I see Blackburn have applied for City Status

Post by KateR » Thu Dec 23, 2021 2:04 pm

I've never fully understood how city status is applied, at one time I thought it was if you had a cathedral, but clearly not.

They can be granted on special occasions. Some were added at the Millennium. Preston got City status as part of the Queen's golden jubilee in 2002.

This can apply for nation status for all I care, but it will still be a shithole.

Warrington have also applied. If they get it I'd wonder if a few cities would ask to change back...

They can apply for whatever status they like but it won’t change the fact that we’re on the North West Tonight weather map and they’re not.

"applicants have been asked to showcase their cultural heritage, traditions and identity, along with their links to royalty and other famous residents"

I never knew Lee Mack and Ian McShane were born there...

Guaranteed to get it if the person filling in the application learns how to spell. I have never driven through somewhere as shi**y.

It's getting like it is here in the US, there's no such thing as a town or village. Its Township or City.
So, you get small towns labeled Cities, sometimes the places are so small they could be considered a Village, yet they are called a City.

So did I, but I was reading this morning that this convention was first broken by Birmingham in the late 1800's.

City status hasn’t helped Preston, it’s still the biggest dump in the North West (excluding Blackpool).

Lee Mack went to the same school as my older brother. Everton Comprehensive in Blackburn. It closed a long time ago and was a troubled school. My brother was a couple of years above Lee when he started there.
I can understand where Lee Mack got his humour from. It was one of those schools that either made you or broke you.

You say that and it is funny :D but it was a very troubled school. Violence was off the chart in the classroom and even more so out of it. Sports days were indeed postponed. My brother is the polar opposite of me personality wise and is a meek character. So as stated above it was one of those schools that either made you or broke you. I can't help but think it broke him.

Sorry to hear that fella.

I was a St Mary's College lad. The walk after school across town to the Boulevard wearing a claret and blue scarf and Burnley FC holdall regularly made things interesting with lads from Everton.! The QEGS lot were too posh to catch a bus/train! Happy, but sometimes painful , days !

You must have been there around the same time as me then. Clarets living in Blackburn. I can believe it was interesting. Never a dull moment back then growing up in that place when everyone knew we were Clarets

They surprisingly lost out to Preston last time they tried. I have to say Blackburn’s habit of tearing down any building built by previous generations (and with it large chunks of the towns character/social history, more than any anti- football resentment, makes me hope they fail; and by some distance.

If they were being scored out of 10 - they just might manage to scrape 2 points if their cathedral was Norman, but it isn't, so they get none. Mind you, a number 2 kind of sums the whole place up.

Compared to Blackburn? Yep, it is. There are some crappy areas, but there are also good ones too. We are surrounded by stunning countryside. Look up anywhere in the town and you'll see it, and it's all within short walking distance.

We also have well-kept parks and gardens. Blackburn is one mighty dump with hardly any redeeming features whatsoever.

I think you have your burnley blinkers on. The only difference between the two is that burnley is a smaller dump
Blackburn has countryside surrounding it as well, probably about 5 mins walk from many areas of the town, and two well kept large parks.
Through choice I wouldn't live in either, but needs must.

Alcester wants to be a city the high street is about the same size as Ramsbottom it's a great town with fantastic charity shops but can't see it as a city.

Quite a diverse selection in that list, I'll be surprised if Blackburn is one of the chosen entrants, but I guess you never know with things like this as there isn't any obvious criteria to base the final decisions on.

I assume there is some financial benefits of being granted city status as well as the evident bragging rights that would ensue for the winners.
