He said he's decided to call time on his role but I suspect there was no new contract on the way

Good idea.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:13 amGive it Frank Lampard. He seems to like working with the young players.
Whoever gets the gig they can't possibly be worse than Boothroyd the guy was clueless, for instance when has Dwight ever been a full back, and England hardly managed a shot on goal in the Switzerland and Portugal games, yes they markedly improved in the Croatia match, but that was down to necessity more than tactics.
Not a bad idea-it also lets him back in to management without losing any credibilityQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:13 amGive it Frank Lampard. He seems to like working with the young players.
True but they're probably already employed, hence why the u21's are left with the dregs of management such as Boothroyd.
Well. People can skate Southgate. But he has done far better than managers who did have success as a manager. Such as Sven. Capello. Hodgson. Et al.maccclaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 7:36 pmDoesn’t seem to be a necessary qualification to manage the big boys team.
It’s a nice thought. But theirs absolutely zero chance of that. It is though a good opportunity for a young, ambitious manager who the young players could relate to and respect. That would have been lampard a few years back but there is no chance he would go from Chelsea to the under 21s.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 7:41 pmTrue but they're probably already employed, hence why the u21's are left with the dregs of management such as Boothroyd.
It will be interesting how far the FA cast their net for his replacement that's for sure.
If they are truly ambitious they'd be on the phone to Howe, Lampard or Wilder but given the FA'S track record I wouldn't bank on it.
Yes, you're right.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:28 pmWell. People can skate Southgate. But he has done far better than managers who did have success as a manager. Such as Sven. Capello. Hodgson. Et al.
And it’s not like Joachim Lowe had any pedigree before Germany.
Managing internationally is a totally different kettle of fish.
Southgate can’t win. People don’t want him to succeed. If they don’t it’s his fault. If they do it’s in spite of him.
As it happens he’s building a great young exciting side.
Only against half decent teams.
I can't say I'm particularly excited.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:28 pm

It would be a lot more exciting if he didn't play two defensive midfielders against the likes of Albania.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:28 pmWell. People can skate Southgate. He isn't saying that thought, is he? He's arguing the point that they don't necessarily have to have had success or pedigree. It has backfired on England several times after appointing some of the best in the world at the time.
Oh please. He's bored and on the wind up.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 12:23 pmHe isn't saying that thought, is he? Really, who really cares about the U21 and has it much worth? It's club football where you earn your England place and it'll be that what keeps you there. Tournament experience benefit I hear you say? Yeah, really on a par with the world cup and euro champs. It's harder playing 3/4 games in a 10 day period in The Prem & European competitions flying everywhere than a few games in a comp with a few thousand people watching.
I guess the only benefit is it gives players a sense of the pressure of wearing The Three Lions badge but think of much more really.
I don't come on here for long enough to know what the state of people's minds are so I'll take your word for it. But lockdown seems to me to have finished so not sure what that's got to do with it.
Exactly that.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 12:23 pmHe isn't saying that thought, is he? He's arguing the point that they don't necessarily have to have had success or pedigree. It has backfired on England several times after appointing some of the best in the world at the time.

When was the last consistently exciting England side? Probably Sven who left fifteen years ago and even then we never got past a quarter finals.
Haha hilarious.
I agree with you CC and it is refreshing to see him try and mix things up and give people their chance. I'm scared though that he's trying a bit too much / a bit too hard to have a look at everyone, that he actually doesn't know his best squad and in the end will be a bit like the one day cricket side was for so many years in the past (thankfully not now); seem to have found good players, a good side, some good results and then at the last minute change coz a few other players started doing well. I just hope he doesn't get all tangled up and messy and the side loses identity and its plans. It's clearly the right way with so much football being played, just as the cricket are doing mixing it up. We've got a chance this summer being at home, need to have the nation on side. After Russia and all that brought it would be nice to have the fans onside really giving them the courage and support to go and at least get to the final.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 9:14 pmHaha hilarious.
Fwiw I regularly go to watch England. Domestically and reasonably frequently away too.
The England side now are better and more exciting than any of the teams of the last 15 plus years.
And southgates moulding a good attacking side.
It’s the same people criticising him for not selecting jack cork who criticise him for picking Kalvin Phillips.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:43 pmI agree with you CC and it is refreshing to see him try and mix things up and give people their chance.
