edited after some reflection time. We played OK but Spurs hit us with those long balls over the top as we tried to be more expansive in our style like many have been calling for over the last few months. It has to be remembered that every one of those Spurs attackers (if not all their outfield players) would be an instant first choice if they were at Burnley

Pope 8 - two or three very good saves
Lowton 7 - didn’t look out of place
Tarkowski 5 - not convincing when they ran at him, got a lot to do to justify playing for a Champions League team
Mee 6 - resilient but too slow to stop Spurs today
Taylor 6 - played Bale onside for the first, should never be behind your CN
Brownhill 5 - probably the most incapable of competing at this level
Cork 6 - plugged away but they kept invading his space and he got outnumbered
Westwood 7 - always looking for the forward pass
McNeil 6 - a little harsh, but that left foot has to be compared to Bale. That’s the benchmark. Way, way short of Bale currently but so many are.
Rodriguez 5 - no joy
Vydra 6 - his energy and pace got him some openings but his frustration was clear, he is just a smidgeon short at this level

A far better performance than West Brom and if we had played like that against West Brom we win the game.

The defence though was a little suspect, and we were hurt by the way Kane, Bale, Son and Moura drop deep, turn, and run at the defence. Our wingers didn’t offer enough protection and our framework looked a bit wobbly, it made for an open game, but that isn’t what we need at Spurs.

But wasn’t Bale magnificent? Dropping so deep he was like a quarterback, receiving balls on the edge of his own box and firing off long passes with unerring accuracy. McNeil could learn so much from him today, everything with purpose, nothing wasted. Dominating the game, which when you have world class players around you too, can win major titles which of course Bale has done.

Of course in my ratings I'm not suggesting McNeil can be the biggest transfer fee in the world like Bale, but he should always aim for perfection, and in all likelihood he will encounter excellence along the way.

If only McNeil got a rating for every time his name was misspelled on here!
