England Squad
Can anyone explain how 58 mins of first team football this season is justification for the call up of Kalvin Phillips?

Name the alternative CDM other than Philips?
Re: England Squad
We really need another controller in midfield to come through. Carrick style player. Not sure there’s anyone out there.

The only other CMS playing at a remotely decent standard are ward prowse, Loftus-Cheek, Dewsbury hall.
Not sure any of them are worth putting in ahead of Phillips

Picks Toney as he hasn't been found guilty, yet Toney has admitted most the charges... so he just left him out the World Cup squad
Doesn't pick Sterling as he hasn't played enough, previously hides behind players not letting him down
Picks Dier over Tomori
Welcome back Gareth, you squad picking has been missed

Harry Maguire is a strange choice……yet again! His game has nose dived for far too long, rarely plays for his club but gets picked for England!? I’m sorry Gareth, but you really need to grow a pair!

I didn’t see that. But can’t blame him tbh, he’s had an exceptional breakout season. At his age and in his form I was really surprised he wasn’t selected.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 4:41 pmYou seen his Instagram post after the squad was announced?

there was talk last year of Nigeria trying to call him up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up playing for them.

Re: England Squad
Maguire has always performed for England he’s not going to be dropped anytime soon.
The stand out strange choice at CB is Dier. He’s been poor for quite a while for both england and club. I am surprised neither tomori or Chalobah were called up in his place.
Re: England Squad
Chalobah has been poor this season and probably is Chelsea's 5th choice now. Tomori hasn't been great for Milan either, in the league at least.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:23 pmMaguire has always performed for England he’s not going to be dropped anytime soon.

I would have preferred to see Levi Colwill who's been outstanding for Brighton and fits the mould as a ball playing defender (left footed too).

Re: England Squad
I think its a case of first games back together as a squad after a major tournement, it unusually falling at the back end of a long season and also straight into a couple of tough qualifiers.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:29 pmGood shout. Basically pick the players you know and trust to hit the ground runing and then in summer when we have a couple of easier games we'll see Southgate start to phase in some new players

Re: England Squad
Italy and Ukraine first up in the Euro qualifiers, so I can why Gareth has opted for experience.
Toney is a strange one as he's almost certain to face a lengthy ban soon.
5 City players in that squad, so hopefully their minds aren't focused on Saturday, highly doubt it though.

It's called building a squad, you can't just keep 'trying' people who've recently had a good game.

Re: England Squad
There's one at Spurs - Oliver Skipp. But for injuries I suspect he'd be pushing for a call up by now. Very talented lad.
Harry Winks was another but he seems to have gone off the boil. Then there's the lad Garner who left united for Everton last summer and has unfortunately Bern injured ever since.
But it's certainly a position that tends to be under stocked in this country.
