A sports team can't (or at least ought not to) focus its branding around the initial of its name if that initial is the letter B, because B is close enough to A in the alphabet that both the alphabet, and the abstract ranking systems derived from the alphabet (A which is above B, which is above C, and so on) are implied, which makes the team look like runners-up and not an A team, and this, ideally, is not what you'd want your brand to be.

- Boston Celtics, Red Sox
- Barcelona
- Baltimore Ravens/Orioles
Etc etc are doing just fine

In Milwaukee last year my coat with a Burnley badge was recognised twice by random Americans. If we change it, the new badge won't be recognised. So why change.

Boston Celtics don't revolve their logo around the prominence of the letter B, nor do Barcelona or the Baltimore Orioles, which of those you mention leaves just the Red Sox and the Ravens to prominently feature and focus on the letterB on its own in their logos — the Ravens, whose value as of August 2022 ranks 19th out of the 32 teams in the NFL, and the Red Sox, whose title drought was genuinely legendary, which is to say, they were famously shite.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 12:10 amThink that the :

I think you’re mistaking the Red Sox for the Chicago CubsSpiral wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 12:24 amBoston Celtics don't revolve their logo around the prominence of the letter B, nor do Barcelona or the Baltimore Orioles, which of those you mention leaves just the Red Sox and the Ravens to prominently feature and focus on the letterB on its own in their logos — the Ravens, whose value as of August 2022 ranks 19th out of the 32 teams in the NFL, and the Red Sox, whose title drought was genuinely legendary, which is to say, they were famously shite.
There’s obviously some psychology etc with ‘branding’ (which I can’t effing stand btw) - I hate how boring most brands have become - all opting for the same fonts, same colors etc
That’s not to say though it’s always great, look at the crap Leeds came out with a few years back - I dread to think how much that cost.
Ranting now (non BFC related) but it would be nice if we put more stock into things that actually make a difference in the world, fair bored of mindless consumerism / ‘brand managers’ and all that rubbish
Re: Aston Villa rebrand their logo...
Red Sox is the Babe Ruth thing, right? Eighty odd years without a baseball title or something. It's that I'm referring to. Not to say that their big 'B' logo has anything to do with that, but that I know them only because they stopped being shite when the Liverpool people bought them or something. I dunno, it's a crap sport, I don't follow it!
Re: Aston Villa rebrand their logo...
BTW, the psychology of it can't be understated. Semioticians have developed theories of sign systems for over a century (like how, say, a picture of a field on a milk carton makes you associate the milk with concepts like 'freshness' and 'organic', and not 'factory' and 'miserable frightened cows', which is usually the reality, and it happens so quick in your mind you don't even notice it), and these systems were built on linguistic theories and influenced massively by Freud and other post-Freudian psychologists. The best and most expensive marketing and advertising consultancy firms employ some of the brightest minds in the field of semiotics to dissect the human subject's mind in an advertising marketplace and advise how to apply their research to the strategies of their clients. That kind of consultancy isn't cheap. Those people are highly specialised in their field.

Sorry to post three times in a row. Didn't think of posting this when I initially responded.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 12:32 amRanting now (non BFC related) but it would be nice if we put more stock into things that actually make a difference in the world, fair bored of mindless consumerism / ‘brand managers’ and all that rubbish
What you describe and have a (justifiable) grievance with is not strictly speaking a phenomenon that exists by itself in a vacuum, but is better viewed as a symptom of something, the cause of which is the logic of capitalism. And what's notable is how capitalism can assimilate that grievance you've expressed and morph it into a brand. Think of any time when a product or service is forcibly presented as being no-nonsense, austere, basic, no frills, that's a brand in itself. They're saying "I am not a brand", and that is the brand.
Re: Aston Villa rebrand their logo...
If we're going for an American-style re-branding we should take inspiration from the old New York Cosmos logo:

I think new rules say that supporters must be consulted on changes to club colours, crests and names etc

Change Oddie’s to Haffner’s and you’ve got a winner.

Leave Oddies in. According to my wife it is the best bakers in the country. We have a Gails where we live which all the yummy mummy types go to and it is thought of as the best. Not a patch on Oddies according to her.
