If I mention the Cotton industry, how many posts will it take to move this on to a completely different subject? Goodness there are some very strange creatures on this board

Went to Quarry Mill in Manchester, and we saw the mill we now live next to as one of the other mills the owners owned

I ued to deliver cotton to there when I was helping my uncle on his wagon during school holidays ---great education as a young teenager.

Coming up to the home games 1960s,always went to the Cotton Mills,on a Sunday morning,before we went back to the Midlands,with towels,tea towels,for all the family,Top Qaulity!

Talkingof cotton, me, Roy Thistlethwaite and Sam Pickles used to go to the Sefton WM Club on Cotton Tree Lane in Colne from Nelson every Friday night. The club was like something from "Phoenix Nights" with a couple of turns, "exotic dancers", cheap ale and an old bloke on the door who had no problems letting us in. We were sixteen.

I was surprised to learn, although I probably shouldn’t have been, that during the cotton famine which caused misery for Lancashire workers, it wasn’t just the short supply of cotton because of the American civil war that caused problems but the buying and hoarding of cotton by merchants here in Britain. Hoping to push the price up and profit from the crisis.

1989-2011 JH Birtwistle, Grande Rd Mill, Haslingden
All Cotton Weavers
Anybody else worked any of these?

My Mum spent most of her working life working at JH Birtwistle in Haslingden absolutely ruined her hearing,but she enjoyed being a weaver.She worked there with the Haslingden CC bowler Rupert Jackman

Birtwistle's was the best mill I ever worked at. In 1990 it became part of the John Lewis Partnership and all the workers enjoyed great benefits.

I did a four week stint at Ilex Mill in Rawtenstall..weft carrying I hated it went into the slipper trade better working conditions and superb wages.
