Sky Glass

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Oct 07, 2021 11:10 am

I see that Sky have announced their new 'Sky Glass' TVs this morning which will remove the need for a dish and set top box.

It’s not a bad idea, but will depend on who’s making them. They integrate tv, dish and soundbar.

Presumably it means if your broadband goes down you can’t watch tv at all.

Interesting idea, looks like the TV is payable monthly, but that's on top of the sky package.
Wouldn't be something I'd buy, but it's the next logical step for sky when you look at the availability of TVs branded with Amazon Prime, Roku, Chrome etc.

They'll just phase out the boxes in the next couple of years.

I'm no expert in these things; will going over internet mean they won't need to have physical satellites which are presumably very, very costly to produce and maintain?

Interesting idea integrating the satellite dish in the TV. People who live in flats often cannot access Sky directly (they can via cable from Virgin) because they are not allowed to have a separate dish. The only way is for some communal system which has certain requirements and still needs the permission of the freeholders/landlords.

I would say 'no', they will still need satellites and other broadcasting facilities. It says the system picks up its signal through Wi-Fi. I presume this means that a satellite signal is sent to some more local transmitter then converted to a suitable signal that can be picked up by your router. That router presumably comes installed in this new TV.

Isn’t this just a smart tv like many of us have that you can watch Netflix, iPlayer etc without a separate box? I was just watching sky news and can’t see what all the fuss is about apart from them streaming over the internet like all other providers do already.

There’s no integrated dish, it just streams Sky content over the internet rather than through a dish, so I imagine over time the satellites will become redundant for Sky.

My main worry would be that you need a reliable high speed internet connection to get the most out of it. Any connectivity problems will make your tv redundant, although I do note the tv has an input for a tv aerial, so maybe it has an integrated terrestrial digital tuner as well.

I am however very tempted!

It does integrate all Sky’s best features though, and has an inbuilt digital recorder as well as a decent integrated sound bar and is optimised to get the best from the services carried by Sky.

It's actually really odd that this news should be announced today.

Last night my wife was explaining to my son about Radio Rentals and how people used to rent TV's. He asked why people don't do it nowadays and I said, from memory it was a good idea but I though you ended up paying a lot more than the TV would be to buy. Next day, Sky crack it with a monthly payment option at 0% interest, no box, etc. I imagine this'll be very popular.

The monthly payment is an option if you don’t want to buy up front

We used to rent our tv when I was a kid. We got ours from Ardal in Burnley and a man used to come round every Thursday to collect the rental money.

I can’t see the Sky box dying out just yet, if ever. While it looks a decent tv at those prices it not very top of the range and people who like their tv’s to be the best money can buy will still need a Sky box. I can however see that the next generation Sky box will be internet only so that the need for a satellite dish eventually disappears and Sky stop satellite broadcasts altogether.

The company says that all of the Sky Glass models come with a full two-year warranty

Two-year? It's a big no from me because I like to own the stuff in my own home, and I'd be buying outright, but not when it's only guaranteed for two-years. Richersounds give you a six-year warranty on all their TVs.

"The new device from Sky is set to aggregate a range of electronic devices normally spread throughout a home into one single location"

Do people have many Sky electronic devices around their home? I have just the one box on the TV stand under the TV, not exactly cluttered with Sky devices.

It pulls together a tv, Sky box and sound bar. Significantly less wires and sockets needed and at least one less remote control.

Ahh I see, I misread thinking it was relating to Sky devices, but as you mention it just relates to various devices which as you say would help with less wires and sockets etc.

No, it’s yours. It’s a 48m month loan.

I think the advantage of the monthly payments is you likely get to swap it out every 3 years when they try to sell you the latest version, without having ever paid in full for the older one.

We used to rent our telly - Pye - when I was small. My dad went on forever about how small a screen it was and how he had paid for it three times over.

My mum told him to go and see about it and we had a new one for the same price. He said the chap had said he must be the last one with an old Pye!

