Burnley 1970-Present - Best Squad of last 50 Years

Post by jedi_master » Sat Jan 09, 2021 11:38 pm

The age old topic of ‘what’s our best ever squad’ has been done to death, and rightly gets dominated by the players that brought us our 1950s-60s success, in the main. This makes sense and is obvious, but makes the question almost academic/depending on when you were born. As we have ten days ago reached 50 years from 1970, I wondered what is the best team from then till now that anyone can put together.

I am 34, and I’m always curious when I hear about the teams of the past (especially the 70’s which my Dad talks to me about) how they stacked up against our players over the last 7-8 years. So, purely to get the perspective from those who were there as to just how good our players have been since 1970, what’s the best match day squad possible of players you’ve seen play for Burnley since 1970?

Nick Pope
Kieran Trippier
James Tarkowski
Ben Mee
Charlie Taylor
Wade Elliott
Joey Barton
Steven Defour
Robbie Blake
Danny Ings
Charlie Austin

Tom Heaton
Michael Keane
Glen Little
Scott Arfield
Chris Wood

(Have to have seen them play, have to have two keepers. Any formation).

I could only see Leighton James and Martin Dobson Competing at todays Level... Ben Mee Joey B. And Tom Heaton would have got into a 1970s side. .....the rest wouldn't have got no where near due to the style of play.....and the shocking state of the pitches.thats my take on it.maybe Charlie Austin to.

I think there are such as Colin Waldron, Peter Noble, Dave Thomas & Frank Casper would be under serious consideration. Keith Newton would walk in.
