British Super League

Post by box_of_frogs » Thu Apr 22, 2021 9:15 am

Talk of this being formed with Rangers and Celtic. Potentially down to 18 teams which means 4 English clubs down to make room for the sectarianism.

Won't happen, there genuinely wouldn't be enough interest.

No teams big enough in Wales and certainly not in N.Ireland.

This was their attempt at exploiting the ESL debacle.

You are right but what a support there would be in Belfast if they could bring all the extremists together in peace.

Cardiff and Swansea are city clubs and would have the chance to get into the league, so could still be classed as a British league.

However I dont agree with the 18 team limit, it needs to be 22, so to not disadvantage the rest if our current system.
Itd just mean a couple more midweek games.

I'm sure they would also bring in more added finance to it TV audience wise, but would also bring a lot more bad press and trounle too with all the political garbage.
Police divisions up and down the country will be the ones who will suffer IMO

Imagine if Celtic or Rangers came to play a league game at the Turf.

How many of their supporters without tickets would just turn up in Burnley, like Celtic did in 1978?

Like Aberdeen did a few years ago?

And what a great day that was.

We can't exactly call anyone for trouble with their rivals, we still have to have bubble travel.

I can't see this happening but the process would be interesting.

Celtic and Rangers assumed to be included. Cardiff and Swansea could argue that using the same criteria (best two teams in the country) they should also be included even though there is clear evidence they are not good enough to be in it.

The Aberdeen fans were brilliant and from those games I keep an eye on how they are doing and wish them well.Would be nice for the club to invite them down for a pre-season friendly.

There'd be no NI teams needed to form a `British' league. If it was a UK league, yes.

As has been pointed out, there's no team big enough in NI and I doubt there'd be much enthusiasm for a newly-created club.

The Premier League is already the British Super League. Celtic and Rangers should give Real Madrid call, I believe they have a few spaces left.

I’d welcome Rangers and Celtic to the Premier League.

Cardiff and Swansea already have an opportunity to play in it (and have done recently) so if they want to join they’d have to earn promotion again.

There is no doubt there is calendar room for a cup competition between English and Scottish Premier League clubs that are not in European competition and were members of their respective leagues the previous season (see what I did there - qualification criteria)

However
- There would no doubt be concern from the EFL and FA about a further degradation of their own competitions
- Welsh and Norther Irish leagues would demand to be a part of the equation though they (and many would argue the Scottish as well) are clearly not up to the required standard - which kind of makes a Gaelic (Eire, Northern Ireland, Scottish and Welsh) version a much better idea (perhaps the best 10 from the previous season play the Premier League teams.
- Will such a competition derive enough commercial interest to make it worthwhile - doubtful, there is only so much TV money to go round and this would all but kill the Football League Trophy from a commercial perspective, and yes they have managed to almost do that themselves with the B- team fiasco
- Premier League teams do not have the depth of squads necessary for this extra competition, many need the free calendar time to prepare for their next premier League game mentally, physically and tactically.
- some people have short memories about clashes between the countries respective clubs (though we have fond memories of our last one) while the principal problems tend to emanate with the Glasgow giants (who you would think will be busying themselves in Europe), I suspect there would be problems with others not least the Edinburgh pair

I would reserve judgement on our own participation 'by right' until we see what investment into the playing squad takes place this summer.

River of p1ss is the first thought that comes to mind when you imagine these 2 joining the prem . The down to 18 clubs would be a shocking move though

The down to 18 is a big possibility to try and keep the quality high.

If the three that went down come straight back up it will ring alarm bells. It works better when different clubs come up each year.

Again works on paper... the whole problem is that football is not facts and figures...

All three clubs were able and willing to maintain their equilibrium, without huge contracts dragging them into meltdown. I think it demonstrates that there is jump... which we all know, but just imagine the rip tide following a garage sale if some of the other clubs in our league got relegated...

It would be easier to create an equivalent British Super League by sending Sunderland and Carlisle to play it the Scottish Premiership. That would probably make it more competitive.

What about Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee etc. Surely this is just as elitist as the ESL to only allow Glasgow teams in. BSL wouldn't stand for Brisitish Super League more like Bull **** Land.

If Celtic or Rangers want to reach the Premier League shouldn’t they have to start at the Northern Counties 2nd Division east or something and work their way up?

If I was Rangers I would have sent a team down 10 years ago to do do that while having their first team still play in Scotland. Until they got to the championship then swap teams over.

I like the idea of a cup competition. Maybe the FA cup could be expanded to include teams from Scotland and N.Ireland - multiple layers of teams in both England and Wales are already in it. So, not a new competition, just some more qualifying rounds and adjustment to when the "top teams" enter the competition. Maybe it's as simple as the top 6 of Scotland's top division entering at the 3rd round - and the last 6 current Championship entrants joining in round 2?

Just think of the interest that would be generated if the Scottish leagues had play a series of games to qualify into a combined Amalgamated British league. Playoffs each season could then dictate which part of the British pyramid the Scottish league winners etc. join the English league... THERE SHOULD BE NO ENTITLEMENT in football... they are only as big as their performances on the pitch warrant. When a Scottish team is relegated they return to the Scottish league in a similar fashion to the old division 3 North and South worked. Government policy to climate change is going to dictate less travelling until technology catches up with environmental concerns; so long journeys are the last thing clubs should be either wanting or expecting their fans to shell out for. Flights are set to quadruple in price once the world gets to grip with the new normal...

For Rangers and Celtic to be allowed to leave Scotland to play down south has no more merit than the SL as it would do the same to Scotland as those greedy bastards wanted to do to our league.

The problem with this sort of idea is that it becomes the thin end of the wedge in terms of a fully developed British or UK football league. This could have implications for our national teams, as FIFA has always been keen on us having a British national team, rather than the current three.

At some point soon the big clubs will demand that either the premier league goes down to 18 clubs or the league cup goes. The big teams already complain about having to play too many games now, and with the champions league having more games in a few years time it is only going to make their crys louder. Something has to give and it isn’t going to be the lucrative European games that give. In 10 years time I would be surprised if the league cup still exists and if the prem still has 20 teams. Wouldn’t surprise me to see the prem ho down to 16 teams like in Portugal. The FA will do all they can to keep the big sic in this country as they bring in the money. The ESL may be down for now but it isn’t dead and if the big six don’t get their ways they will no hesitate to bring it up again in the future.

So the response to devaluing the domestic league by forming a new multi nation league is to devalue the domestic league by forming a new multi nation league.

Makes sense.

Not.

Devaluing the Scottish FA Cup.

Only change id make, when it comes to the FA Cup would be to give the winners a place in the Champions League.

A non starter and whilst we are at it chuck Cardiff, Swansea and Newport out or stop calling it the ‘English Football League’.
