Your Burnley Championship team of the Century… (so far)

Post by CoolClaret » Sun Apr 30, 2023 3:24 pm

An extremely tough one to decide after four promotions to the big time - which is four more than I thought we’d ever have when I was watching a Burnley as a nipper, meaning that some absolute legends will have to miss out.

So, here is my attempt:

4-2-3-1

———————Muric
Trippier-Beyer-Mee-Maatsen
————-Barton-Cullen
Benson———Blake——Tella
———————-Ings

Subs:
Heaton
Roberts
Keane
Brownhill
Elliott
JayRod (could play on the wings remember)
Vokes

Unfortunate to miss out:
Ward
Zaroury
Barnes
Little
Marney

Over to you!

:D I would suggest Defour is extremely unlucky to miss out

Defour didn’t play in the Championship for us!

Team of the century he’d be the first on the team sheet!

My humble attempt and you are right that we have had so many good players and Defour at this level would have been the icing on the cake.

Pope
Trippier Tarkowski Beyer Ward
Barton Cullen
Blake
Benson Ings Tella

Subs
Heaton
Keane
Roberts
Cork
Maatsen
JBG
Gray

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Mr Nick Pope also didn’t feature for us in the Championship!

Apologies, it was the goal against Bristol City that threw me and remembered after it was in the Cup.

Chris Eagles, Vokes, Arfield, Jones and Beyer all honourable mentions but don’t quite make my team.

I’m assuming VK is the manager and therefore our style of play would be as it is today. For that reason I prefer Muric to Heaton or Pope, and I also think Roberts has been a revelation since the World Cup - he’s everywhere and I don’t think Trippier has that - he’s an up-and-down fullback. Tarkowski in just to be a defensive rock to counter-balance the otherwise progressive flow

I know this is against the spirit of the thread but I’d go
Muric
Roberts Beyer THB Maatsen
Cullen Cork
Brownhill
Benson Zaroury
Ings Tella

It would be an early version of Cork than at present but I reckon as they could play the current system so well.

Whilst individually better Im not sure
Heaton Pope Tripps Tarks Mee Blake et al would play the system as well

Ings Vokes

There's loads of players where it's very marginal though. As well as pretty much all of the current team, put in Little, Blake, Ellott, Marney, Gray, Austin and probably a few more and I'm not quibbling.

If you are looking at the best players to have played for Burnley in the Championship then Gazza would probably be first on the list. I doubt anyone thinks he produced that form for Burnley though....sadly

Just checked..the Championship wasn't called as such until 2004. It was the Football League First Division. Therefore Gazza wouldn't have been eligable

He wouldn't get into a reserve team based on his performances for us

---------------Muric------------
Trippier--Beyer--Mee--Maatsen
----------Barton---Cullen---------
Tella------------------------Blake
----------Ings-----Rodriguez------

Jay Rod is the pre-Southampton move version, I think under Howe? He was brilliant.

Zaroury has a higher ceiling than Blake but RB was one of my favourite ever players so can't leave him out.

Based on their ability at the time not past ability or future achievements, also not needing to be wedded to a particular managerial tactic.

———————-——-Muric——————————-
Trippier——-Cahill——-Beyer——Maatsen
————Barton—————Cullen————————
Benson————Brownhill—————-Tella
—————————-Ings———————————-

Subs: Heaton, Keane, THB, Andre Gray, Zaroury, Gudmundsson, Vokes

Logic says that players like Brownhill who is shortlisted for best player in the division has to be in it

Heaton
Trippier, Cahill, Beyer, Maatsen
Blake, Barton, Cullen, Little
Ings, Austin

No specific system, style etc just the best players to have played in each position. Blake on the left is a slight stretch but he did get pushed out there a bit.

A reminder for those who didn't pick Super Glen, including the "Benson" at Birmingham with his weak foot (admittedly not all were championship goals).

Nah that’s not the q - it’s who was our Champ team of the decade..

Otherwise we’d have Cahill, David May etc etc in our teams

Seems like the midfield two of Cullen and Barton is becoming a bit of a consensus and a lot of people also agreeing with a back four of Trippier-Beyer-Mee-Maatsen

As ClaretSpice said - we really have been blessed… some players
