Fine lines.
Its about making money and servicing debt now, and it could be argued that the best way to maximise the profit is to invest just enough cash to finish 17th.
18th probably brings oblivion to a small debt-laden outfit like us.
16th and above may bring a few smiles but would be unlikely to repay the amount of investment required to achieve same.
So a bunch of grafters grinding out 17th probably suits all parties.

No mention of Cornet in the French press overnight. L'equipe saying that Shaqiri is due to arrive in Lyon for his medical today. They're saying that Lyon have agreed to pay 6m euros plus add ons which could take it up to the 11m reported by the Times. No mention of this or the loan signing of Emerson from Chelsea having any impact on Cornet's potential transfer BUT it's a clear sign that they're planning for a future without him.

Cunha deal has been on the cards all window. I cant see them matching 15 million when they only got 26 million upfront.
On a five year deal the Cornet will cost 28 million.
Cunha is also more of a striker.
I think their bid was made knowing Cunha was going.

So what would /10 be this window:
Cornet
Collins
Lennon
Hennessey
For me it’s an 8 - think as a fan base we under rate the success of keeping Pope, McNeil, Tarks and wood for another season, especially with talks of a new contract for Pope
Feel like bringing 2 wingers in, especially cornet who for me comes straight into the team means at every position, we have two first team players. Let’s hoping we can get it done

Even when we signed Michael Kightly it was a step up on the kind of player we were used to being linked with.

Getting rid of Hart and Rigg, targeting better players, keeping hold of our assets, and as interviews with the owner and Dyche are to be seen, confidence over a deal is high
Would agree that maybe we need a central midfielder. Such an odd one selling Benson imo - Barnsley’s fans raving about him - think he would have been a suitable backup

Maybe I am - stephens is a good experienced pro. But the level of performance he gives us now at his age is no better than what even bensons was.
I just think stephens never fit in our team here. He was a good player, so has some technical ability, but he’s not got the legs to press in our system. He looks like an old man. He is alright in a midfield 5 but in our 442 he looks lost.

Maybe he doesn't, but he wasn't exactly given enough minutes last season to reach that conclusion. Clearly Stephens isn't one for the future, and I don't think that he was signed with the intention of featuring much for us. But for a reported £1m we signed a player with a good amount of Premier League experience who Dyche has obviously rated for some time. The idea that we could have picked up a player from League 1 who was as 'oven ready' to step into a Premier League game immediately, for the same fee, is frankly the stuff of fantasies.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:33 pmMaybe I am - stephens is a good experienced pro. Do you really think stephens was that good on the pitch that we simply couldn’t. Benson for one cost Barnsley £1M and he was way better than stephens last season when they played. Yes stephens cost 1M because he offers experience and a good character, but you could well buy a young player just as good for the same price.

As I said, if you think we could have bought a young Premier League-ready player for £1m then you're living in cloud cuckoo land.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I thought Stephens was an awful buy, I know Dyche had tried to bring him in a season or two earlier but in between he got injured and couldn’t get in the Brighton team. I still believe it was a desperate buy having lost Hendrick. Too much reliance on how he used to play.

Fair enough if you thought stephens was good. Also - your in cloud cuckoo land if you think Dale stephens was a “Premier League ready player.” His legs have gone and he was terrible last season when he played.
You can’t bring in a premier league ready player for £1M full stop, so get that idea out of your head. I simply said we could have bought a midfielder at a decent age for the same price who would be better. Not saying they would be good, just better than stephens. That is due to the premium you pay for premier league experience.

We always talk up that the club do their homework on players before putting in offers
But let's face it, the players do the same thing about wanting to do their due diligence on any potential new club
We will always be one of the teams in the mix for relegation and for a player used to Champions League football this will be an important decision
Just because we have agreed a fee with his parent club does not mean we can offer what he wants - and that may not be just wages!
Shaqiri to Lyon is supposedly a done deal but is that to replace Cornet
