Matt Jay
Another rising star from Exeter in the Watkins mould maybe worth a bid.

Re: Matt Jay
Probably out of our reach
Re: Matt Jay
I've no idea if I'm honest. Don't know anything about him other than looking at his stats just now which show he's 25 and had one decent season by the looks of it.
But if he was a rising star in league two I'd see no reason why we would stand no chance - big difference between that and players in the PL or Championship widely reported to be being chased by bigger clubs than ours.

Re: Matt Jay
Do you pull names out of a hat?
He’s older than Watkins who left Exeter four years ago. His record at Exeter suggests he’s probably a half decent League Two player.

Fao ClaretTony no I dont and actually check out whose on the up
I get very annoyed at our pxxx poor scouting there a lot of decent teams in the West Country yet we seem incapable of finding players from teams on the up
Exeter are very good at developing talent and profiting from their finds.Brentford apply the same techniques on a grander scale
I thought you were above snide comments

It's not snide at all - I just think it is a bit of a nonsense to suggest a League Two player who has reached 25 and achieved very little. I accept Exeter are very good at developing talent but once they've reached that age it is unlikely they are going to be making money on them.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 10:47 amFao ClaretTony no I dont and actually check out whose on the up

I remember Graham Lancashire scoring loads, at that level.

If he’s a striker surely at 25 he’s a couple of years off his prime as a striker? After saying that I have no idea who he is, so very much just a general observation.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 10:53 amIt's not snide at all - I just think it is a bit of a nonsense to suggest a League Two player who has reached 25 and achieved very little. I still shake my head when I think of Graham Lancashire... that day at Wrexham he was dynamite, and for several games after it looked like we had a £1m+ striker.... then he lost all confidence and I don’t think many were surprised or overly upset when he left (to Wigan I seem to remember).

Re: Matt Jay
Didn't help him when he came in, scored six in four games, and was immediately dropped when players returned from injury. What was a surprise was that he stayed with us for another three and a half years before moving on. In seasons 1992/93, 93/94 & 94/95 he started just two league games (both in 92/93) and made a further three sub appearances. During that time he had loans at Halifax and Chester. It was Preston he moved on to. Wigan and Rochdale came later.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 12:09 pmI still shake my head when I think of Graham Lancashire... that day at Wrexham he was dynamite, and for several games after it looked like we had a £1m+ striker.... then he lost all confidence and I don’t think many were surprised or overly upset when he left (to Wigan I seem to remember).

Didn't Leicester City sign a 25 year old striker who hadn't played at a higher level than the National League?
What was his name?
Jamie Vardy

Who was the last striker to go from league 2 to the Prem aged 25 or over, I presume expected to play at that age having a season best of 17 goals in league 2. This comes hot on the heels of scoring 4 league goals in each of the previous 2 seasons. There may be a little jump from league 2 to the Prem.

I would think that is quite a jump. However I do think there is some young talent in the likes of league 1 worth looking at.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 8:28 amAfter scoring 31 in 36 games he went to Leicester in the championship correct

Jephcott looks a good prospect, he is 21 and has 16 goals in 38 games. Not a bad return for his first season of proffesional football.
Dembele at Peterborough. He is a bit older at 24, but he has 10 goals and 10 assists from the wing this season. Could be worth a punt. One of his strengths is dribbling, he has more successful dribbles this season than everyone in English football.
Brennan Johnson, 19 year old on loan to Lincoln from Forrest.
Looks like a really good prospect. 10 goals and 5 assists this term from left wing.
Wouldn’t be against signing some of these lads and giving them a pre season to see what standard they are. Could then potentially loan out to championship clubs if not deemed the right standard. I suspect all three will be plying there trade there next season regardless.

When you say looks a really good prospect, what do you base this on ? I saw you bigged up Johnson last week and thought to myself he must have scored at weekend or midweek then noticed he scored 3 the night before. There is a bit more involved in scouting the watching the round up of goals on soccer special.

Clearly that highlighted the player, I then went a looked at his stats and he is in the top 10 in league in a lot of different ranges. Plus there are scouting reports on him online.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 8:44 amWhen you say looks a really good prospect, what do you base this on ? Does it detract from the point that he is 19 and one of the top performers in the league?

And prior to this season he played 4 times for Forest, the club he trains at every day and has been at since 2009 (so aged 8 onwards) and they felt he wasn't ready for football at championship level. They may also have a bit more information that 30 second highlight clip when scoring

He’s 19, starting off his career. Do you not think it’s worth the punt on a player like this? Or any of the others I highlightedclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:14 amAnd prior to this season he played 4 times for Forest, the club he trains at every day and has been at since 2009 (so aged 8 onwards) and they felt he wasn't ready for football at championship level. To do what ? Sign him for the first team ? Considering your agenda with Brownhill why would you want the club to sign someone who may not be up to it ?
Sign him then loan him out for a season or 2 ? Not really something to get excited about.
If he is as exciting as you think what sort of fee would you think Forest would be interested in for a 19yr old prospect

Re: Matt Jay
Well given that we quite clearly can’t compete with any premier league teams for ready made players. We need to find young players that haven’t quite made the grade in the hope they come good a few years down the line.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:21 amTo do what ? Brownhill is the perfect example of how our current transfer strategy doesn’t work. He’s at the top end of our budget scale and is clearly not good enough.

Clearly not good enough for you, Dyche is happy with him again I would ask who is better to judge you or Dyche ?
Your player rating of him yesterday was plain stupid but not surprising, you actually had him as the worst performer. Pretty pointless discussing anything with someone so blinkered and bitter towards a player. I can only think he didn't give you his shirt one game or something, it is all a bit hibsclaret and Taylor.

Re: Matt Jay
I just don’t understand how anyone can rate him higher than a five. He completed 17 passes, no dribbles, no crosses, dispossessed once, no chance creation. What did Brownhill actually do yesterday to earn a higher rating? There first goal was because he gave the ball away.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:27 amClearly not good enough for you, Dyche is happy with him again I would ask who is better to judge you or Dyche ?

What quality did he offer yesterday apart from running around a lot?
I actually marked him on par with Taylor, who I also thought had a poor game.
