Perhaps it was, stupid rule IMO. You can’t argue that Utd played us off the park second half though, even with us being back to being Burnley again which is good to see.

For me Dyche lost us that game.
Wood completely disappeared that second half and still we pumped balls upfield.
The one good sign was McNeil coming back.

We don't need another striker, that game was against a top of the table team.warksclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:17 pmA performance of sheer guts-well done team for performing heroics against a team that cost 10 times more than ours. I don't think SD will drop him. I'd give him time on the bench to give him a bit of a reset.

Though we nullified them well.
Play that 10 times over, 5 we lose, 3 we draw, 2 we sneak the 1-0 win.

Deservedly beaten. Good first half. Dominated by United in the second half. Some people need to give themselves a break from their unnecessary negativity and lack of perspective. Thought Vydra looked bright and he deserves more game time.

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
Joeliton at Newcastle springs to mind, and he cost a lot more than Wood, I do agree we need to start Vydra at West Ham, whether that's with Barnes or Jay Rod I don't know, but tonight is another night we've drawn a blank, and not even managed a shot on target, so we might as well give Vydra a game or two to see if he can do any better, Wood's confidence is shot, and if possible a game or two for the u23's may help him rediscover his scoring touch.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:09 pmI’m not sure there is a worse striker in the league right now than wood (who happens to be our most expensive player)
Amazingly despite all his critics he's still our top marksman this season with 3 goals, but this just highlights our lack of cutting edge, and as well as our defence are playing, and did play again tonight we can't rely on clean sheets every game, sooner or later we need to notch a goal or two to ease the pressure on our back line.

Re: The Shaw incident
Seems like he was making it up as he went along to me. I can't recall ever seeing the VAR overturn a free kick for one team by awarding a free kick to the other team for a separate incident at the other end of the pitch.dpinsussex wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:23 pmMy understanding is they go and check the red card by Shaw. The decision was that it did not have sufficient force in the challenge to be a red, clearly therefore a missed caution that created the opportunity for United. Brady challenge was deemed irrelevant.
Very grey in the laws of the game tbh too
They can be interpreted to permit a yellow
Obviously it would have been unjust for Man Utd to have a free kick in a goalscoring position due to the refs ineptitude in not awarding us a free kick in the first place, but I didn't think they could just make things up on the spot.
Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
We just have to follow the same formula beat the teams around us.

Some big decisions for SD, front two as good as they have been are offering nothing. Vydra...yes he missed 2 chances...but he's getting into positions Wood could only dream of.

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
We’ve scored 23 goals in our last 32 competitive matches. That’s nowhere near good enough.
Defensively sound, took a deflected goal to beat us. Plenty of positives. Need to get some more creativity into this squad though.

Yep, both teams reverted to type second half. We were simply SO us and they were their usual slick, attack minded, front foot selves, but we were brilliant at being us and were so, so unfortunate to be undone by a deflected goal.
Having said that we did have our chances and Tarks and Vydra were both guilty at the end! I'm sad.

The very basic problem with Wood is that subconsciously he thinks he’s undroppable because we don’t have anyone pushing him. It’s a mentality thing. Maybe Dyche needs to drop him for Vydra or Jay Rod next game, and use him as the impact sub
Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
Isn't one of the main Wood criticisms that he misses too many big chances? So therefore, he must get into decent shooting positions. Alright, he didn't tonight, but Vydra's chances weren't actually that good either.

I think it’s not even worth highlighting woods goal tally because we have effectively played with 10 men all season.

Wood needs a break. Barnes worked his backside off but was getting nothing from Wood.
Vydra looked lively but always looks like he is trying to hard and lacks composure.
Lets not argue the toss over who is the worst. Fact is that at the moment our striking options aren't great.

Wood, and to a lesser extent Barnes, are becoming a big problem for Dyche. There was absolutely no outlet second half with those two on the field and we desperately need more pace and invention in that area.
Is it terminal for Wood? No, I don't think so, but he's a player desperately out of form.

Point taken.
I just think that Vydra creates his chances through a bit of smart movement and footwork whereas Wood needs putting in.....
then they both miss

In the first half , United played with 2 holding midfielders which enabled us to compete/nullify their attacking play . When they moved Pogba forward to play alongside Fernandes , there was no way Westy and Brownhill could play against them . They needed help in there .

Thought McNeil and Vydra looked lively, hard fought with not much ball retention or chances created. Wood should’ve been hooked 20 minutes sooner, looks overweight and so far off the pace. I much prefer us with Vydra and Rodriguez in the side, less aimless stuff and more neat interplay.

No chance he drops Wood against West Ham.
Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
Yes and no.
Around the 60 minute mark, we had a chance to break. Westwood picked up the ball in our half and had the opportunity to drive forward, but didn’t. He lashed it forward in the general vicinity of Barnes and the ball was lost.
We brought McNeill on but never got him on the ball.
We play how we play. We don’t player with a number 10 because that would mean a change from 4-4-2.

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
It's strange how Wood has suddenly dipped in form, in his previous 3 seasons he's always looked and proven to be our most likely source of a goal.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:23 pmAt least Joelinton offers a bit of hold up play and stretching the defence.
I couldn’t highlight one thing in that game (or even a touch of the ball) where I think wood contributed.
I think it’s not even worth highlighting woods goal tally because we have effectively played with 10 men all season.
But yes I do agree when he doesn't score then you do have to question what he brings to the team.
I think we all hoped him and Ash bagging against wolves would spur them on to a scoring spree, but sadly it's just not happened, and how long do we keep saying they'll both come good, if Jay and Vydra are fit I'd probably start them on Saturday, there's no guarantee they'll fare any better, but their form as a duo at the back end of last season offers us hope that they can at least provide a threat up top, which right now we're sorely lacking.
Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Match Thread
Doesn't deserve to start at the moment, cherry pick small moments all you want...but Vydra deserves a run of games.

If it was only a free kick VAR wouldn't have been able to intervene, but it could because it would have been a red card for Brady and a potential red card for Shaw.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:20 pmSeems like he was making it up as he went along to me.
