Best English,Welsh,Scottish,Irish,Northern Irish Claret you have watched?

Post by bfcjg » Sat Jan 16, 2021 10:15 pm

Something to take your mind of today's disappointment.
It has to be the best not your favourite ie Glen Little my favourite English player but not the best English player we have had IMHO. You have to clearly remember them playing live be it on the turf, tele or match of the day etc so it's obviously limited to your age range. No negatives please if you don't agree it is opinion based and you may have forgotten a player I've had a few beers so may well have done so. I've gone for where they were born or international eligibility.
English, Dobson sublime, calm elegant powerful genuine leader. Runner up Peter Noble box to box midfielder could play the killer pass and scored for fun. Almost Pope, could go to any Prem club.
Welsh, Leighton James, always buzz in the Longside when he got the ball great dribbler ,crosser scorer of goals and all at speed. Runner up Brian Flynn, dynamic midfielder whose lack of height was more then compensated by his skill and drive. Almost Sam Vokes.
Scottish,Jim Thompson mr dependable solid.Runner up Steve Fletcher didn't look out of place in the Prem for us. Almost Ian Britton thanks for everything.
Irish Steven Ward, what a player great defender, link player, cool great crosser so reliable, runner up Jeff Hendrick underated, chipped in with some great and vital goals and would play out of position. Almost Chris McCann glimpses of what a talent he could be.
Northern Ireland. Billy Hamilton great goal scorer and so powerful. Runner up Michael Duff, leader great player
so organised.Almost, Terry Cochrane lit up some dismal games with his skill and a great goal at bstards as well.

The best that I've watched who've played for Burnley , but not necessarily playing their best football at the time.

Northern Ireland- Billy Hamilton

Wales - Leighton James

Ireland- Robbie Brady

Scotland - Kevin Clifton "Ted" McMinn

England- Paul Gascoigne.

The People's Republic of Padiham- Andrew Payton

Wales: Gareth Taylor pipping out Sam vokes although I might think differently by lunchtime
Northern Ireland: Tommy cassidy
Scotland: Graham alexander
Eire: Stephen ward
England: Charlie Taylor. I'm just ignoring that the fop didn't pick him even though he had no fit alternative left back at the time.

Not necessarily the best in terms of ability but certainly in terms of entertainment, that I've seen:

England : Glen Little
Wales - Leighton James (of what I can remember)
Scotland - Ted McMinn
N Ireland - Michael Duff
Eire - Stephen Ward

I’m assuming it’s not based on performances for Burnley but mine are.

England: Brian O’Neil
Scotland: Willie Morgan
Wales: Leighton James
N Ireland: Jimmy McIlroy
Rep of Ireland: Stephen Ward

England: Nick Pope/Tom Heaton/Ben Mee/James Tarkowski/Michael Keane/Dwight McNeil/Danny Ings - take your pick, all fantastic but if I had to pick just one - Ben Mee
Scotland: Steven Fletcher
Wales: Sam Vokes
Northern Ireland: Kyle Lafferty
Ireland: Stephen Ward

I wouldn't disagree with any of those but would have been a toss up with Trevor Stephen for me except that his best came after he had left.
