How do we bid for players we want?

Post by Mala591 » Sun Jan 24, 2021 10:20 am

As a first step does our Chairman ring (out of the blue) the Chairman of the club who’s player we are interested in?

What is the usual series of events?

Officially its meant to start with club to club contact, but it's a given that it starts with contacting the agent to see if the player would be interested in the move.

Then we ask for the price and go in at half that then increase it £10 per bid until we are told to bog off and we pretend to the fan's we tried, smoke and mirrors I think it's called

Or we chase a player other clubs are after knowing we have no chance of competing with, it's another smoke and mirrors trick.

If that’s how it works claretmov, makes you wonder how we ended up with this team eh?

So, we contact the player’s agent and offer double the Championship player’s current salary?

It must be more difficult than that.

Nope.

We contact agent, see if player is interested in a move to Burnley.
The agent let's us know if its a yes, with provisions attached, or a no.

Then we have to contact the players club, we can't make any monetary offers until a sale has been agreed.

Investment is coming from people which this is totally new too, in a sport they arent familiar with, in a relentless league, in the toughest window of the 2, at the toughest time for premier league football in a long time.

All that and theyve been here 24 days, and the main main contracted covid and has had to isolate for 10+ days.

It was going to be super hard in this window regardless, however I still think we will pick up 2-3 signings.

He can only fully be judged after 3 full windows, and a whole year in charge IMO.
We will then hopefully not only hear the plan, but see it too.

If I was a betting man, I'd still say we will probably spend more this window than the previous 3 combined under the last lot, even with all the issues listed above.

It literally cant get any worse IMO.
Hopefully Dyche will stay so he can have a bash with the new plans and finances

Watch the Only Fools & Horses episode where Rodders buys the lawn mowers and you'll have a good starting point

So, does Dyche hand a list of, let’s say, ten ‘most wanted’ players to the Chairman for him to approve/reject contact with the players’ agents?

Does a player have to have an agent? If not, would the buyer go straight to the club?

Somewhere in all of this - and surprising that no one has mentioned - there may be:

1) scouting activities;
2) players that the manager already knows, maybe managed at previous club, maybe knows through his playing contacts...
3) players that the Burnley team already know, maybe because they played together at a previous club...

The manager writes a list at Christmas and posts it off to Santa.

1. Stand aghast at the prices and how fast the market is moving.
2. Panic.
3. Crank up the fax machine.

Let’s just say Dyche decides he wants the club to sign Adam Armstrong. He meets with Pace (who agrees in principle) and then Pace must decide (along with the other directors) our absolute maximum bid and maximum weekly salary - let’s say £15 million and £50,000 per week (which is obviously kept highly confidential).

Pace then contacts the player’s agent (Stellar Football Ltd) to enquire whether their player might be interested in moving to our club?

Am I anywhere near the actual series of events?

You’ve not factored in the team that are employed to identify suitable players in the first place. A hell of a lot of work goes in before a club like ours will sanction a £15m purchase. Also, I think it’s doubtful that Pace would be making contact with the players’ agent. Football clubs often use agents to negotiate on their behalf.

And you’ve massively over simplified the financials. It’s isn’t a case of a simple transfer fee and maximum salary. There are a lot more factors in the structuring of the deal.

Players talk to other players: on international duties

Players talk to players they know through history, clubs, academy’s.

Players share agents and so talk to each other.

Recruitment team identify (at all times) an active list of suitable players. This stretches from 1st team ready through to academies.

Recruitment team meet with manager, assistant and board monthly/bi monthly to strategically plan internal assists and external recruitment.

Group/individual Agents approach clubs, mainly for OOC or for free agents.

The move would also be dependent on the selling club getting a replacement for the player coming to us on most occasions before it's sanctioned.

You would think so, but how many times has one of ours fell through over personal terms or the player not fancying it ?

The PFA would represent the player.

Dunno now many we've lost out on through personal terms.
I know we've lost a few cos the selling club hasn't managed to secure a replacement, on deadline day and several morons on here have then gone on to berate Burnley...

Are there any particular posters on here who you think actually knows the answers to these tedious questions?
