VAR & When a Decision Can Be Overturned

Post by bf2k » Wed Mar 17, 2021 12:32 pm

Can one of our resident referees explain why Dermot Gallagher says in one statement that the Lacazette penalty couldn't be "re-refereed" but yet the Holgate handball could have been (and how he sees Holgate's arm is trapped I've no idea)?

I also don't understand the reasoning for the second yellow for Lamela. How are you supposed to shield the ball? Surely catching a man in the throat is accidental when you are trying to use your arms to shield the ball.

When you see your opponent coming, put your arms up and then deliberately swing them into your opponent's throat - that's attempted GBH

Based on what the on field ref has seen. Gallagher said that Oliver will have told the VAR official what he’d seen and therefore couldn’t ask him to look again. I get more and more confused each week.

Must say that I really don't understand the statement that VAR 'can't re-referee the situation' ??? That seems to be implying that once a ref has made a decision then it can't be overturned. Surely that's happened many times?

It's no use trying to make sense of any of it. They move the goalposts on a weekly basis, to justify, or try to justify, every crap decision.
What's a given this week, will be ruled out next. VAR isn't the problem, but the idiots who are using it, same as it ever was.
We don't need to get rid of VAR, just get rid of the idiots.

Don't worry because they will be introducing automated offside calls, using artificial intelligence, before the end of 2022. Things are well under way for FIFA to bring this in. They say that this will mean that an AR can flag for an incident instead of having to wait ---what a novel idea ---meanwhile in the rest of the non-elite football world the ARs and club linesman will also be able to continue as he always has done and flag for an offside when he thinks that there is an offside.

Im still of the opinion that var needs scrapping along with the current offside law. If your off side you're off side. The diving cheats need dealing with as well.

Tell me about it. I thought VAR was about clear & obvious mistakes?

I'd only recently seen the Phil Foden incident... blatent penalty, compared to other decisions I've seen, it was a clear and obvious error and nothing was done.

I can honestly say I don't know the rules of football now, I have no idea how the officials come to the conclusions. This is why the Stockley Park audio needs to be broadcast.

I go the other way. Scrap offside and open up the game. This would show who makes great runs and who can defend. No grey areas.

So did I. But apparently not if they're made by the ref, as their decisions can't be re-refereed/overturned! Make what you will of that nonsense!

The game will turn into defenders just lumping the ball to big target men hanging around in the 18 yard box, so pretty much the same as the way Burnley play anyway.
