The centenary of our 1st ever title is looming

Post by tiger76 » Tue Mar 09, 2021 10:45 pm

Does anybody know if the club have anything planned to mark this anniversary, obviously any commemorations would have to take place on-line mainly, but you'd have thought such a landmark day should be remembered.

23 April was the day we clinched the title with a 1-1 draw at Everton, and bizarrely we didn't win any of our last 6 games yet still easily won the title, of course that was principally due to our then record 30 game unbeaten run, after losing the opening 3 games of the campaign, imagine if this MB had existed then

I asked the club the same question. The club had planned a display at Towneley I understand but its been postponed because of the virus.

I've been working on a film of Tommy Boyle and part 2 will cover the League championship in 1920-21. That part is almost complete and I hope to have it done by the end of April to coincide with the centenary. The film will be in two parts. Part 1 is done and goes from Tommy's Barnsley days the 1910 and 1914 Cup Finals up to the start of WW1. Part 2 takes it up to Tommy's death in 1940. Once both parts are done I'll post links to both films on YouTube on here.

Somebody on Twitter asked Pace this question. His answer was "watch this space".

Living in Sheffield, I visited Tommy's grave. In a very small, well hidden graveyard. It was very poignant a d moving, I have to say. The book about him equally so, and well worth a read.

I can’t imagine there would be many turn up, it doesn’t really mean a great deal to me, I appreciate it might to some though, just not as many as they perhaps think.

Had many a conversation with Dad regarding Bob Kelly. He always maintained that Kelly and Jimmy Mac were the two most naturally gifted players ever to play for Burnley. Just imagine a side including Kelly with Tommy Boyle behind him at centre-half.

The pair only missed a handful of games in that momentous 1920/21 season with Kelly weighing in with 20 goals.

I think if the time-machine could bring those young men forward a hundred years, they'd love this .... we've survived the war, won the title and we're being treated to this great American food and soft drinks. As for the cheerleaders, I believe both George Halley and Jerry Dawson had an eye for a well turned ankle !! 8-)

It's such a shame this has clashed with this particular year.

There would have been weekly articles on here but I couldn't get to the library unfortunately to gather the reports etc.

The Towneley exhibition for the centenary of the 1914 final was terrific and I knew there were plans for similar for this.

Game 30. Bolton Wanderers 1, Burnley 1.
The Burnley News 9th March 1921reported on Burnley's game at Bolton which ended in a 1-1 draw, The Clarets 30th game of the season and their 27th match unbeaten. 54,809 attendance. Joe Anderson put Burnley ahead on six minutes only for Smith to equalise for Bolton.
Plenty of Burnley fans at the game, three special trains taking fans to Burnden Park, though some fans were unhappy (see Dissappointed's letter below).
The match left Burnley six points clear at the top of the table with 12 matches to go.
Burnley were: Dawson, Smelt, Jones, Basnett, Boyle and Watson, Nesbitt Kelly, Anderson, Cross and Weaver.

The Lancashire and Yorkshire was the most intensively operated network of any of the pre-grouping companies and the passenger and goods timetables may have dictated the timing of these football specials. Certainly not much drinking time in Notlob on this occasion.

GAME 31: Burnley 1, Arsenal 0.
The Clarets 28th game unbeaten in front of 30,126 at Turf Moor saw Burnley beat a strong Arsenal side by a single goal scored by a Billy Watson penalty. The Clarets were without Bob Kelly away on England duty, Jimmy Lindsay deputising.
The game itself was strewn with fouls and Burnley saw the game out 1-0 thanks to a stout defence and Jerry Dawsons great form.
The Clarets go 8 points clear with 11 matches left.
15th straight consecutive home win of the season.
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Burnley were: Dawson, Smelt and Jones, Basnett, Boyle and Watson, Nesbitt, Lindsay, Anderson, Cross and Weaver.

" Burnley lucky to beat Arsenal " , London based Fleet Street bias even 100 years ago ....

Kelly was not only before time but before my dad’s too. My granddad always insisted he was better than Jimmy Mac so he must have been some player. Incredibly he played league football until he was 43.

We could all play a part, in our own way. Commemorating winning our first Div 1 Championship, by all wearing Claret and Blue shirts for the day. Even hanging Burnley banners and flags where possible.
