Weghorst
1 goal in 8 so far, 2 assists.
And our fans were slating Wood for not scoring goals.

Re: Weghorst
He assisted against Man Utd.
Re: Weghorst
Did he not get the assist for Rodriguez against Man United, and the assist for Brownhill at Brighton?

So 3 goal contributions in 8 games and one of our best players in every appearance.

Re: Weghorst
Apart from him making us much better as a whole, yeh you’re spot on .
Re: Weghorst
I think it's clear to see, he offers considerably more to the team than just goals. Work rate, creativity, link up. The assist stat doesn't show a true reflection, he's played a huge part in most of the goals scored since he's been here.
As for lack of goals, the team are still kicking the ball long, doesn't suit him or Cornet. How many good chances has he had? not many, was unlucky today with the clearance off the line.

Re: Weghorst
Aye, let's bring Wood back.
Re: Weghorst
Played a beauty of pass into McNeil on the break in the first half that McNeil then made a complete cock up of.
These balls into a channel for him to chase though are so painfully not working. Get it into his feet, get runners around him and he’ll find them.

Palace away, did very well with the header from the corner, and stuck it in the net when presented a chance, not his fault Rodriguez was offside in the build up.

Re: Weghorst
He's not an out and out number nine.
Although not a mobile front line, he may have preferred to have played alongside Wood than most of the other options we currently have.

Re: Weghorst
I actually think he’d enjoy playing alongside Vydra the most, just like Wood did. The only striker we have that runs the channels and stretches teams backline. But Vydra has probably played his last game in a Burnley shirt unfortunately.

The way passes the ball into space to claret shirts means he is our best midfielder to me. It’s a a shame that he, like Wood, Jayrod etc does not get the service he deserves.

Re: Weghorst
I can't remember him giving the ball away once, everytime he picks up the ball he makes a clever pass. You could see him getting more and more frustrated today when we were making the ridiculously silly mistakes. The long ball upto him isn't really working, we need him on the ball more, but into his feet.

I really hope we can keep hold of him if/when we drop, because he’d score 25+ goals in the Championship.

He’s miles clear of Chris Wood, who it’s worth mentioning has also yet to score since joining Newcastle. What a stupid thread.

we've played better football with Cork and Brownhill in the team, Westwood is obsessed with pinging it in the corners which is of no benefit to WWKRBFC wrote: ↑Sat Mar 05, 2022 6:29 pmI think it's clear to see, he offers considerably more to the team than just goals. Re: Weghorst
Another knee jerk thread, but 1 goal and 2 assists in 8 games. As opposed to Chris wood 0 goals 0 assists in 7 games! I think the difference between the 2 players is IMO WW links play far better than Wood

Re: Weghorst
I'm not going to compare him to Wood, totally different kind of player. He's had some very good games for us, none more so than at Brighton, but I thought he was very poor today.
Re: Weghorst
It’s quite obvious WW is levels above Chris Wood. It’s just a shame we decided to hoof it rather than play to his strengths.

Thais ain’t even close.
Goals for Chris Wood since joining Newcastle 0
Assists for Chris Wood since joining Newcastle. 0
Your point? Exactly. You don’t have one. ….
Re: Weghorst
It begs the question... why?
To me it often looks because our defenders can't handle being pressed. They lack composure and so have to let loose upfield.
Give us space and we pass it around well and get it to feet.

Re: Weghorst
Was feeding on scraps from an inept midfield. Played a wonderful sweeping ball to get an attack going. Need to play to feet not aimless launches.
And can we move on from Chris bloody Wood - he was a very good player for us. No goals or assists for NUFC but he's clearly doing something right as the team are picking up results while he's playing. Did very well for their first goals against Brighton. Just move on, he's gone.

Re: Weghorst
5 of those games against Man United, Spurs, Leicester, Liverpool and Chelsea too. Not easy games for a new striker with so little of the ball.
Re: Weghorst
Offers more in general play than Wood but I don’t think he will offer us as many goals as Wood did. He looks more use as a number 10 than a 9.

Re: Weghorst
He’s looked like he struggles a lot less than Wood did so far. I was a big believer in Wood but it’s clear to see that Weghorst is a far superior player IF we play to his strengths. He’ll struggle immensely if we keep pumping it into the channels. Even more so if he’s partnered with Jay who is equally slow.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 10:32 amDifferent kind of player but I do think he'll struggle in this league with his lack of pace.

Interesting, before you said Weghorst’s best performance came against Brighton (where he played with Cornet for the majority).ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 11:02 amWhy is it clear he's a better player. I think it’s clear WW’s a far more technical player than Wood, links play a lot better and can perhaps count himself unlucky not to score another one or two. Out of interest, which areas do you think Wood is better?

Re: Weghorst
Weghorst has been terrific so far and as well as scoring and assisting, he has been our best central midfielder in many of his games. He’s been offered zero protection by some half witted referees and has always given 100%
All this against a background of moving to a new country, playing 2 games a week and not having a whole team drilled for a few seasons around giving him the ball where he wants it - as was the case with Wood
If you’re expecting him to walk in with a couple of instant hat tricks and all for £12m then I’ll have what you’re drinking

Re: Weghorst
This is the key point. We have so few players with any form of composure on the ball that when they get pressed they hoof it forward and have Weghorst (and Cornet when he’s up front) feeding on scraps in the air. This is the tactic Leicester employed on Tuesday to great effect.
Get a central midfielder a la Defour who can actually play the ball to feet with some composure and Weghorst will prove he is tonnes better than Chris Wood. Some of the posters claiming Wood is better are laughable. I also really don’t see the huge difference in terms of pace between Wood and Weghorst, Wood was hardly Usain Bolt.
Re: Weghorst
For someone so tall he seems to be poor at winning the number of headers you would expect him to win.

Re: Weghorst
Being a few inches taller shouldn’t necessarily make someone better at heading. It gives them a height advantage but nothing else.
As for the comparison with Wood, which is a bit tedious but is obviously going to be discussed; Weghorst seems like a clear upgrade in almost every area. Crucially though it remains to be seen whether he will be an upgrade in the goalscoring department - but I think it’s likely his overall goal contribution will trump Wood’s.
