completely waterproof.
