German Football ...

Post by Clarets4me » Tue Jan 26, 2021 12:07 am

It's good to see 5/6 Clubs vying for top spot in the Premier League, and especially Burnley proving the old maxim correct, that anyone can beat anyone on any given day ....

However in Germany, Bayern Munich are seven points clear and look to be on course for their ninth successive title ... yawn ! Growing up in the late 1960's and 1970's, I looked at some names I recalled from European competition ... There are 3 National Leagues in Germany, with Four Regional pyramids below them ..

Halfway through the season, Schalke 04 look doomed to relegation, 11 points away from safety. SV Hamburg, our nemesis in 1961, lead the 2nd division whilst Fortuna Dusseldorf ( losing ECWC finalists in 1979 to Barcelona ) lie just outside the play-offs in 4th. Our fun-loving friends from Hannover occupy 6th place.

Two famous names occupy the top two spots in the 3rd Tier, Dynamo Dresden, regular representatives of the old East Germany, and Munich 1860 ( beaten by West Ham in the 1965 ECWC final ). At the bottom end, both FC Magdeberg ( ECWC winners in 1974 ) and F.C.Kaiserslautern are both battling against relegation to one of the four 4th tier regional leagues.

In the fourth tier, we find Carl Zeiss Jena ( ECWC Runners up 1981 ), and Lokomotive Leipzig ( ECWC Runners up 1987 ), as well as the fabulously named Kickers Offenbach, ( West Germany's ECWC representatives in 1970-71 ). We have to look down to the 6th tier to find Vowarts Berlin ( ECWC semi-finalists in 1971 ), now known as FC Frankfurt. They were renamed after re-unification due to some rather unsavoury links to the East German military .. :(

I didn't realise that the Bundesliga was only formed in 1963. Previously, the title of German Champions was determined by a series of play offs between the winners of the Regional Leagues. The other strange fact is that no team from the National Capital has ever won the Bundesliga, either from Bonn, or Berlin .... that might just be unique in Europe !

Kaiserslautern were a good team in the 90s. 2 titles, the last one managed by Otto Rehhagel who won Euro 02 with Greece.

I've always had a soft spot for Hamburger SV since we played them in 1961. I was hugely impressed with a team coming all the way from West Germany to play us and I think that, at the time, my thought was they were the only team in that country.

For some time they were one of the big clubs in the Bundesliga but they've struggled for a few year now. The relegation in 2018 had been inevitable for a few years and in the two seasons since they've blown the promotion. I watched them last week, they won 5-0 against VfL Osnabrück but it was pretty poor football. They are on TV again tomorrow against Fortuna Düsseldorf. I knew signing up for BT Sport would come in useful. One day I will make the trip there to watch a home game.

I follow the fortunes, or should that be misfortunes of 1.F.C.Kaiserslautern. Been in free fall for several years now. I went to a couple of games in the 90’s.
Another team I’ve seen a couple of times, Eintracht Trier. Both could be playing each other soon.

My favourite team doing a bit better - Werder Bremen - good young coach who survived a torrid season. Club investing in youth and had a great win against Hertha Berlin last week.

I went to Bochum last year to watch a game, absolutely loved it. Great atmosphere and great game. Same weekend we watched Dortmund Vs Freiburg and Dusseldorf Vs Hertha. Bochum was best of the bunch.

Went to watch St pauli v Darmstadt in October 2019 with a Burnley pal and a few Northampton Town lads. The standard of football wasn't great, but the 30,000 fans made a racket all game, creating a wonderful atmosphere. It didn't seem to matter that St Pauli lost. Having a pint whilst watching the game was another plus. Hamburg is a great city.

I went to a St Pauli game in February 2019 and I totally agree with everything you say. The atmosphere was brilliant, non-stop singing for ninety plus minutes. The atmosphere at the Turf pales in significance really, although nothing beats being emotionally invested like at a Burnley game. But yeah, I'd love to go back to the Millerntor at some point, it's a fantastic stadium and a great club. The atmosphere outside the stadium (and German stadiums in general) is what I think Pace would like at Turf Moor. Tail-gate vibes. Was impressed with the units between the turnstiles which seemed to be leased out to independent supporter's clubs to sell scarves and badges etc. The club shop was incredible too. The amount of stock...!

And yeah, Hamburg is a gorgeous city. I really liked it. And my flights only cost £60. (Though I've flown London - Oslo for a Lyn game for just £7 before!)

Mention of Schalke 04 reminded me of this recent story regarding their poor run of form:
