Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
That should be him finished in the sport imo.

His explanation in the first link seems plausible enough, until you see the photo in the second link.

Exactly, he isn’t just gesturing to somebody because he is on the phone.

It's not good is it. I was hoping it was photo shopped as some had claimed.
He's obviously fell out with someone close enough to him to take the photo and get it published.

He quite likes that gesture,he uses it as a sign of triumph..was he glad the horse was dead?
Obnoxious man who obviously dosent care for his livestock
Here he is with same two fingered salute as when hes sat on his dead horse

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
It's not a pet, and he doesn't own it. He's unlikely to be too emotional about one of many horses which he is temporarily looking after. It's a bad taste photo, but there are professions where death of animals is a way of life, and this is one of them.

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
Disgusting and extremely sad. Hope his horses are banned from running at Cheltenham
Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
I read the BBC article this morning and could just about believe the reason given. Seeing the picture though, it’s obvious that he’s doing his utmost to invent a plausible excuse.
That could easily be interpreted as someone pleased to have been proven right in saying that the horse wasn’t up to it, having been run to death.
I don’t care if he’s immune to seeing dead horses because he works with them day in day out. He’s a trainer and his priority should be the welfare of the animals ahead of everything else, including winning races.
Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
Like I said - bad taste. To him, the death of a horse (this particular horse anyway) was not a tragedy, any more than it is when a farmer loses a sheep. It's a financial loss, but not something to mourn. You might as well ask a chef to mourn over a leg of lamb.
Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
He’s a trainer of animals. He’s not in the business of breeding animals for slaughter. Comparing the two is ridiculous.

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
His reaction to a death of an animal should be in no way different to anyone else who has any level of care towards them. He should be judged purely on the very odd and disrespectful act of sitting on a dead horse.

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
FWIW I think he should have his license suspended for the remainder of this year and be reviewed from there. It probably won't happen because money talks. But this distasteful act brings into focus horse welfare perceptions to question and also brings racing into disrepute as a whole at a time when the powers that be are trying to improve the image of the product

He trains the horses not own them, why would you punish someone who owns a horse by banning them ?

What he did was horrendous but cannot agree with the pile on “cancel culture “ he is getting.
He should get a fine/few months ban at most.
We have lost the ability to forgive, Mick Quinn the former footballer got banned for 3 years around the turn of the century after the authorities found 3 of his horses to be in a poor condition after being left outside, yet he was forgiven and he now has horses that he trains

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
It is the modern way for the punishment to know no bounds, heavily influenced by the media.
The image shows a snapshot in time, and most likely does not give the whole story.
People can’t look at anything objectively anymore, evidence doesn’t seem to matter.

The images on those links are not very nice, but its hardly the crime of the century.
As with most things in modern life, he has probably made a mistake by holding up his hand and apologising. The offended by everything generation no longer accept that token and will want every single pound of flesh, along with some sort of compensation for their hurt feelings

From an animal rights perspective is sitting on a dead horse better than sitting on a live one?

Re: Gordon Elliott Race Horse Trainer
It is hard to make comparisons in relation to digressions as to how to ensure that the punishment fits the crime. For me there is a difference between doing something as a joke and crossing the line to something that should never be done.
When you work with animals this sort of stuff should not happen and you shouldn’t work with the animals again if they do. For me it’s as simple as that. If I worked in a bank and stole a tenner from the till I would expect to be sacked and never get a job in a bank again.
For all those saying he shouldn’t be hung out to dry for this I understand the sentiment but there are things (like this) that should not happen, joke or not. I don’t think he should work in the industry any more because it is not acceptable.
You only have to watch Mick Fitzgerald yesterday to understand what proper racing people think of this...an absolute disgrace

That’s a brilliant point.
Not only that, but all those with a strong view of what he’s done, will most likely have an animal on their plate tonight.
