He didn’t - he said that the thought Tella’s pace would be dangerous against Premier League defenders.
That seems a pretty reasonable thing to say.

You still haven’t said which games you have watched which suggest otherwise - you are now saying there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that’s rubbish.
What evidence ?
How many games did he even start for Southampton ? My guess is you never even saw him play before he came to Burnley.
In that season Tella, Armstrong, Che Adams and Walcott we are all ranked in the top ten players in the prem for speed.

None of them were effective, and the pace is negated by the fact that modern CBs at the elite level are absolutely rapid. If your praising tella and saying how you think he will be more effective now, focus on the talents that have actually developed - like his touch and finishing.

In reference to saying what games I can’t remember it was over a year ago. I believe he started in ten games that season and was a further sub in 5 games.

BURNLEY REACH AGREEMENT WITH BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO SIGN SOUMAÏLA COULIBALY
L’Équipe’s Loïc Tanzi reports this morning that newly-promoted Premier League side Burnley have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Soumaïla Coulibaly on loan with a purchase option of €15m.
Coulibaly joined Borussia Dortmund from PSG in 2021, signing his first professional contract but has played just 61 minutes across two games for Die Schwarzgelben, one in the Champions League and the other in the Bundesliga. A prominent figure in BVB’s second team, the Frenchman played 25 games, and also played four games in the UEFA Youth League.
Seems the fee was agreed in euros, at current rates that's near enough £13 million, every little helps.

He's actually decided it isn't any use for an attacker to be quick. Absolute peak.

I am really not sure what your point is, that’s he’s quicker now? Or for some reason his pace will now be better against premier league defenders?
My point is that professional footballers at 23 tend to be better than they are at 21. You seem to think that players don’t improve at that age.

Where have I said that?

If a player is quick and has technical ability it’s the best attribute to have (look at Mbappe the best player in the world).

In his two seasons in the PL with saints he played 741 mins and then 801 mins

Rarely did 90 mins, and also had a few injuries along with Covid

Saints have been disjointed for a while, some poor signings and managerial appointments

It would be hard to make a proper assessment of Tella to determine if he’s PL quality as a result

He’d probably do well here because both parties know each other and he looked quite settled, was first choice etc

I'm struggling to think of a forward player who has played for us that has pressed from the front better than Tella did for us last season, he can also finish and he's quick. I'd rather try and get him for 12 million than someone from abroad who might be slightly cheaper but may not be any of those things

Most normal people would just admit that they hadn’t seen Tella play much or at all for Southampton.
He came to Burnley and was brilliant.
His pace, energy, goals etc were all attributes that you hope would be useful for us in the PL….and nobody for a minute thinks it would be as easy as it was for him in Championship.
To say his speed would not potentially be one of his assets after what we saw last year is just stupid. To then try and back up your opinion by pointing to previous games you had not even watched at a club that hardly gave him a chance is even dafter.

Would £12 million be enough for Saints to agree to sell though? I suspect not.

Vinny I have seen him play on a few occasions as I have with Obafemi.

This is a pretty pointless argument as it’s more than likely tella wont even be playing premier league football next season regardless

Lad watches 500 games a week. PL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Cinch League 2, Erovnuli Liga, DPR Korea Premier, Samoan National League. You name it, he’s watching it.

In his down time he’s rooting out Alan Pace’s sports washing and building Andrew Tate’s defence with a crack team of Romanian Barristers.

Southampton themselves didn't want Tella back in January saying they already had Championship strikers not cutting it in the PL and didn't need another one, I think they are taking the **** now wanting 15-25 million for him

This thread is over a 100 pages with over 5,000 replies full of opinions as to who we should buy, sell, loan etc.
Been pretty pessimistic reading to be honest.
It is what it is and it will be what it will be come KO against City next month.
So stop fretting, be patient, it will all work out alright in the end with a few surprises.

Have you guys finishing arguing about the effectivness of Tella's pace now?

Can we instead start to get excited for potential confirmation of one or two incomings next week? :)

I’ve got a weird feeling that we will get at least 2 out of the 3 loanees from prem clubs last season back this season. One permanent and one loan again with a view to buy.

Maybe all 3. They all want to come back and I heard maatsen was sorted until Poch wanted to take a look at him.

Be more to come the next few weeks definitely on this

Sounds like a good step for Muric. He's too good to be on the bench.
I like Muric but he isn’t as good as Hart, Heaton or Pope and all spent significant time on the bench for us.

Muric is better than the version of Hart when he played for us. When Pope came to us I don't think we saw him in his first season with us, although I stand to be corrected on that point. As for Heaton we didn't see him at the age of Muric, so I would say an unfair comparison. We won't be able to compare them fairly until the end of next season and by then Muric will quite possibly not be our first choice keeper.

At present we may have the best bench keeper in the Premier League, whoever is second choice for the first game of the season. I certainly wouldn't want Muric to leave before January.

He will make a good backup to Muric and push him to improve. Take away the penalty, and let's be honest it wasn't a great shot, I didn't see anything to suggest he takes the number 1 spot off Muric, for now at least.

The main reason I think he is without a doubt going to be number 1 is the fee and the fact Trafford has already done an interview where he stated he’s not interested in being second choice. He wants to be first choice playing every game.

I doubt we have signed him on the pre tense Muric will still be number 1

This is what he said about this upcoming season.

“'The most important thing for goalies is to be playing and if you're not playing it is really tough,' Trafford added. 'Next season I'll play every week. I can't sit on the bench.”

Interesting Burnleys old Keeper Gilks was his coach the last two seasons.

We wouldn't pay £15m - £19m for a number two. It's been clear for a while now that VK wants a new number one.

He will make a good backup to Muric and push him to improve. Take away the penalty, and let's be honest it wasn't a great shot, I didn't see anything to suggest he takes the number 1 spot off Muric, for now at least.
He dived for and had every shot covered, even those that were going wide. Far too often Muric watched shots go past him. I’m not judging one above the other but I hated that.

How do you know? Something he said?
I say he seems... When asked about the upcoming season he replied with let's see if I start. He didn't really say it but I wouldn't be surprised either after a decent season winning the championship. If he would be OK with sitting on the bench, he'd be a great number 2 to have. Just don't see him taking that step in his career after what he showed last season.

If he can play for a decent team somewhere he can keep improving, his value won't go up sitting on the bench. Depends on how he sees himself developing and how he feels at Burnley.

We wouldn't pay £15m - £19m for a number two. It's been clear for a while now that VK wants a new number one.
You may well be correct, but I didn't see anything last night to suggest he is better than the Muric who ended last season. Of course Muric may leave and in that case everything changes.

That won't have any bearing on him being number one.

We all see things differently but I wasn't sure he did have those wide shots covered. Whoever starts, I think our goalkeeping depth is looking stronger than it did last season. All bodes well.

What would you have liked him to do?

A couple of tasty nutmegs to end the first half?

Slalom through their midfield then sit on the ball?

I agree that some of the hyperbolic stuff is a wee bit premature and the lad has a lot to prove mind. But he can only save what he faces.

Bobby Thomas linked with loan to QPR or Cardiff according to Nixon.
Glasgow Rangers also apparently interested

If our manager thinks he can do the job, that's good enough for me.

I think the thing that is confusing some of us is that Muric was a real success story last season. He was excellent towards the end of the season. So strange that we’ve been so actively trying to replace him. I feel it must be an off the field issue because on the field he looks like he is a great fit for Kompany’s style . I don’t think the huge party while the season was still on did him any favours.
