Rileybobs, I note your use of the word 'generally' but I always thought Cork was a better player than Westwood and that we were much more of a threat with him in the side
I think a number of our fans would agree, but Westwood was our most productive midfielder in terms of goal contributions - so it may well be the case that we were more effective with Cork in the side, but there was clear logic behind Westwood being selected ahead of him. They are very different players.

The wide / inside 10 role in Kompany’s 4-2-2-2? Knight plays there for Ireland. Wiles, less sure on, but Rotherham fan reviews say he’s best when roaming in attacking spaces.
Knight is more defensive than offensive, his biggest attribute being his engine according to Derby fans. 1 goal and 1 assist in the last 7 months apparently. Never a 10 in a million years

I’m meaning the wide left / inside 10 role in Kompany’s system. Not a straight 10 like Twine. I would assume he would play there as he is very technical. When I saw him for Ireland on a few occasions recently he was quality on the left. He played left or right more than central for Derby last season.

They're not too bad in the stands, on match days compared to here.
I just hope none of them read this forum after a loss.

Despite being in the EU there is no requirement for Irish players to require a work permit to work in the UK. Under the Common Travel Agreement which has been in place for 100 years UK and Irish citizens can move to /work in each other's countries - Brexit has not changed this .

I’ve got an idea for those dishing out personal insults. Save them up in your head and unleash them on here in the final minutes of deadline day. It would make interesting reading and also slam shut this thread. Would be a shame to lose it before then.

Back to the subject of Cullen…. I think this could be the most important signing we make this summer. We are shaping up to have a very exciting team next season.

Let’s hope there’s no hitches with this one.

Cullen is someone who Kompany clearly rates, and he was a key member of his Anderlecht side.

Potential captain material as well I'll wager.

Cullen and Bastien has the making of a fantastic partnership

Both have real technical ability. Something we have lacked for a few seasons (credit Cork has the ability but it’s depreciating with age).

Any more expected next week you are aware of?

I’d imagine we will want as many in as possible before the Shrewsbury game and Portugal trip (for team bonding purposes).

According to Fabrizio Romano Roma are interested in Zaha

If there is anything in that and they need a replacement would expect Cornet and/or McNeil to be on their radar

Going to be interesting to see how we line up. I thought Cork was going to be captain but if we're signing Cullen I imagine he'll be coming with the intention of starting as a holding midfielder in the role Cork would have been expected to have.

The more players we sign and the players we're linked with are making me think Kompany won't be just copying across his Anderlecht setup.

5 central mids (not including youngsters like Phillips/Helm), 5 central defenders (excluding Thomas).

It's certainly going to be interesting seeing where VK plays all these midfielders and indeed who will eventually be his captain, although it seems Cullen is his leader on the pitch I wonder how that would go down should he make him his captain coming straight into the fold.........if in fact he did that 🤷.

46 game season compacted by the enforced Word Cup break

Squad depth and quality is going to be vital - especially across the midfield areas. Might also explain why VK is looking at players who are comfortable in more than one position and can adapt to different systems

5 central mids (not including youngsters like Phillips/Helm), 5 central defenders (excluding Thomas).
Yeah.

Cork and Cullen would be holding midfielders. Brownhill and Bastien more advanced/box to box. Westwood is somewhere between both, Helm too. Then Phillips is slightly more of a 10. But it's a lot of options and players to keep happy if we're only going to be using 2 a game, even if we're rotating. Same with all the CBs. Maybe we'll be switching game to game through 433, 343, 352, 442 but that seems a lot to get across to a new group in a short space of time.

Wonder if today will give us more insight.
