With a significant number of first team regulars injured or undergoing treatment and battling to get back into the team in the fight against rrelegation Dyche resorts to a group of young lads who are brought in to help out in the FA Cup within a frameworks of more experienced players.

I'm not sure that many of those youngsters acquitted themselves that well tonight with the exception of the goalkeeper but surely with such a threadbare squad which has had no significant investment for two years, a result against Palace is far more crucial.

But this is all down to our increasing dependence on aging players. Over the last 5 seasons have we signed more than one player under 30 who could be seen as a first team starter?

The manager knows that the one single priority for this season is not getting relegated, and he has made his decisions on that basis. We were never going to win the cup, and if leaving out most of the first team gives us any advantage at all for the upcoming Premier League games, then that is justifiable in terms of the one single priority for this season.
