Maxwell Cornet

Post by dermotdermot » Sun Apr 24, 2022 4:44 pm

Was that him sitting next to Alan Pace? If it was, he looked different wearing sunglasses and so tall when they stood up at the end.

I think it was the retired American Footballer who was given a tour a few weeks ago and appeared on the official club page with a scarf on the pitch. If memory is correct he retired and invested his money in several different ventures and was looking at doing the same with Burnley.

I may be wrong but he looked huge, Cornets thighs were nowhere as big as his not his frame.

Interesting chat with RMC and Max Cornet. Apparently Cornet is disappointed to play on the wing as he thinks he's at his best playing as a "nine and a half or false 10". Emmanuel Petit clearly thinks he should be starting up front in a 442.

Hopefully he's back for Watford.

This is where he was playing alongside Wood prior to his African Nations sojourn, and was scoring and playing well so hard to argue. Reminded me very much of Vokes and Ings. Problem is Wood, and results in general, weren't doing so good, and we've not really got anyone else who can occupy the classic advanced centre forward/target man role alongside such a position. Jay was doing it for a bit with Weghorst but it's not his natural role, it's probably not Weghorst's either.

I think based on what we've seen it possibly is his most effective position in terms of end product, but right now we've probably not got the personnel to play him there without someone else having to play an unfamiliar role. Cornet is more familiar playing wide than our strikers are as target men so he makes the swap. Alternatively you go 4231 with him in the hole behind Weghorst and hope Weghorst can adapt, but he'd be a different sort of target man if so.

I think MC’s best position would be as an advanced winger/forward in a 4-3-3. He exploits and attacks space quite well. I think he’s doing just fine on the left for now and we missed him yesterday. Fingers crossed he’s back fit for Watford.

Maxwell was in the corporate section of the BL.

He took time out in the second half to come over have a chat and his photo taken with a young boy, in a Cornet shirt , and the young boys mum.

Very nice gesture well received in the BL.

I agree, for as much as I do think he sometimes goes missing positionally it also means defenders miss him. He's very good at finding space.

Although I'd probably put him on the right in such a setup, just because he's got a real eye for spectacular goals and isn't a terrific crosser from open play. If you can find space it's a simpler task to cut back a pass than whip in a cross and he finds space well enough, so you'd figure he can do that on the right. Weghorst could definitely play central in that system, not as a false 9 or as a full target man but his chest control, holdup and layoffs are excellent so he has the skillset to make something work.

But regarding putting Max out right, I didn't see the game yesterday but hear McNeil was terrific on the right again, which makes that a dilemma.

Jackson has said MC has had a scan on his knee, has his fingers crossed it’s all clear and he can return to training later in the week in prep for Watford.

I’d start the same team but Max provides a great option for changing things up.

Not for me. We missed him on the left and struggled to create anything down that side. Played well against Southampton which was our best performance of the season. Oh and he’s our top scorer. :)

May be wrong here but I rather suspect I saw young Maxwell driving a white Range Rover/ Discovery rather cautiously up Westgate this afternoon, the first letters of the plate were " MX58 " ... probably still getting used to driving on the " right " side of the road :D

I suppose the extra L on Maxwel makes a change from all the players who got the extra S - Wood, Hendrick, Hoskin et al.

Against Southampton both he and McNeil seemed to pop up inside quite a bit. I don't know exactly what the difference is between a "false 9" and a roving winger, but I suspect it's not enough to matter all that much.

If he is fit and available expect him to start

We got away with playing Jay/Vyds there on Sunday but it didn't really work

MJs game plan is based on getting ahead and protecting the lead. He's successfully changed both the wide players and/or the shape in all three games having taken the lead and it has been very effective so far
