I’m off to Anglesey next week for a family trip. Staying near Beaumaris.

Anyone got any recommendations for things to do? I’m going with the kids (4 and 6) so some family friendly suggestions would be much appreciated

Yep newborough Forest and beach is fantastic.
Rhosneigr is nice - couple of decent restaurants.

Also well worth sitting on the dunes with your binoculars near the RAF base watching the fighter jets set off for the training runs - it’s a sight and noise to behold.

There a few Stone Age historical sites on Anglesey , burial chambers mounds standing stones etc, may not be enthralling for the kids though. Some nice beaches and a couple of small animal kingdom places

I took my US family to Anglesey a few years ago as I spent my childhood summers there. Must not miss items
- the silliness and picture-taking fun that can be had at the station at Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll­gogery­chwyrn­drobwll­llan­tysilio­gogo­goch
- Beaumaris
- Red Wharf Bay - the tide goes out, leaving great rock pools. Back in the day we'd take a bucket to collect mussels to steam them for dinner
- Benllech - see above
- Moelfre - take the kids kayaking or SUP in a sheltered bay
- South Stack
- Trearddur Buy - nice little horseshoe-shaped beach
- Newborough Beach, or more accurately Traeth Llanddwyn. My personal favorite - a huge beach. Descend to it and then walk to the right (north west)...and keep walking. Eventually you'll get to a promontory that has ancient landmarks as well as fisherman antiquities, but also it has beaches on all three sides of it. You can make this place an entire day trip

Outside of Anglesey, Harlech is worth a day trip out

Church Bay is well worth a visit.
Lovely cafe there that does amazing scones! The beach is beautiful also.
As has been said Rhosneigr is lovely and kids will probs enjoy watching the jets.
If your are nearby then Anglesy Brewery is well worth a visit. Not much to see but the ale in the tap room is lovely

Bangor sounds lovely, it's the most boring place I've been to. The last one out turn the lights off.
Conway is great, Betws-y-Coed, in fact inland North Wales was really nice. I suppose it depends on whether you want to Stay on the island, or pop back onto the mainland.

Portmeirion is less than an hour down the road and it's well worth the trip.

A trip to Holyhead is always good with the kids. They would probably like the ferries arriving and departing for a while.

North West Wales isn't famous for it's things to do for kids though - even in mid summer!

The most memorable thing i did on Anglesey was to shave my head; I enjoyed the experience, but you'd perhaps best ask the Mrs before you shave the kids' heads.

Go for lunch or Dinner to "Dylan's in Menai. Great restaurant and ask for an upstairs table for a view over the straits.
Likewise go the "Ship Inn" on Red Dwarf Bay. Again good food. Lunch is probably the best as they do a tasty root vegetable stew perfect for cold days.
Trearddur Bay is my favourite for rock pooling.
If you fancy a day out off the island go to Nefyn. It's a lovely village with a picturesque walk out to the lifeboat station at the end of a peninsula. Just watch out for golfers.

Anglesey sea zoo is good for little ones. Good little aquarium and normally have some form of inflatables outside in school holiday times. Buy a ticket and it’s valid for a week so can come in handy to pass an hour here or there if you don’t have the weather!

‘The Dingle’ in Llangefni is also a nice bit of woodland. Nice and flat for little legs and plenty of red squirrels to spot!

Anglesey is generally great but , sorry bfcmik, Holyhead really is a dump.
Very sad depressed place.

We used to spend a week there every summer staying with some friends of my parents who had moved to live there (Amlwch) It was great, especially as they'd had to (forcibly) learn Welsh. We sometimes went to RAF Valley and you could watch the comings and goings at really close quarters from the viewing area, but I guess that's not an option any more. There's loads of great bays and coves and as mentioned, the iron age burial sites and other remains are brilliant. The Gazelle, close to the straits used to be a great pub/hotel right by the water, but haven't been in ages, so it might not even exist anymore!

Rhosneigr beaches and sand dunes, plus Oyster Caycher, Sandymount, Beebee's ice cream (now called Chaplins), or any of the other cafés and bars/restaurants

Walking miles and still not reaching the sea at Red Wharf Bay (got to pop into the Ship Inn)

Walking under Menai Bridge from Chruch Island, along the Belgian promenade, and into Menai Bridge village. Dylan's restaurant for seafood is amazing, and also kid friendly

Aberffraw sand dunes amd beach - park up just off the village road, and walk down to the beach through the river
Biwmares (Beaumaris) castle

Or head over the straits

Llanberis, and the mountain railway (although if the weather is fine, the Llanberis path is pretty gentle, and there's a lovely cafe/pub on the way back that sells bottled beer - pen Ceunant Isaf). Also try out Pete's eats for the best breakfast known to man

I'll definitely second this. Got family just outside of Caernarfon and about 5 years ago a group of them went up Snowden and I had to stay at the bottom with a broken foot. Think they nearly got up and down by time I'd managed to get through a full breaky and it was class.

Newborough Forest definitely. Park in moelfre, walk or cycle over the cob and through the forest to the amazing beach.

Anglesey is actually one of the most special places in the UK, there are a dozen little gems there some of which haven’t been mentioned on this thread.. I’m from north wales and here are my recommendations

Parys mountain (it’s not a mountain it’s a stunning quarry with some spectacular colours, No1 recommendation)

The brick works (an abandoned brick factory from the early 20th century, just awesome)

Church in the sea (a church that gets cut off by high tide, beautiful at sunset, check online for tide times)

Newborogh beach (the beach is beautiful, also the woods for red squirrels and then there’s llanddywn lighthouse, you can spend the day here in the summer easily)

South stack lighthouse (great views but it’s a long drive and you’re done in 20 mins)

Beaumaris castle (castle for the kids, ferry rides around puffin island and of course another lighthouse.. plenty of places for food too)

Dozens of little beaches and small villages to visit which are lovely too but the places I’ve mentioned will keep you more than entertained

Also, avoid Holyhead there is nothing there. Bangor at least has a pier and you can check out the bridges, the town of menai has some decent restaurants Dylan’s being the best, but it’s mostly seafood and a bit pricey.

Part of life's learning curve: we were on a very broad reach in a SSW F4 coming up from Bardsey on a cold, grey, drizzly day, eager to get around the corner and into Holyhead. That was the last time I ever had the hood up on a set of oilies without wearing a baseball cap inside it; i never even saw the squall that came barrelling in from SW/WSW until it hit us, 30+ knots and zero visibility, once I'd dumped the main sheet and got us back upright I steered due north until it blew through. Scared the crap out of us, but 3/4 hour later we were sailing into Holyhead in bright sunshine with dolphins playing around us; the vagaries of sailing
