Interesting fact that 2022 was the first time since 1988 that more Vinyls were sold than CD’s

Fashions eh! They cost about 3 times as much. Warp, scratch and need perfect storage.
All the guff that is written about warmth and feel, ugh. You need perfect pitch to be able to tell the difference.
I buy CDs cos I prefer a hard copy and sleeve notes over downloads. Although I still have my vinyl stuff from the 60s onward I rarely play them and have even started buying my favourites on CD as they are so cheap.

So in short without her the post is irrelevant

Re: Vinyls
Vinyl is selling really well. It’s my preferred format.
I sell used records on eBay and since I started around 7 or 8 years ago I have sold 12000 items.
It’s the only format I can sell that I make a return on regularly (mainly thanks to Music Magpie who can sell CDs for around the price of a stamp and a Jiffy bag).

If anyone has any unwanted vinyl i'll be interested enough to take a look and offer a fair price for some or all of it.

When Mastering engineers master a song/album they will create different versions for streaming, CD’s and vinyl as the LUF’s standard varies per format.
Also 5.1 format is slowly spreading to the home too.
(Google LUF,s)
Also when mixing engineers mix songs they can add ‘analog tape features’ to a mix to emulate the ‘warmth’ of analog/vinyl on a CD.

Re: Vinyls
Largely the same for me. Still got the vinyl I bought early 60s to mid 70s but haven't played since my Dual deck failed about 25 years ago. Been buying cds since and quite happy with the quality. As per above, I like to have hard copy cds (with info re lyrics/players etc) rather than get downloads; downside is the required storage space as I have c. 3000 now, Unlike my (grown up) kids, I like to listen to a whole album in order multiple times then come back to the same later - rather than jumping around between artists/tracks on Spotify (or similar).Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 9:27 amFashions eh! It's amazing isn't it, I probably spend more time (and money) trying to make my digital DAW sound like analogue than anything else.jos wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 10:13 amHaving “perfect pitch” has nothing to do with it

Re: Vinyls
I’ve got a number of Bowie albums on vinyl from the first time round before CDs.
A few of them are on the original orange RCA Victor label so I’m guessing pretty valuable.
I don’t play them as got everything on Spotify now and don’t have a vinyl player or even a CD player anymore.
Still enjoy digging them out every few months and looking though the album covers and inside sleeves - brings back lots of memories and aesthetically they are great to look at the art work and thought Bowie put into them.
It’s great that a new generation of people are enjoying vinyl. You can’t beat the clarity and quality of digital music these days but vinyl gives you a different music experience and there’s also that physical touch and feel element which is a million times better than adding another track to your favourite playlist on Spotify !

Re: Vinyls
I won't buy nothing but vinyl and I try and look after my lips always being careful and cleaning them before playing them. But fell into the trap of buying CDs in the 90s when you couldn't get a lot of new releases on vinyl and even reissues on cd had loads of extras and bonus tracks. They certainly cost more money back then. And to say there's no issues with CDs is wrong I have loads that stick jump and simply won't play or read in my player

Your 78's are likely to be shellac. Do you have any cylinders?

Re: Vinyls
I think one needs a good variety of formats. I have; vinyl (incl styrene), the odd acetate, shellac, CD, Laserdisc/CDV plus tapes; reel to reel, casette, DAT
The perceived sound quality debate (unless you have the hearing of a dog from outer space) is mostly down to frequency ranges, signal to noise ratios and compression rates. They all have their pro's and cons. I like a nice LP cover but find the CD libretti supplied by companies like Ace/Kent Records is phenominal - like reading a finely-illustrated book.
Modern day-pressed vinyl is cheap, lower-standard stuff than the earlier ones and is a factor in it's disappointing performance

Re: Vinyls
If mastered properly vinyls can sound better. Quieter music with less extreme ranges sounds better on vinyl than loud, bass heavy stuff with lots of noise in the mix.
I’ve given up on physical formats and just stream now, the quality is good enough now for me not to really notice. Much cheaper too!

This is a 2020 report from the USA. It's about money sales not numbers from what this article says. In any case music media purchases seems to be dwarfed by streaming (vinyl: $232 million; CDs: $130 million; streaming: $4.8 billion).
Regarding sound quality, it mostly depends on the recording itself, not the media. All media has some compromise. I only use CDs these days and when I compared vinyl to CD for certain recordings, I usually had a small preference for CDs but some vinyl was quite superior to CD. The big plus for CDs and digital generally is that it shouldn't deteriorate with use. Unfortunately that cannot be said for vinyl. Vinyl also requires much care to get it to sound its best - turntable set up, tracking etc., cleaning (some spend as much on a record cleaning machine as they do on a turntable), static, dust, and just general wear and tear.
I couldn't wait to get rid of vinyl once CDs established themselves. I did like album covers but don't really miss them.

Pleased to see you had the good sense to avoid the disaster that was 8track. Sticking cardboard down the edge of the unit to get traction. Songs split over two tracks halfway through. Re: Vinyls
I'd just got my first old banger with no music. Got a nasty radio first, then surpressors, then later went for a 2nd hand cassette player, then later a home system with cassette player so never went near 8-Track. From memory gjough, when they ran, thry sounded well!

All my vinyls are 12 inch rave music from 1990-1993 about 200 of them. many white labels, looked on discogs and some are worth £££ proper old skool classics. Just need to get a record player to play them.

I do the odd trip to the states to dig for vynil, the old soul stuff, what a treasure trove that was for the lads in the 7tsand 8ts turning up raresoul records, I had some nice finds in Philly and around the Jersey shore, made for a great holiday and a chance to recoup your costs. Met some interesting people on the Door Wop scene and they took me around the street corner hang outs and diners of the late 5ts, tales of Sinatra and the mob who would come the short distance from New York, Some great labels and productions came out of Philly.

Referring to original vinyl records as an investment:
I bought this original US single (in excellent condition) by Ruby Andrews for £100 two years ago (directly from a small US dealer). It’s now selling for around £275 (in excellent condition) so it’s been a good investment (as well as a musical masterpiece imo).

A friend of mine is a purveyor of vinyl - huge collection - and a reader (but not poster) on here.
He’s always available for appraisal of records and would likely purchase some if people are interested in selling.
Just as an FYI.

Re: Vinyls
Playing out on a pa works much better for me on vynil and of course people love those little works of art that the labels can be, a rare record played out even with a bit of bacon sizzle is acceptable even appreciated on the soul scene.claret2018 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 1:18 pmIf mastered properly vinyls can sound better.
