Even when an offer is accepted and medicals are about to or have taken place we have have pulled out on several occasions in the hope that some other player we prefer more might yet become available. I get the impression we mess around a lot of players with this approach.

I make a guess at what's going on.
City have just decided to cash in on THB.
We had the Trafford purchase and the young French cb loan to buy deals lined up.
Now we want to buy THB and loan to buy Trafford if we stay up.
Hope I am correct.

If we owned Beyer, Al-Dakhil and Harwood-Bellis you really could be looking at about £120m worth of talent in 18 months time in that one position.

Will Lancaster’s tweets seems to get taken as gospel on here. Who is he?
He likes to hedge his bets, that’s for sure. Wout focussed on playing at Burnley, but still might be sold. TBH back our “radar”. Basically, they might happen, they might not.

Besiktas were linked with him earlier this week. It has been odd this last few years how often both clubs are linked with the same players. More than a coincidence I think.brunlea99 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 13, 2023 10:15 pmOkereke - Cremonese:

Rough translation:
The newly promoted Burnley in the Premier League would be looking in Italy to reinforce its offensive department. According to what was collected by our editorial staff, the English club would have targeted David Okereke Cremonese.
The Nigerian striker born in '97 ended last season with nine goals in 38 games between Serie A and Coppa Italia. Difficult to hypothesize for the attacker a stay in Serie B .

If Harwood-Bellis does return, Beyer's taken his number five.

Maybe Coulibaly's middle name is Mambo and that is the real reason why the move fell through

He has already seen us sign one CB in O'Shea and attempt to sign another in Coulibaly
Maybe he won't be as keen if thought of as third choice
Would certainly prefer him to any of the above two

THB has a got more chance of regular PL football at Burnley than at virtually any other PL team and knows the club and manager.
Most of the established teams have already got quality European standard CBs, and he wouldn't suit the style at Sheff Utd or Luton (even if they could afford him).

Fully agree, and most clubs have really experienced back ups at CH-I think THB would find it exciting to be rejoining us. He will have the confidence he can start each game. The only other clubs he would start at are probably Bournemouth and possibly Evertonnil_desperandum wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 8:25 amTHB has a got more chance of regular PL football at Burnley than at virtually any other PL team and knows the club and manager.

The O’Shea signing looks more bizarre the more you look at it. Really struggling to see the logic in that one as we continue to look for more centre back options. It’s a sizeable fee that could have made a difference in attempts at to sign Tella, THB, Maatsen etc.
Happy to be proven wrong but seems a completely unnecessary spend in a limited budget.

My bet is on right back in some games in the role Roberts played earlier in the season forming the back 3 in possessionMattster wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 9:06 amThe O’Shea signing looks more bizarre the more you look at it. He's a good signing - another one that fits our profile of buying to sell later on for more money (of course it might not work out like that, but that is surely what we've got in mind)

I think it is fairly obvious that the signing of O'Shea won't mean we miss out on anyone who is realistic and we want because we can't afford it.
I know it goes against the grain but those involved will know the money we have available.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Still seems quite a big spend for a role that is likely quite limited in it’s use when there’s others already here that would be capable of it.
Just seems like a odd expenditure as we continue to look for more centre backs.

Don't forget when we signed Beyer he was described as a CH or RB. He certainly has the passing skills to play wide defender, and played RB in Germany . Having said that he is such a good CH I guess that's where he will always start. Personally I believe Beyer in time could make an outstanding defensive CM

I can see Beyer converting to CDM but I'm not sure if you'd even want to, he's got everything you could want in a ball playing centre back, genuinely Beckenbauer-esque.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 9:16 amDon't forget when we signed Beyer he was described as a CH or RB. THB.... I'm still not sure about this. If we hadn't signed O'Shea I'd see a point but now O'Shea is baffling.
And Ekdal looks like he's being frozen out or moved on already when for me, in his few games he was absolutely magnificent and the most underrated player in this squad. Him and Beyer are my favoured back 2, if it was a back 3 I'd understand wanting at least 2 covers but I can see him being relegated to the bench or sold when I genuinely think he's better than THB or Al Dakhil, currently. And at 24 he still has potential to improve as a centre back himself, they don't normally peak til 27-29.
Unless we're looking to loan Al Dakhil out, which I'd also be hesitant to do given his quality in his brief matchtime. It's a strange position to be in, not being sure about signing a good young player as it deprives other quality young players we already have of matchtime.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Ekdal appears to be the player a lot of posters on here seem to think is the weakest of the central defenders. Honestly don't understand how they come to that conclusion. On his arrival he slotted straight into the team and looked a classy defender. 24.years old, Swedish international. What do people want?
He got.outpaced by Pukki on one occasion and this appears to have made up a lot of minds on here that 'he's going to get found out'. Missed the last part of the season due to injury( brought about because he had played so many games before joining us) but if supporters begin to be dismissive of players like him then I think they need to open their eyes and realise what he has to offer our club.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Ekdal is a very intelligent defender which is why he hit the ground running. It was just not Pukki that exposed his pace though , but several other in the Championship and Beyer was able to cover. If he can develop Ben Mee's reading and positional play, he will somewhat mask his speed frailties. I thought Ben would get found out for pace at Brentford but mastered this successfully, and had a phenomenal season with them. Otherwise Ekdal will be cruelly exposed in the Prem. Genuinely think its that shortness of pace thats the only thing going against him

I was just going to post if any of our CBs was to play alongside Cullen then Beyer is the best suited. Al-Dakhil looks a possibility but neither of O’Shea or Ekdal seem suited.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
We've signed 2, now expecting a 3rd, player in his position for far greater fees, possibly higher wages. If we're paying those fees we want return on investment, we only get that by playing and developing them. We're not going to be playing 4 centre backs at once unless we're changing positions for players, so someone has to make way , looks to me like it's unfortunately going to be him unless we look to loan Al Dakhil and/or O'Shea out.
Its also a little bit of a comment on how he seems to be getting quickly forgotten by fans.

If there is one area we are strong it is CB. I would be much happier to see us looking for a quality striker or two. Currently we look a million miles away up front. Barnes was our best striker last season and has not been replaced. If WW is his replacement then we are in for a long season

Again for the Ekdal knockers about his pace, VK has pointed him out as we played him before he had a pre season & was not fully fit & that was why he was injured.

Now Millwall have a new chairman maybe now we can move on with signing Zian Flemming
Luke McNally is wanted by Millwall apparently, so we should be able to push on if we still see him as a target

Some posters on here have an amazing ability to know how our squad is going to look over the course of the season. Please share this info with VK.
Talk of players being at the bottom of the pecking order at this stage of the season (pre-season!) is ridiculous. Even VK won't know who will be in our starting 11 in 6 months. It's about creating healthy competition and it's up to each player to make that starting shirt their own.
For all we know Ekdal could be the first name on the team sheet in a few months.
