Re: 4 contract extensions
Whilst I agree with extending Longs contract providing he is still going to be playing backup, I can see the argument that calls him out on the lack of ambition. You get one career as a footballer and he has essentially given himself no chance to improve or better himself by being content to stay on the bench. Players improve with games so he could have been a lot better than he is viewed currently and I am sure when he retires he will have a few regrets.
Yes the money he's earned will be good but there should be more to it than that for most footballers

Re: 4 contract extensions
Maybe he's happy to part of a great dressing room? He might mot get that if he moved, as Sam Vokes found out.DCWat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 4:15 pmHe will surely look back on his career, at some point in the future, and have some regrets.
OK, so he’s picked up a good wage, he may well be very happy at Burnley and be a big part of the group - ultimately though, it’s a very short career and he’s not done too much other than be an OK, occasional backup.
Each to their own, I just hope he doesn’t end up wishing he’d done things differently.
Sean likes him because he's versatile, as we found out again at Fulham.
Re: 4 contract extensions
Those questioning his ambition should perhaps look at it from another angle.
Maybe he is showing ambition and backing himself to be a regular starter if/when Tarks leaves. He could well (and I’d expect him to be) saying to himself I’m better than the centre halves the clubs being linked with, I’m going to get my chance and take it.
Now, I must add that not for one minute do I think he’s good enough, but maybe HE does and as a professional sportsmen you’d hope he had an air of self belief.

Re: 4 contract extensions
What if Kevin Long signed for Derby for instance and they were relegated. The move didn't quite work out and they get a new manager who brings his own new player in.
His next contract would be about 1k a week somewhere.
It would be stupid of him to move. He's got it cushy here

Re: 4 contract extensions
Seems like the new chairman's 'keep that chip on the old shoulder' is ringing true on this thread.
Just because you can't earn the money Long is making and be a pro footballer at the same time. Get over it. If you had a family, job security, especially in these times, and the pressure of performing only in training exercises then you'd do the same. The majority of people are mercenaries and will take the position with the most money! Clearly, Long is happy with that, who are we to judge a person's decisions. It's exactly what's wrong with people, it makes no difference to your life so let them be. You're just sounding jealous and pathetic.

Long is the guy on TV you can't remember his name but you see him pop up in lots of good stuff, he's clearly making a fine living and having fun doing it without ever breaking out into the public consciousness.
Success means different things to different people, well done to him.

Re: 4 contract extensions
Look i have always liked Kevin as he steps in when called upon and does a good job for the team .
Team is the key word he is a vital cog in that and i bet Sean lets him know it .
He is an international player also .
Now not quite sure how long Kevin has been at the club without looking it up but must be close to 10 years , and at a guess he will be on around say £15,000 a week , so all in all he has done really well for himself and for the club also so as it's a two way street .
I would say he loves the club to be here that long and i for one at 100% behind him .

Re: 4 contract extensions
No issue with anything there Tribsemen, EXCEPT that Long really isn't good enough. Look at the start we had to the season. It's no good himk being a loyal bench warmer if he really isn't quite good enough to play when needed.Tribesmen wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 11:42 amLook i have always liked Kevin as he steps in when called upon and does a good job for the team .

Re: 4 contract extensions
Hmmmm. Pieters and Lowton are good cover players going forward. JBG depends in if he can stay fit. Long? Meh. Id rather bring in a younger player as understudy (although that could be Dunne)

Re: 4 contract extensions
Gibson has probably left a bitter taste in the mouth, paying a fee & a wage for a player who could potentially be good enough for the starting XI but threw a hissy fit when he didn't get games.
Long is a good servant, we know what we're getting when this and the next season will have huge financial complications due to Covid.

Re: 4 contract extensions
I'd say he'll be on far more than 15k a week. Apart from the backup keepers and the kids none of our first team squad will still be on that sort of money.Tribesmen wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 11:42 amLook i have always liked Kevin as he steps in when called upon and does a good job for the team .

Re: 4 contract extensions
A lot of what happens at a football club takes place on the training ground where the manager and staff work out the best moves, attack and defence, against upcoming opposition. I am sure Keven Long plays a crucial role in that process even when not playing in the first team, and is well-paid with that in mind. He has also served us well enough when called upon to cover at different times.

Re: 4 contract extensions
He was thought to be on around £25k pw on his last deal, which was the bottom tier of 1st team squad wages - regular member of the matchday squad, 5 - 10 appearances most years (hefty share of which can be cup appearances, though that has changed recently with injuries). As a stop gap he is useful, much less so over a run of games. He remains a low cost fringe player who is actually very good for the morale of the players by the accounts I have seen
Re: 4 contract extensions
We have to have a reserve centre half. If Long wasn't there, we would either have to have someone else willing to sit on the bench for years who almost certainly would not be as good as long; or we would have to have a succession of people who come along expecting to force their way into the team, failing, and moving on disgruntled after a couple of years (or sooner, in Gibson's case).
I don't know what proportion of the games Mee, Keane and Tarkowski have played between them in the last 7 years since Mee replaced Duff at centre half. It's a lot. If Long hadn't been here we would have needed another Long or else a string of other centre halves to take his place to do the same job.
I agree he's a better fourth choice than third choice, but we do need a fourth choice.
