Up to a few years ago the Deerplay inn used to have a sheepdog trial every Boxing Day -- more of a social event than anything really competitive. It wasn't unknown for a set of sheep and sheepdogs to find their way into the pub where competition continued regardless! Not quite Bacup, but well on the way there. There also used to be a sheepdog club down the valley> Every year the owners gathered for an annual feed -- it was known locally as the Dog's Dinner!

The landlord then was Jimmy Cropper. Jimmy now lives in the farm 100 yds away and is a keen sheep dog trailist. One of Jimmys former wifes won one man and his dog the TV Programme
