How are you?

Post by LoveCurryPies » Wed Feb 24, 2021 6:40 pm

I was shocked last night by a video of a friend saying he wanted to end his life. It really hit me hard.

Guy is normally a strong out-going charismatic positive person. But not being able to work because of lockdown has absolutely destroyed him.

He’s taken himself to hospital and hoping to get psychiatric help. But it got me thinking. There must be many, many people suffering as well.

So, how well are you?

Terrible situation, LCP. Thank goodness he had the sense to take himself to a safe place and good luck to him.
There was a good thread started a while back on this subject but I’ll never find it now. If anybody can remember it’s title they might care to share it in here.

I’ve been much better this year, than I was towards the back end of last year when I was drinking every night.
I’ve only drank 3 times this year and as daft as it sounds I’ve actually felt more anxious about hearing lockdown will be coming to an end, I think half of me refuses to get excited about it because 9 times of 10 what the government have said hasn’t happened, the other half of me is anxious about what normal will be and how the economy will recover so I’ve not been sleeping great again. Ordered lots of new books to keep my mind busy in an evening.

Luckily I had a grandson born before lockdown,so he's been a godsend for us as we have been looking after him as his parents are working from home. Been a joy to behold in these sad times.

I’m feeling quite bipolar about things. Some days I’m flying and everything is fine and dandy. Then feel quite suicidal the next. It is the mental health effects of the current situation.

Anyway, thanks for asking LCP, I hope you are well and I hope your friend gets the help they need

Struggling tbh

But feeling ashamed to admit it.

I’ve seen a few post from people on Facebook/Twitter etc and think wow you are so brave to admit it in a public setting but I couldn’t do that as I would feel ashamed

Don’t know anyone here so I feels easier to admit that I’m not ok

Absolutely don’t. Talking is the best medicine. There are good folk on here and you’ll get nothing but positivity.

Edit:BTW. I hope this has nothing to do with your Sheridan Smith/alcohol tweet? :D

Today has been a very unusual day for me in terms of mental health. I'm normally quite optimistic, happy and with little to trouble me apart from my own egotistical issues. My base needs are always met. Food, house, warmth, home comforts, electronics, gadgets etc.

Today, however, has just been a very... well, I can only describe it as the inability to feel anything at all. Like I'm staring at a blank canvas with no motivation to paint. My thoughts have been very scattered, thinking of a million different things. Been on two lengthy walks to try and clear my head, without such luck.

Even with a "light at the end of the tunnel" with Covid, it still doesn't feel real, it feels like I'm waiting for the next slip up, the next "bad thing", the next lockdown.

I struggle a lot with loneliness. I flit between wanting to settle down with a woman to wanting to be free and single and without anything to tie me down to anywhere. I want to both be settled and explore. It's a strange, internal conflict.

I hope everyone else is feeling ok.

Hope your mate is OK long term.

Personally I'm lucky that I've been able to work throughout this pandemic in one way or another.
I've come to terms with the death of my dad in Jan 2020.

If I'd been sat at home then I don't think I'd be in a good place.

I was on antidepressants for a large chunk of the last 12 mths after dad died but I've come off them now.

Dad dying and stuff that's gone on this last 12 months has helped me realised some things that I needed to do.

You are among friends, even if you don't know anyone on here.
To be honest, I'm not sure how anyone can be 100% comfortable with their mental health given the circumstances we find ourselves in.
Try to stay strong and do the things that make you feel positive (if you can).
All the best to you.

You’ve already made the first step & that’s important, as good as some people on here are in terms of wisdom & experience you can’t substitute professional help & if you continue to feel low that would be my first port of call, good luck anyhow going forwards.

Very well and thanks for asking.
Had my 1st jab last Friday and despite a slight temperature overnight have had no side effects.
Saturday was hard with the WBA game but no ill effects.
Painted the bathroom ceiling this morning and went for a walk over Helsby Hill this afternoon with my good lady wife.
Currently listening to Diana Ross on Alexa shuffle whilst enjoying a glass of vino.
Life's OK.

I’ve got to admit I am struggling a bit now for several reasons. I am five years from retirement and due to not working at present and living in a smallish flat with my wife everything seems bloody pointless and I feel like I no longer have a purpose in life. I had a really bad bout of Covid six weeks ago which made me really poorly. I was feeling down before I got it and presume I contracted it on one of the rare days I actually had some work. Prior to the Covid I did make the best of a bad job and enjoyed a few alcoholic beverages at weekends. Sadly as my sense of taste and smell is still non existent I can’t even have a bloody beer! I miss my 3 grown up children who live 20 miles away as we used to socialise quite regularly. I have had to reschedule a Tenerife holiday for the whole family twice so far which was booked before Covid outbreak to celebrate my 60th birthday last year. I will just request a refund now as booking holidays is currently a bit of a lottery. Watching football isn’t enjoyable, and not just because of some of our poor performances. I am just fed up of watching games with no crowds and the advertising all over empty seats. It was ok at first but is now getting tedious. My wife is coping a lot better than me as she likes watching all of the mind numbing day time tv and she lost her job a few months before Covid hit so she is used to being home all day.
I do get out on days when the weather is ok for fairly long walks, this helps a little but it would be nice if I could sit down for a coffee en route.
On the plus side I beat Covid and am still alive and not depressed just a bit down. When I do feel down I often think about people who are lonely and on their own and those who may not be in the best of health and cannot have proper contact with their usual circle of friends and family and support networks. It must be so hard for them, a lot harder than what I am going through. For that I should be thankful. Best wishes to all fellow clarets in coping during these difficult times and I hope you all come through this not too badly scarred. UTC

Been up and down and also another feeling a bit apprehensive about getting back to normal.I fear I have lost my business having not worked in it since last March luckily in August my sister in law got me a part time job doing a bit of cleaning and labouring I have not worked in such an environment for 30 years and hated it for the first few weeks being so far removed from what I normally do.But gradually I have got to know quite a few of the lads and plenty of them Clarets so given me a bit social aspect away from the madness

Your story sounds almost identical to my father, he luckily hasn’t had Covid though as he’d struggle with his health.

He was eventually made redundant and got an ok redundancy pay off, I still don’t think he’s ready for retirement and the thought of no income scares him, although he could manage I’m sure, he enjoys his exotic holidays.

Fingers crossed we all pull through to summer when everyone’s smiles will be back! Keep at it mate.

I’ve got to admit that in the lead up to Christmas I was beginning to understand how the lockdown could affect people’s mental health. Then we had a real upset in my family and I had to deal with it and we still are.
Come February and I’ve got a tough case of COVID and it has really made me stop and think - I haven’t been fit to do anything but think! Now my mindset has changed again and out of the fear of kicking the bucket I’ve come to recognise what I do have around me and focus on that rather than the sh*t that is going on.
So, how am I - the answer varies daily, but I get on with it the best I can and hope things turn out good.
