Burnley v Chelsea - March 1961
The day we played 10 reserves, got fined but drew 4-4 against Chelsea.
My piece on it

But I've just been sent a link to this footage, not sure it's been on here before.

Went to this game with my dad. We were stood high up in that area between the Longside and Beehole End. As you say, what a game and what a performance from the team. Also, perhaps my first real sighting of a player to become our nemesis over the next few years, Jimmy Greaves. Disappointing in the end but great memories of a wonderful era.

Great footage, that YouTube account has some fabulous stuff. Don't know where he gets it from as most of it is stuff I've never seen anywhere else.

I was in the cricketfield end with my dad and thought that our reserves did really well.
It was a great time to be a Burnley fan, with the league title giving us that chance to play in Europe and for my first ever trips abroad!
How quickly the ball came back into play once it was in the keeper's possession and it rarely went back to him in the same phase, unlike today when a keeper will pass the ball out, his back four/midfiled complete another 20 passes, without ever getting our of their own half, before passing it back to the keeper who often starts the whole process again.
Leeds on Monday had 65% possession and their fans think that they were unlucky to lose at West Ham because they had 17 shots at goal and the Hammers only had 16 ----they need reminding that, until IFAB decide to take possession into account, it is still goals that matter.

Wonderful! My first ever Clarets game aged 6 years old. Went with my Dad. Caught the ten past one Ribble from Littleborough and was sat in our Wing Stand seats by 2pm. The seats cost 7 shillings for an adult and 3/6 for a child. The princely sum of 53p in today's money. Where have those 60 years gone?

We must have been stood pretty close. What a small world and what a great time to a 13 year old watching The Champions in action. Seem to remember we got hefty fine for playing a weak team. Yea the team was so weak we scored 4 against Chelsea !!Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 11:12 amWent to this game with my dad. Like Silkyskills1, I was in the corner between Bee Hole and Longside, around half way up I think we used to go. Would have been with my dad and granddad.

Our goal scorers were Bomber Harris who got the first and third and Andy Lochhead who scored the other 2. Our ‘reserve team ‘ that day was Furnell D Smith Marshall Walker Cummings Scott Meredith Lawson Lochhead Fenton Harris.

I was on that one too. Hadn't quite graduated to the cricket-field end but was about 2/3rds the way back on the longside about a quarter the way in from the Bee-Hole end. I was with 2/3 mates of about the same age but can only clearly recollect the identity of one of them. It was very exciting giving them such a good game with so many first XI missing; great effort and top entertainment.
Chelsea were a mid-table team that year (scored a lot/let a lot in) with Greaves scoring 41 goals in the league! Greavesie left at the end of that season (for Italy) and Chelsea went downhill and got relegated soon after. I also see that during that season Greaves became the youngest player (@21) to get to 100 career league goals & maybe still holds that record (though it probably doesn't count now as it was pre-Premier League ).

If there is a goal scoring record of any type in this country then it's a pretty safe bet that Jimmy Greaves will be involved. Incredible goalscorer and a gentleman to go with it.
