January/February

Post by ClaretMov » Sun Jan 17, 2021 9:29 am

We can probably count Sheff Utd and West Brom relegated unless a miracle happens so That leaves one place left, I think its between us, Fulham and Brighton and possibly Newcastle dragged into it but doubt it, by the end of February we should have a clearer picture of who the 3rd team will be, looking at the Jan/Feb fixtures it's looking very tough for Burnley to pull clear of the drop zone.

Burnley fixtures

Liverpool A
Villa H
Chelsea A
Man City H
Brighton H
Palace H
West Brom H
Spurs A

I think we will get between 6 and 8 point's

Brighton fixtures

Fulham H
Spurs H
Liverpool A
Burnley A
Villa H
Palace H
West Brom A

I think Brighton could pick up 4 and 6

Fulham fixtures

Man utd H
Brighton A
West Brom A
Leicester H
West Ham H
Everton A
Sheff Utd H
Palace A

And Fulham could pick up 6 to 8 point's

Looking at those fixtures I predict Brighton to make up the last relegation place but it will probably go to the last 2 or 3 games

My concern and it's a real concen is that we're not creating chances unlike West Brom, Brighton and Fulham.

West Brom won at wolves yes but it was only their 2nd win in 18 games, they are 5 points behind a safety place having played a game more on average than the other team's, they are very poor along with us and Brighton but we have a bit more experience than West Brom over the last few season's in the premier league

Hammered ???? I hardly call a win by one goal, and two penalties one was very very soft a hammering

No corners
Half the shots to Wolves
Half the possession to Wolves

I'd write Sheff Utd off, despite their win over Newcastle they'll need an amazing run to survive, and I just can't see it.

That was a big result for West Brom yesterday, and they came from behind to achieve it, the advantage for them is they can at least score goals, yes they're leaky at the back, but if you're scoring you've always got a chance of winning enough games.

Things could of course change, but as the table stands it's looking like 3 from 6, I can't see anybody from Wolves and above getting dragged in despite some of those teams being on poor runs, they've probably got enough credit in the bank to ensure survival.

So it'll probably come down to the head-to-head games between those 6, and also who can pinch points against the other teams, we've done well in the head-to-heads thus far.

Draws at West Brom & Brighton, plus beating Sheff Utd, so if we can maintain that form and rack up a few more wins against our direct rivals, that should give us some breathing space.

The next 4 will be tough, but if we can nick a point or two out of that run, then the 3 games after that should offer us a decent chance of putting a good few points on the board, Brighton, Palace and West Brom are all teams that we can definitely take points from, and indeed we already have this season, so those fixtures shouldn't hold any fear for us normally, the big worry is our lack of goals, no matter who we play we don't look capable of scoring more than 1 a game, and that's being generous, thankfully our defence often keeps us in games, and that's what will give us a fighting chance of survival, that and our experience in a dogfight, if I was a betting man I'd tip us to stay up, but it will be tight, and could even go right to the wire.

We have Fulham to play twice. Win those two games and we should stay up with relative ease as that would be ten points Fulham would have to better us by in the rest of the games. Even a win and a draw (8pts) would probably be enough, as for all Fulham’s turn around in fortune / performances they have been drawing games and over that run we have caught them and gone past them after our horrendous start. The game yesterday was horrid (but we’ve had plenty of them every season) yet against Man Utd (who subsequently went top of the league) we were very competitive firsts half and could easily have nicked a draw. We need to improve in attack but we should be fine.

Fulham look to have too much to go down. WBA managed to score 3 goals in a game. Stuff of dreams for us.We don’t look remotely like being able to score one at the moment. Us and Sheff U look the two worst teams currently.

I don’t see the point in making predictions like this. I seem to remember everyone doing this last January too and getting it badly wrong.

We got beat yesterday and the next 4 fixtures are tough but the season doesn’t end then. Long way to go.

Yesterday was very disappointing and frustrating but there’s been a huge over-reaction to the defeat.

Fulham are winless in 7 games since their victory at Leicester back in November, what on earth makes you think they have too much to go down based on that form, West Brom did well yesterday, but 2 of their goals were penalties, yes we need to improve our goal tally, but let's not make these teams out to be better than they are, they're in the bottom 3 for a reason, and that reason is they don't win enough games, if we can't finish above at least 3 of the bottom 6 then we'll rightly deserve to go down, but I don't think we will, we'll squeeze enough wins out to keep our heads above water, it might not be pretty, but it'll do the job required.

Fulham have had a really tough run of games, but still managed to pick up a few points. They've definetely shown signs that they're improving.

Yes I'd agree they are improving, but they'll still be in the mix, 2 wins in 17 games doesn't lie.

Fulham do seem to play some good football , but they're very shaky at the back . From what I've seen , Newcastle are definitely in the mix .

Need to look at the teams they won against as well. Wolves are in a dreadful run and I’ve always said their ‘unique’ infrastructure will be their undoing. And I’m not ‘having’ Leeds either - they can’t defend to save their lives and I fully believe they’ll be dragged into it.

If Zaha gets injured Crystal Palace can easily get dragged into it.

Without him they hardly ever win.

Over-reaction on here surely not  that would never happen on here would it?

Frustration is the key word, we're not playing that badly in most games, but if you can't score it makes the task of picking up points and wins an awful lot harder.

Despite our lack of goals we're still outside the drop zone by 4 points, and we have games in hand over most of the teams around us, certainly far too early to press the panic button, as many are doing on here. I still think we'll be OK come May, however we will need to add quality in the summer, as the weaknesses in this squad are becoming clearer by the game, lack of creativity, and zero pace, plus mis-firing strikers, that's not a good combination, and unless we address those issues head on it'll be another season or struggle next year. The main thing right now is to ensure we're still a PL club come the summer.

And in 6 games time there’s a distinct chance we’ll be near the bottom of the form table.
