That's where the question of assessing what the forward was going to do, comes in. If Pope had stayed on his line, he would have probably saved it, assuming that the forward took a first time volley. But when a forward is advancing towards goal, do you want Pope to stay on his line as a matter of course, leaving him well and truly up the spout if the forward takes a touch?Rileybobs wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:15 amIt’s a mistake by Pope, not sure how it can be claimed otherwise. It’s also a mistake by Mee. It’s also a very very good finish. All three factors played a part in the goal.
FWIW I think Pope has been given more responsibility of late to play the sweeper keeper role and mop up behind Mee and Tarks. It must be said that he’s done it really well. On this occasion however he misjudged the ball over the top and got his angles wrong. Had he stayed on his line there’s every chance he would have saved it. It’s no biggy, we knew he wasn’t god despite him making very few errors.

Re: Leicester's goal
A good goal no doubt, but when a keeper loses the frame of the goal positional wise they are always in trouble. It's a simple and a forgivable error where Pope watches the flight of the ball (and calls for it) but finds himself a yard beyond the far post.
Both pundits in the Sky studio (both strikers) said they would have loved to see the keeper coming for that type of ball

Stop trolling, even if he was in the perfect position, he wouldn't have saved it.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Wed Mar 03, 2021 8:19 pmPope got his positioning badly wrong and barely covered any of the goal. I think he just lost his bearings as he tried to decide whether to stay or come out
Well taken goal from the striker but poor keeping. Still all keepers make mistakes and thankfully with Pope its a very rare exception

Re: Leicester's goal
Anticipation I think is the key word I’d use but unfortunately was sorely missing despite the brilliance of the finish, I don’t think it’s productive to bash him over this or any other player, all in all it’s a good performance & a decent point against a good Leicester side.dsr wrote: ↑Wed Mar 03, 2021 11:22 pmEven if Pope had been in the right place (a yard or so to his left) the ball would still have gone in, unless it happened to hit his foot.
Remember Pope didn't know that the man was going to hit it first time. if he had known that, he would have played it differently.

Interestingly none of the pundits last night blamed Pope and it was the same on MOTD. A one off piece of brilliance by the striker that caught everybody out. Fair play to him.

Re: Leicester's goal
If say Vydra scored their goal last night nobody would have focused on Schmeichel and blamed him for the goal it would have been how well he took it. Likewise had Vardy scored the goal we did Mee/Tarks would have been hammered rather than saying how well Vardy took the goal.
Re: Leicester's goal
After watching Dyche's interview on BBC he states the goal was "poor", so I can only assume his technique for volleying over the shoulder was better

Re: Leicester's goal
I think Dyche was referring to the defensive cover. Bale’s first on Sunday and this goal, although different in their finishes, were similar in the build up with the defence dragged out of position and the runner coming from the same direction and beating the offside trap. Training ground stuff - coaches have identified a weakness and are exploiting the space behind the back four.
All teams are now using the long ball over the defence much more against us for their forwards to run onto.

If pope stays he prob parrys it away as it would of been down his throat. Thats not to say it was a mistake though. Pope is too good of a box commanding keeper to stay put when the ball is put over his defenders head like that. He is out of position when the volley is hit but thats only because he was on his way out.
Top volley.
Re: Leicester's goal
I'm not sure too much blame can be attached to Pope. Our defence was playing a pretty high line, which meant we were a bit vulnerable to the ball over the top for Vardy to run on to, and Pope had to be off his line to counter that. About five minutes after their goal there was another Leicester attack in which the ball was played over the top for Vardy, but because Pope was in the middle of the penalty box to start with he was able to advance and kick it clear,

Re: Leicester's goal
Our defenders switched off.
It is a goalkeeping error but only because Iheanacho volleys the ball, had he taken a touch Pope would have been very well placed to make a block.

I just wish the Leicester scorer would have had Tarkowski’s boots on and it wouldn’t have mattered what position Pope took up
