Real Madrid at the Bernabeu

Post by JohnC » Wed Apr 05, 2023 8:16 pm

Fulfilled a long held dream of seeing Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu at the weekend. I was sat on the 4th tier but not too far from the pitch due to the steepness of the stand. There's a lot of construction work going on at the moment which will take the capacity up to 81,000. Anyone else got memories of seeing a game there?
Was fortunate that Atletico were playing at home on the same day, so had around two and a half hours to get across the city to see my second game of the day. It was a long day! Anyone else done two games in a day?
Here's my match day experience at Real.

How many euros was a Twix? Were the pies hot? Do they have Bene?

;)

I bet it was amazing. Jealous? Yes.

I saw England play Spain there. The England fans were up in the gods, top tier. It was a night match, winter time, they had heaters on the roof which were incredibly warm.

'Anyone else done two games in a day'

Yes. Not quite the dramatic setting you found yourself in however.
Mid 60's end of season and we lost 0-1 to Leeds through an og from Alex Elder. Back to Rossendale after the match, quick tea and then off to Ewood Park with a 'red' for Saturday night game( researched it but still don't know why) against Man Utd. Blackburn lost and were relegated that season. A.polio epidemic in the town early season disrupted their fixtures and they.never really recovered from it. Games were early May.

Went on a few years back, the day D4 scored against Hull in a 1-1, Got a cracking match.
5-2 against Osasuna. Pens scored and missed and a red card.
Very similar seating to yourself. Couple of rows from the top and looking down on the crossbar.
Got a lot of attention for wearing my Clarets shirt, most of the tourists had splashed out on the RM shirt. No wonder they are so rich.

I was at this I think- was it when Shaun wright Phillips got the monkey chants? Pretty shocking seeing hundreds of people joining in.

It was 10-9-16. Girls are taking Mrs T and mesen to Valencia in May for a birthday present. Got Tix to see RM there, could be vital as Valencia are in a relegation scrap. Hope they are not relegated prior or it'll ruin the game.
As posted above. In my Clarets shirt with that view.

I think it was 2004, Spain won 1-0.

If I remember correctly Wright-Phillips came on as sub and did get the monkey chants.

Amazing coincidence! I was in Madrid last week-end for a wedding of my nephew. On Sunday a group of 10 of us went to the game against Real Valladolid, who had two good chances in the first 10 minutes. They hit the post and screwed one chance wide of the post. Then Madrid took over after a breakaway goal and Benzema scored a hat-trick before half time. They won 6-0..
Didn’t see anyone in a Clarets shirt though!
What was the score in the other game you saw?

I was in Madrid all last week too. However we spent Sunday at El Rastro Market. I think there were more people there than at the game, they reckon around 1000,000.
I wouldn't have minded the Real match though, but Mrs Jel doesn't like football.

Atletico won the other game 1:0 with the winner coming in the 86th minute. Parts of the Bernabeu were closed due to construction work, but they still didn't sell out. Was amazed that Atletico got the bigger crowd on the day, 61k against 59k. Will hopefully have a video done of the Atletico game in the next few days.
