Know nothing about the horses. However I pretty sure Lord Derby at that time would have been one of the Stanley’s... another football connection to the Palatine. Like I said, it isn’t really my field, just conversations I’ve had with Steve over the years, a fellow Claret so naturally football features heavily in our chats.

Re: Trivia facts ....
I remember reading it was late 1700s? Racing horses is from the 1600s, so it must have been a while before it was named the Derby.
Re: Trivia facts ....
The first Derby was 1780. The race didn't exist before then. I don't know when it became the pre-eminent race.
Incidentally, they reckon racing at the Curragh (Ireland) has been going on at that site since a thousand years earlier - about the 600s AD.

Re: Trivia facts ....
They definitely had horse racing in the 1600s, just perhaps not that exact course. Interesting, all the same.
And an interesting thread - we should keep it going with lots of very random subjects.

If anybody is interested, where does the expression Elephant in the Room, come from?

In 1963 they had a baby elephant escape and it hid in the back room of Johnny Morris's old keepers hut.
No idea Frank just making rubbish up
But it could be....
In 1814, Ivan Krylov (1769–1844), poet and fabulist, wrote a fable entitled "The Inquisitive Man", which tells of a man who goes to a museum and notices all sorts of tiny things, but fails to notice an elephant. The phrase became proverbial.

Agreed that Preston is a Lancs derby. So for that matter is Blackpool.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 3:46 pmHaha, not going into that level of semantics Preston is a Derby and was our first League opponent.
Yet it is not semantics but simple geographical fact that Preston v Blackpool is the West Lancs derby, and Burnley v Blackburn the East Lancs.

Redbeard, join in with the facts. Elephant in the Room. I remember it about somebody visiting a museum and taking an interest in everything but failing to see an elephant.

2021 is going to be the shortest year in almost a century.
As the Earth is rotating faster, it is calculated to be around 19 milliseconds shorter than the average year.

Re: Trivia facts ....
Even if you're discounting Halifax for being 'over the border', surely Bury, Rochdale and perhaps even Bolton are all nearer to Burnley than Preston?
That Ashbourne 'football' match is still going on now - pancake day - I played in it three times in the early 1990s, courtesy of a workmate who was an 'Upperd', though I never actually touched the ball.

Re: Trivia facts ....
Someone mentioned "Bunbury" earlier in reference to "The Derby" it was Sir Charles Bunbury who owned the 1st winner...

With respect Claret, there are some Trivia facts that are better not repeated, and this is 1 of them.

Always kept an elephant by his side. Like sleeping by your car.
