Re: Speaking other languages
I can read and speak a little German and French, make myself understood, but struggle to understand the verbal language. One of life's biggest regrets, as I think it would be wonderful to converse with someone in their own language.
I read somewhere to speak another language, is to possess another soul. So true.

Re: Speaking other languages
I used to teach English to foreign adults in London, and a key thing to aim at in learning another language is to think in that language. People who have a large vocabulary in their native language find this difficult, as it means becoming childlike in the new language, however removing that "step" of thinking in English, translating, and speaking in the second language will take you much further in terms of becoming more fluent. Then, as Colburn says above, you have more than one way of seeing the world.
