What am I missing?
I’d love to know what exactly people take away from the experience of winding people up/ fishing
/ making stuff up.
Tell me about how satisfied it make you feel when someone reacts .

Done well it is funny and nobody gets hurt.
Nowadays it is usually just offensive and somebody does get hurt, mentally. The pain nobody sees.

Re: What am I missing?
It all depends on the subject of the wind up and the folk you're aiming it at. It can be absolutely hilarious.
The ones who do it (try) on a daily/weekly basis on here, are absolute sad cases and utter bores.

Re: What am I missing?
Hopefully they will stop come the 8th March when all the spotty kids leave their bedrooms and go back to school
If it doesn't, then there are some sad adults who are yet to learn basic social skills, it which case its a good job places like this exist to let them play out their childish pranks, because if they tried the same thing outside, in the real world they wouldn't last long before someone put them on their backside.

It’s all about the reactions. They are hilarious when someone gets seething at a bit of fun. It’s like the chase is better than the catch type scenario.
Grown men actually getting angry because someone doesn’t rate their favourite manager or player I mean come on who is the child.

While I'm perusing the messageboard in the morning, I might see a topic or an angry comment from a particular user, so I'll post something provocative, shut the laptop lid and then revisit the thread later in the day to admire the devastation I might've caused.

Re: What am I missing?
The OP asks a good question. Just generally I don't get the urge to "wind up" other people. Seems like a particularly malicious and pea-brained amusement to me.
NB : If this post winds up the wind up merchants I emphasise that it's my genuine opinion !

Re: What am I missing?
Like most things, those that can't do it, or fall for it regularly are the ones that get most upset about it.
I've logged on sometimes a few hours after a little tongue in cheek, and had 8 notifications/quotes, I can only imagine the amount of froth it caused.
I'd not like to know of their reactions on an actual serious matter.
Not sure which is more rewarding, catching the ones that rarely get caught, or getting the same person/people time and time again.
I think some people's user name is like a red rag to a bull, and they dont even need to try, they jump in the net with out any bait.

I genuinely think sometimes people aren’t intending to do that but it looks that way, you’ve sometimes got certain posters with extreme conflicting views & it could be misconstrued that fishing expeditions are at play when people might be deadly serious but just can’t agree. The mainstream appear to gang up when opposing viewpoints are challenged, but that’s my opinion doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong.Burnleyareback2 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 11:07 pmI’d love to know what exactly people take away from the experience of winding people up/ fishing

I don't think it's any different to other public messageboards. People fishing, winding people up and posting things about others they'd be too frigtened to say to their faces.

Unfortunately, you have made several claims in the past few days that were wrong and proved to be so. Nobody ganging up, just walking you through an issue you found too complex to cope with.
It happens, I guess.
What I don't understand is the wind up merchants actually bragging about it - as if the mods haven't enough to worry about !
I you were on, say, the Rovers board fair enough but on here ? Why would you ?

Nobody's falling out, kidster and there's certainly no hassle - you're welcome to quote me all you like - so no need for any thanks.
I assume you understand the point I'm making : of course, some points made will be a matter of opinion. Problem is some of the ones you made were completely wrong, untrue, falsehoods, lies or mistakes. You can't expect people not to point that out. Nicely, of course, and I think, in spite of your serious errors of judgement, you emerged relatively unscathed. Nobody laughed at you.
Re: What am I missing?
I've no problem with people having differing opinions, that's normal life
What I find unacceptable, especially when there have been enough threads on here about people struggling with their mental health, is people admitting they come on to purposely tell lies, and wind people up, and find it funny, fully unaware how that might affect the people they are aiming their so called fun at.

Cheers, tim....
Me being banned I mean.
Not forgetting my two year stint on Upthe Trotters or whatever they called themselves. I got banned very early from the Rovers boards round about the time one of their lads died from, incredibly, heading a dustbin at Stoke, I think it was. Probably deservedly so looking back.

Incredibly so. There were mixed messages, people weren't sure whether he and his mates were messing about on the concourse or someone chucked it at him as a joke. Either way, feelings were running high and understandably so.

Re: What am I missing?
Intention is very difficult to convey in written form especially with brevity or a poor command of actual English.
In real life, yes it can be brilliant having a bit of fun with a wind up as more than one can share the joke and everything gets resolved later normally with a good laugh.
On a message board though? Not for me, it's impersonal and often results in insults rather than banter.

You have hit the nail on the head there Jakub. The mainstream frequent posters do often indeed gang up on posters when they may express views not compatible with theirs. And some of them do it in a subtle way which drags the offending poster in and before they know it the offending poster is then in the middle of an argument they will struggle to win. They let their guard down, express their frustration and then end up getting banned from the board for a period of time.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 1:56 pmI genuinely think sometimes people aren’t intending to do that but it looks that way, you’ve sometimes got certain posters with extreme conflicting views & it could be misconstrued that fishing expeditions are at play when people might be deadly serious but just can’t agree. If statistics are so important nobody as yet to explain why for years & years before statistics were used in football heavily or lightly or not at all how football ever continued to what we know today, yes it’s evolved but statistics weren’t important then why are there important now, if somebody can explain why the statistics are so important to the extent that football would stop without them fair enough, but also it’s helpful to also explain why the continuation years ago happened in the absence without any major problems. My argument I’ve maintained is that football would still continue without statistics as it happily did years ago. I’m still waiting....Jamesy wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 7:47 amYou have hit the nail on the head there Jakub. Re: What am I missing?
According to Jakub.........and I quote.
"If statistics are so important nobody as yet to explain why for years & years before statistics were used in football heavily or lightly or not at all how football ever continued to what we know today, yes it’s evolved but statistics weren’t important then why are there important now, if somebody can explain why the statistics are so important to the extent that football would stop without them fair enough, but also it’s helpful to also explain why the continuation years ago happened in the absence without any major problems. Well, this is an interesting change of tack. A little desperate but interesting nonetheless.
Nobody has argued that football or cycling, skiing, swimming, distance running - or any sport that uses statistics to enhance performance for that matter - would stop without them. That would be stupid.
You're looking for an argument that isn't there. Of course, all these sports have been played for years without detailed statistics but there is absulutely no doubt they are now widely used by those in the know - coaches and athletes - to understand and enhance performance. To improve.
You might not be able to understand this most simple of concepts, that's fine and again, nobody's laughing at you - openly.

Re: What am I missing?
On my banned list. It’s just a relentless and futile attempt at being contrary. Like Monty Python from 1972.
Re: What am I missing?
Like I said, if you cannot spot some tongue in cheek then that's your own fault.
Dont rise to it, and if you've any inclination someone might be pulling your leg or having a bit of a joke and you dont want to get caught up in it, dont comment, quote or take part.
Theres nothing easier than scrolling past something you dont want to read, believe or want to answer/discuss
Lots of grown ups like banter, quick wit, jokes or pulling your leg, just like some adults like computer games, fantasy football, cartoons or sticker albums.
Life would be boring if we were all the same, dont be such a grump.... oh wait ( joke )
