Bayer or Collins?

Post by gandhisflipflop » Thu Jan 19, 2023 2:44 pm

I was quite relaxed about all of the outgoings in the summer but Collins was the one which I did feel gutted about. I needn’t have worried because in my opinion, Bayer is the better player. I’d even go as far to say that he is better than Keane was in our championship title season.

Question is though, knowing what you all know now, who would you have in your team between these two?

Still not convinced about the reason why Collins decided to handle the ball against the Geordies,

Collins was a top goalkeeper at schoolboy level football so I think it was just a case of old habits die hard.

In the current system Beyer...absolutely no question imo.

Collins has some attributes..namely strong in the air and decent going forward, but can seem gangly and ponderous while much of his passing can be slow and erratic.

Beyer wins his headers most of the time and he's a Rolls Royce of a player in the rest of his game. He'll settle into the Prem just like I settle into my favourite armchair.

Collins was excellent in a lot of games last season, but he did handball it against Newcastle and it was his error that gave Ings a free run in the Villa game

He's obviously not the reason we got relegated, but his inexperience and Mee's injury didn't help

Anyway, can't compare the two because the prem is such a tougher league (see how Tarks isn't making enough of a difference to Everton)

Collins is excellent, but at times he was a bit rash and I don't just refer to the handball with that. Beyer is only 22 himself but seems a lot more assured for his age in my opinion (albeit, a level lower obviously). I'd certainly rather have Beyer for £10m and £15m in our bank account than Collins though.

Collins was all about potential. Had some very good games but a few mistakes.

Beyer has done very well at this level so far, but was poor for the 2 goals at United. The team conceded 2 very poor goals at Bournemouth as well, which is the only football against higher opposition.

Both players will have decent careers if they reach their potential.

Collins generally did really well for us but he has his mistakes in him, cost us in each of the last two home games last season. He's still making mistakes like that at Wolves. But he'll overcome it and become a very good player I think.

Beyer is playing at a lower level so difficult to compare. Time will tell if he ever gets to play in the Premier League. He's doing so well for us so far.

They're as good as each other and both have plenty of scope for development. Beyer isn't without his daft moments, just as Collins isn't - last week is a good example.

I'd have loved to have seen Collins in this team, I think he'd have been superb. More than happy with Beyer though, been excellent so far.

Stoke fans were raving about Collins in this league in a similar way to we are with Beyer.

It's interesting that we are hoping/assuming to secure Beyer for under, lets say 10m, yet our fans were really upset we sold Collins for 'such a low fee' at 21m, with some saying it needed to be 30m.

As others have said, hard to compare in some ways but I see them as similarish type defenders, Collins would have been fine in VK's system, good ball carrier and composed enough to play out (showed this at Wolves this season).

Practically the same age but Beyer plays like he's 5 years older than he actually is imo. Hopefully we can keep him.

Agree with TC above. Collins was an excellent acquisition and we moved fast to get him. He slotted in perfectly with either Tarks or Mee and at times thought he was unlucky to lose his place to both when they returned. He made a few mistakes with us, noteably the handball v Newcastle and the pen he gave away I think at Brentford. He has also lost his head at Wolves a few times, which has included a red card. He has kept his place, largely at Wolves who are actually a very good defending PL side, and they were willing to let Coady go once Collins had joined. The question is can he now push on and further improve ??-I believe so if Wolves stay up

What's good about Beyer is that you can see he is improving. He's also showing more leadership qualities.

I like them both, Collins was the biggest disappointment in last summer's departures, I'm confident he will come good for Wolves.
Beyer isn't a like for like replacement, he carries the ball out from the back brilliantly. His passing can be hit and miss, but when it's good it's excellent. I think Collins shades it defensively, but Beyer probably suits ours,or VKs system better.

Collins vs Man U the other night: played OK but his passing on the night wasn't as good as Beyer's.
Collins has every attribute to be a top defender, or a stand=-in goalie :D

Think Collins is very similar in style to Beyer bit he's a more powerful, imposing unit and better in the air. Given the choice I'd have him.

Collins and it's not really close IMO.

I like Beyer, I'm not saying this because I don't rate him because I do but the only thing he does better than Collins is run with the ball, and that only just. Collins is a much better passer, especially his more incisive, progressive passing. He's also the better all round defender and stronger in the air.

Beyer everyday for me. Collins was very good. Beyer is absolute class. Really like him.

ps He needs his own song. Time for the Cricket Field Leader to get one sorted for him.

Collins as the BFC player he was over Beyer on loan, like many Collins going was the worst for me and I feel he would have slotted seamlessly into this team and under VK. Having said that I really like Beyer and hope he signs on with us and develops further here and in the EPL.

Of all the players we sold or let go in the summer window with the exception of Tarks, Collins was the one I was most disappointed to see go. A Rolls Royce of a defender who will undoubtably join a top four club within the next couple of years. In answer to the question Collins for me but I'm impressed with Beyer, he will only get better and I'm sure he can cut it should we reach the Promised Land.

I'd personally pick Beyer. Collins leaving in the summer was a sickener but it looks like it was a blessing in disguise. I feel like Beyer looks calm and composed with the ball at his feet and I feel like Collins might not have been able to handle the tight pressing from other teams. Collins is a very good player don't get me wrong but Beyer fits our system better now. Getting Beyer on a permanent is a must this summer. He still has so much potential as well being only 22!

And I agree, he needs his own song. :)