SKY has been ‘near to’ rolling out satellite dish free television for bloody ages now.

As for this TV, I don’t get it.

It looks thicker than most modern televisions, the integrated sound bar presumably adds to the height (not good for those who have already in-built their televisions) and for those that do have multiple cables for surround sound, they’ll likely not want to drop back down to sound quality that may well be inferior.

The TV market is massively crowded and from what I’ve read in the past, there are quite small margins on the products, it’s why Apple has shied away from televisions.

If these hold their own at launch, it won’t be long until the big players blow their products out of the water.

I watched the launch of this earlier today, as a Sky employee I should be excited…but I’m not! I will be sticking with my Q box for a few years yet…it does seem an amazing product and I’m gonna have a play when I am back in the office on Thursday next week…but it’s a first evolution…you still need to pay for your Sky sub on top of the tv cost. The payment model for the tv will probably be similar to the mobile Swap 36…

This won’t be aimed at fans of high end tv and surround sound systems, it’ll be for the vast majority who have an average tv.

I imagine this is more a proof of concept and the real endgame will be getting the Sky system installed on TVs from existing manufacturers (like a lot of TV remotes have a Netflix button) and Sky boxes similar to Amazon fire sticks.

I can't imagine this will sell at all well on its own but will probably be on plenty of special offers from Sky.

Bit ugly innit, looks about 20 years old.

I don’t really see the appeal to be honest. There’s no reason why sky couldn’t be accessed through WiFi directly from an app on any smart tv without a satellite or Sky box. I can watch sky on my phone or computer without either.

Just seems like a way for Sky to make this technology exclusive to their TV’s, whilst increasing subscriptions, which isn’t a good idea and will be rolled out to all TV manufacturers before long.

That said, for people who aren’t particularly fussy about a good spec A/V set up I can see the interest free option being attractive.

Ah - thanks for explaining.

Wonder what the TV would do if you wanted to stop paying sky at a point in the future? Would it just block all but freesat/freeview channels?

I find it hard to believe they can suddenly produce a TV better than LG, the current market leader. I wouldn’t downgrade my TV just to get rid of some wires.

To me, it sounds like a no-badge telly running Sky software. You can buy Sony or LG for the same price and bag a six-year warranty to go with it.

Interesting point, am guessing that you would lose the Sky channels but have everything else…be interesting to see the new t’s and c’s…I’ve been off for a couple of weeks so will learn more next week!

Basically a Smart 4K QLED TV, with Sky like a built in app. OK for the average viewer who has reliable broadband.

Plus points:
No dish needed.
Only one wire (power cable)
Atmos built in soundbar.
Good price for what you get.

Negative points:
Good broadband connection needed
Can't watch Sky if you're internet goes down.
Picture quality not as good as OLED or Samsung top of the range QLED's.
Quite thick and ugly compared to ultra thin OLED TV's

I have Sky Q UHD and a mini box for a 2nd tv. I was quite tempted by sky glass as I have a perfect location for a TV in the kitchen but never wanted to put another mini box.

As they are 2 different things, you cant have them both in the same house from what I have read.

You need to send back all of your sky q equipment, get the sky glass, and then start buying additional sky glass tvs or pay £50 for a PUCK. You also need to buy a whole home subscription and you can only get UHD with a min of 25mb/s internet.

I can see myself staying with Sky Q for a while longer

£50 is a lot to pay for a puck

Being serious, I’m still on the old tv and have Sky Q. I suspect I’m much more likely just to buy a new tv rather than go for Sky Glass.

Never in a million years is the puck going to be 50 quid alone. With subscriptions perhaps but that's what you'll already be paying with sky in some form or other.

What Hi Fi have had a look at it.

Summary - lots of hidden costs and the TV is average.

That’s a strange summary! It doesn’t mention hidden costs and it actually calls the tv impressive for the price point.
