Best “ past their prime “ signings

Post by karatekid » Tue Feb 09, 2021 9:28 pm

Teddy Sherringham joined Man Utd aged 31 and won 3 premier league titles , 1 FA cup ,1 champions league, 1 intercontinental cup , 1 charity shield and scored 31 goals in 3 seasons . Not bad for an old timer striker.

At the time of JB signing I was not impressed but how he proved me wrong. Probably my favourite claret since Dean Marney.

Ibrahimović did pretty well when he went to Man United, a lot thought it might be a step too far at his age.

For us Barton and Grezza stand out.

Graham Alexander. Massively underwhelmed when we signed him, thought he was past it, but what a player he turned out to be.

Barton to a lesser extent because I knew he had the quality, it was just a case of keeping the temperament under control which Dyche did with aplomb.

As per the others, Grezza and Barton were outstanding and not over a handful of appearances.

How good was Barton despite his reputation?

Alexander was PNE and always a thorn in our side. He was even better when he signed for us. Is there a better penalty conversion rate in the modern era ?

This name was mentioned out of context earlier in the thread, but he's a player we've never replaced.

Noble had been plying his trade in Divisions 2 & 3 before stepping back up to the top flight.

Newton had already been mentioned.

I'm not so sure that Defour was past his best, I think it might have been a case that his midfield compatriots had up the ante. De Bruyne?
Besides, he was never quite a regular for Belgium.

Surely past their prime signings have to be into their 30s so Steven Defour can't be a shout as good as he was

Maybe a debatable one: Andy Payton.

Was 30ish when he signed for us and had been regularly playing at a higher level so could be argued he was past his best.

He looked to be on his prime to me though.

You also need to remember that the likes of Hutchison were playing in Division 3.

I agree with Keith Newton. One might add Tony Waiters from just before that era.

But surely it must be Graham Alexander. Finished really as a full back but brought in at the age of 36 by Steve Cotterill to play in midfield. Unfortunately because of injuries he didn't get much of a chance as SC was forced to use him as a defender. When he was played in midfield he proved to be a real gem and managed to up his game in the Premier League (as did most of Owen Coyle's old soldiers like Caldwell and Carlisle). I agree they weren't up to the task but it was an amazing effort and he got his only season in the sun at nearly the end of a marvellous career.
