Friday is just chippy night, thats the law right?

Can anyone recommend a decent chippy thats in reasonable distance of Crawshawbooth, aware of Toff's but not a massive fan, and Kays of Rawtenstall but after somewhere else as last night ended up waiting over 45 mins at Kays despite ordering it beforehand for a 18:20 pick up.

Can anyone recommend a really good chippy?

Not around you I’m afraid.

Few and far between good chippys I have found. Tried most in Burnley, but I’m always disappointed.

I live in Burnley, and travel to Holt’s in Nelson for mine.

Just as long as you keep in mind, it's Saturday. I had to look at the calendar on my PC to make sure I wasn't imagining things!

Miles from Crawshawbooth I know, but the chip shop in Sutton in Craven (betwixt Skipton and Keighley) is the best for miles around, do the frying in beef dripping too :P

Cant believe people still bother with traditional chippy's. Just get yourself down the McD's drive through cos their fries are quality. Also got the added bonus to treat yourself to a Friday night Apple Pie for pudding

Has the one up BurnleyWood gone down hill? Used to make a point of visiting whenever I was in town. Always exceptional compared to Wiltshire offerings..

Brown Lea chippy was always a school lunch treat, I think that might have been more the buzz of sneaking out of school. Proper rebels.

Our favourite too. It’s a cracking place and we’ve never felt like we’ve been served a small portion. The pies are from DT Law and they’re very good.

Last chippy tea was from Ilex in Rawtenstall before Xmas. Ordered for 6.30pm on line, I arrived at the shop at 6.25pm, my order was sat waiting, unfortunately the quality was poor because it had been sat on the counter to long.

Last Friday I thought I would try again but just cold call then I would get them fresh. When I arrived their must have been 20 plus outside including Jamie Hoyland, so I gave it a miss and popped around to Tesco

The guy who owns Ilex is only 23 and served his apprenticeship in his dads chippy down Ossie, he has spent a fortune on the place and last week had a complete new range installed

I wish him well and I am sure he will nail it

I had to google this as I wasn't sure where you were talking about, but this is Kay's the place I went to last night. We do like the F&C's from here and order every friday night, but last night was simply a disaster. Ordered at 12:30 for a 18:20 pick up (on way home from work) and arrived at 18:15 only to find about 20 people stood outside also waiting. Finally got my order at 19:00 and drove home only to find items missing from the order. Finally sat down to very cold F&Cs at 19:40. Really is a shame as we normally love the food but after customer service like that I'll never return.
Think we'll go to the Old Mans at Rawenstall as recommened above and thanks all for the suggestions.

The Scillies are a fish and chip graveyard... Absolute pish... Not a thing worth the name over here...the local peasants will settle for any old crap.

Its that bad that 3 years ago I invested in a good sized deep frying set up... I catch and prep my own fish in abundance as and when required, grow plenty of good chipping spuds and source good quality beef dripping when visiting mainland.

Friday lives on as fish and chip night in my house at least.

Sorry I should have said Kays.

He has been closed for 2 weeks doing renovation work, has had a new range fitted which was more than likely the problem

So you love the place but one night it goes wrong because it's that busy and maybe a staff member not turned in?
They will be under huge pressure. Give them a chance. It's not easy at the minute.

As for the chip off the old block in Padiham. It's been so popular they have opened another place next door for burgers and steaks. Everyone raves about it. The bonus is they deliver too. Available on Burnley eats.

But Wellsy says it's crap so it must be.

Yeah I fully get that and understand and it might seem a bit harsh but if you're that swamped with people/orders don't continue to just carry on taking more and more. They had my order at 12:30 for a 18:20 pick up, they had enough notice, 5/10 min wait I can put up with but then to wait 40 mins and then the orders got items missing, no I'm sorry, why would anyone return no matter how good it was.

It's fine not to like something and fine not to go back. Everyone has different tastes.
But to label it crap is wrong.

If it was crap it would have shut down by now. Far too much long established competition in a small town.

Another no vote for the new Padiham chippy. I've only been once but that was enough. The chips looked, and tasted like they had been sitting round being kept warm all day and the fish was dried out and tasteless, which was surprising because it was about 17:30 when I went to the place.
Another bad one was Ightenhill Fish Bar. Massive portions but not good quality.
If there is a reliably good chippy in Burnley I would like to know where it is.

There more to it than personal preference. Buy the best spuds you can source, same with the fish etc, use good quality oil/dripping and change it regularly. I'm basically describing a good chippy.

True it can make all the difference the factors you’ve mentioned, but he/she are generally right you can have all the best ingredients in the world & the best methods of cooking & you are still not guaranteed that people will like it, some people can appreciate quality & some people can’t. Some people wouldn’t know a good chippy if it hit them on the head because there are conditioned into liking crap bluntly put.

I have been a few times and when it first opened I thought it was superb. The home made burgers especially to die for. Last 2 or 3 times though they have dipped below their high standards for me. Wasn’t the worst by any stretch just not as good as it was when it opened.
